Thanks for the replies, busymom and billisonboard . Bil's link states Miracle Whip was first introduced in New England. So maybe it was dad's side of the family which intoduced MW to us. I now use mayo almost exclusively. The only time I use MW is when a hunger for a chunky peanut butter, bacon, and Miracle Whip sandwich kicks in. Sweet, salty,and savory all in one sandwich. Try it.

Miracle Whip is almost the most disgusting thing on the planet. It is but that is what I grew up eating. It's cheaper than mayo. Mom used to feed her grandson miracle whip and cheese on Wonder Bread at his request. I'm sure he ate those sandwiches at home. The sandwiches were in his eulogy at her funeral because they would have picnics on the kitchen floor, just grandma and grandson. He is a foodie now and wouldn't eat any of those ingredients as a sandwich. The cheese was American cheese slices. It was a sandwich staple at our house too. All three of my brothers love it with bologna. I just couldn’t stomach the Miracle Whip or the bologna either for that matter.

Maybe it was Miracle Whip and bologna. I lived far away and didn't participate in the sandwiches.
DN1 would not eat either Miracle Whip or bologna now.

Thanks for the replies, busymom and billisonboard . Bil's link states Miracle Whip was first introduced in New England. So maybe it was dad's side of the family which intoduced MW to us. I now use mayo almost exclusively. The only time I use MW is when a hunger for a chunky peanut butter, bacon, and Miracle Whip sandwich kicks in. Sweet, salty,and savory all in one sandwich. Maybe it was a regional favorite? I can remember there were certain foods you should & shouldn't take, for example, to a church potluck dinner.

Ah yes, Miracle Whip on a bologna sandwich. Add a bit of lettuce, too. That's probably the closest thing I had to a sub sandwich until places like Subway became popular.

One of my aunts used to make a side dish that was really good with cucumbers. They were sliced very thin, and mixed with maybe sour cream, and I'm not sure what else, but it was a tasty dish.

When I was a kid 60 years ago,for Thanksgiving. Christmas, etc. mom made some type of cucumber, lime jello mold thing (with Miracle Whip!) 'salad'. That had to be regional, no? Regional IN HELL MAYBE. Found it. Except mom wasn't that fancy. Put it in a 9"x13" glass dish or something similar. Should be on every holiday table. Cool Cucumber Salad Ingredients 1 medium cucumber 1 package (3 ounces) lime gelatin 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup boiling water 1 cup mayonnaise 1 cup 4% cottage cheese 1 small onion, grated Optional: Sliced cucumbers and fresh parsley Peel and halve cucumber; remove the seeds. Shred and pat dry; set aside. In a bowl, combine gelatin and salt with boiling water; stir until dissolved. Add mayonnaise and cottage cheese; mix well. Stir in the onion and shredded cucumber. Pour into an oiled 5-cup mold. Refrigerate until firm. Unmold onto a serving platter. Garnish with cucumbers and parsley if desired.

I'd try cucumbers & Jello. BUT, I threw out an old cookbook of my Mom's that had multiple recipes for combinations like Jello with pimentos, or Jello with green olives. YUK!

I'm the go to for potato salad with friends and family. I even have a designated "potato salad bowl" that is ONLY used for that.
1 potato per person + 1 for the pot (large russet potatoes), boil potatoes with skins on. when done, put into a bowl & sprinkle with either apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar. cover & refrigerate overnight. Want the potatoes to be very cold. I also boil a dozen eggs when I boil the potatoes & refrigerate them overnight.
Next day, peel the potatoes & roughly cut. I use a spoon to peel them & then use the same spoon to rough cut them in my hand. Add chopped boiled eggs, chopped yellow onion, rough chopped dill pickles & several heaping spoons of sweet pickle relish, crumbled cooked bacon, & a finely diced jalapeno (because we're from Texas, jalapeno is totally optional). Then I mix 1/2 mayo & 1/2 sour cream with a shit ton of yellow mustard. Mix together using my hands and give the mixture a couple of good squeezes (to create some "mashed" effect, yet still have large potato pieces). Salt & pepper and then taste. If it needs more "dressing" then I only add more sour cream (not a mayo fan). Then I chill it all again for at least 4-6 hours.
Now on day 1 when I'm boiling the potatoes, I take my "potato salad bowl" which is a large, ancient crockery style bowl & I put it in my deep freezer. It stays in the freezer until literally it's time to serve the potato salad. That bowl will keep the salad chilled for HOURS. I don't have to worry over it sitting out & going bad. Transfer salad to frozen bowl & top with paprika.
It's all eyeballing measurements other than the 1 potato per person + 1 for the pot.
All that work it must be delish...love the frozen crock pot...can't stand the store bought..Publix brand...

The following has nothing to do with potato salad but after reading some recipes posted...it got me thinking about a salad a friend taught me that became my specialty when needing to bring a dish some where or for my own table...it was unique yet never copied unless my friend too was invited...then I let him do the honors it was his originally...and it is a quick item...There was a name associated with it that escapes me so I did a quick google by listing ingredients and vela..lo and behold...they call it a Turkish salad , I thought it was a greek salad...but what ever ..great pictures. Slice the oranges..[no skin]...thin slice onion...drizzle good olive oil...tarragon vinegar...sprinkle tarragon on top...saran wrap..into the refrigerator...the onion picks up flavor of oranges...vinegar..tarragon...chilled...refreshing...guarantee it wll become one of your owns...noticed pictures had some greek olives on top..like that idea...would do that too... ------------------------------------------ ethnicspoon.com/turkish-orange-and-onion-salad/ Just sent the recipe to my daughter as a reminder...She remembers my making it and she too for a long time but not for past few years...everyone loved it and she will make it again this summer as she entertains friends at the summer place on the Island. I never got my own Mom's recipe. She didn't really follow a recipe. She was one of those gifted cooks who would add ingredients until there was "enough". Since DH won't eat anything with mayo, or Miracle Whip (I married a picky eater), I didn't learn to make Mom's recipe. But I DID like it better than any potato salad I've had at a family gathering, or in a restaurant. I do remember she'd cut up hard-boiled eggs to add to boiled potatoes, there was some white onion, and she'd cut up dill pickles into little pieces. She added just enough Miracle Whip, but no so much that it ever tasted soggy, nor was it ever drippy. Makes me hungry just thinking about it. Curious as your mom used Miracle Whip. Did your mom grow up in the mid-west? My mom grew up in North Dakota, met my father in Okinawa at the end of WWII, got married in North Dakota, and the two of them moved to Massachusetts, my father's home state. I grew up in Massachusetts. We had Miracle Whip and only Miracle Whip in our home. I never had mayonnaise until I was around 14 years old, on a sandwich a friend made for me. So I wonder if Miracle Whip was a mid-west condiment.We always had both in our refrigerator. Growing up, I ate both. Now, I only eat mayo. I LOVE a good potato salad. (nothing weird or "fancy" in it, please). I don't care for "gourmet" food. I like mustard, mayo, dill pickle, onions and eggs mixed in with my potatoes, and served cold. I find myself becoming more and more concerned about eating food prepared by others as I grow older though. I ALWAYS date everything these days. I want to know when things were opened, how old they are etc before I eat them, so I figure other people might want to know too. I live by the 3 day rule- on the 4th day I toss it. And I NEVER refreeze anything. Apparently others are not as concerned as I am. But I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to pass off old/spoiled food! -That crap came from someone else! - just sayin!

Boil russet potatoes with skins on til just not quite done...Cool. Peel & cut into small cubes into a big bowl. At the same time you are boiling the potatoes, hard boil some eggs...6-8 generally. Chop one good sized onion...add to potatoes. Chop up eggs into potatoes & onions. Put in enough swt. pickle relish until it is enough. Sprinkle generously with celery seeds...salt/pepper to taste. Mix a good batch of Miracle Whip with enough yellow mustard to color the dressing...add a good sprinkle of sugar, mix well then pour over everything in the big bowl & mix well. Refrigerate.
I don't care for German potato salad, at least not served hot...and I don't care for mashed potatoes in my tater salad either. Potato salad goes great with a summer cucumber/onion in equal parts vinegar/water salad...both sliced...and some fresh from the garden sliced maters.

I don't like mayo, it has a bitter taste to me. Miracle Whip works fine...and last time I checked the ingredients, MW was better than mayo. What is your definition of "better"? They are both oil and sugar. Maybe MW doesn't have eggs?
