This week, a new law went into effect in Mississippi. The state now bans plant-based meat providers from using labels like “veggie burger” or “vegan hot dog” on their products. Such labels are potentially punishable with jail time. Words like “burger” and “hot dog” would be permitted only for products from slaughtered livestock. Proponents claim the law is necessary to avoid confusing consumers — but given that the phrase “veggie burger” hasn’t been especially confusing for consumers this whole time, it certainly seems more like an effort to keep alternatives to meat away from shoppers. I can how that could confuse people....in Mississippi

It's just a good thing that the Republican state of Mississippi is tackling the BIG issues that are so pressing in today's society. I mean, this is top of the heap law making. Who cares about healthcare when veggie burgers are out there confusing people!

Next thing we know they will be banning 16oz drinks When I order a fast food combo meal I am always asked if I want to up-size my drink. I tell them no as it will require me to pee even more all day.

They are vegetarians. What in their thinking makes a veggie burger that tastes like meat a good idea?

They are vegetarians. What in their thinking makes a veggie burger that tastes like meat a good idea? Not everyone who eats a veggie burger is vegetarian. Someone who is eating it as a healthier option might still want it to taste like meat so they don't feel like they're sacrificing as much.

If they read the labels on some and yes I said SOME of these "healthy" veggie burgers/products they will see that the only thing missing on the label is "Made by Ciba Geigy, DuPont and maybe Monsanto. But that can be said of most processed foods.
And I'll admit that I have tried a few over the past 16 or so years but finally decided I didn't like the real stuff so the fake just didn't do anything for me. And I started to really read labels also.
But I have a friend who loves them and she said that as long as she puts mayo, mustard, tomato, pickles, onions, and lettuce on top they are pretty good.
Bottom line - to each his own. I eat sushi and it makes my friend turn green at the thought!!
That's why they make chocolate, vanilla and strawberry so to speak - sometimes they put it all in one container!

I tried the BK one in St Louis when I was there and it was good. If I have a choice I will choose the veggie burger option but if i am at an event where meat is the only thing that looks decent I’ll eat it.

Most are saying NO at this point & it certainly isn't any more environmentally friendly since they use all the chemicals on soy & soy is also GMO'd. I wouldn't touch one of these things...and I'm not a big meat eater any way. I like veggie protein tube! That works! I don't think it should be sold in the meat dept. either which is what one of these companies is demanding or they won't put it in the stores. But this too shall die a slow death like so many other 'fad' things.

But the question is, would you be CONFUSED to read "veggie burger"? As in, would you not know that it's not a meat burger?
That's what the law is based on. The beef lobby convinced the lawmakers that "veggie burger & vegan sausage" CONFUSES people.

That being said, I prefer to eat the veggie burgers/sausages. Why? It's certainly not for my health. I'm a smoker, so you can toss that reason out the window. I like them because I like the taste of meat, but don't like the thought of sentient beings slaughtered in horrendous conditions, in fear and pain. I had some "pulled pork" at a vegetarian restaurant the other day, and it was to die for! Made from jackfruit instead of meat. Delicious!

Fine, if you like eating all those chemicals...I don't! As I said before, I'm not a big meat eater anyway...but I'm not going to fill my body with glyphosate when I can avoid it.

Why not sold in the meat department? Mainly because it's NOT meat. Put it with the other veggies patties...in the freezer!...Morning Star! But these don't have to be frozen and are a far cry from Morning Star or boca burgers. Personally I loved picking up the beyond burger patties along with regular hamburgers all in the same section. Saved me searching for the wayward end cap, and ever moving vegan freezer section at the other end of the store. I don't really see the beyond burger as being marketed for people who already are vegetarian/vegan, or who are actively trying to get there. More for people who would like to cut back on meat for ethical reasons, but also really like the taste of meat and hate to give it up entirely. The store has oreos by the milk, and salsa in the chip aisle. Sure this can be in the other vegan sections, but it makes sense to have it with the packaged meat too.

I can how that could confuse people....in Mississippi
hamburger sandwich is a locality reference. it is understood to be ground meat, grilled or fried, on a bun. I am not sure how it is in any way confusing to say "veggie burger".
there is no trademark on that name, ttbomk. we should call it what is most indicative of what it is. I think that veggie burger is about as clear as it could be.

What would you call a regular meat burger with a lot of veggies on it ? Not trying to be smart ass, but a local family restaurant by me has a meat hamburger loaded with veggies, and they call it a veggie burger. That description would be the most indicative of what it is. Veggies + Burger ?

I would call that a burger with veggies, but I see where you are coming from, as a bacon burger is a burger with bacon, and a cheeseburger is a burger with cheese. But, the term veggie burger, meaning a vegetarian patty on a hamburger bun, has been around for a long, long time. More than 25 years ago, I would go to many different places that had it as an option, including some chain restaurants. I think the common usage will steamroll that one little mom and pop shop, unless the government puts a bunch of regulations on which phrases can be used and how. I thought we were doing away with regulations, but whatever.
