Has anyone done this? What did you think?

What is it? A laminate made of stone?

I don't think it's this exact thing, but maybe something similar. My parents "refinished" an old formica countertop by using a colored epoxy product on it at a rental house they had. It didn't look as fancy-ish as what I found online when I Google-searched it with these granite-like veins running thoughout. It looks nice though when they did it.

I did a concrete coat countertop for the condo I sold 4y back. I only had it for myself for the time it took to finally sell, but I would do it again in another renovation. I thought it looked nice, they were able to custom mix the colors used in the top layer to beautifully complement the other colors in the same visual spaces. when my phone charges some more, I will post a pic I need to grab from FB (that I can't log into while VPN'd in to work...) one of the benefits I was impressed with was that I no longer needed hot pads for hot pots on the counter. I forget what the temp rating was, but I just laid stuff right down on it with no problems. do you know how your contractor would be creating this? mine was a base of Azek on which the concrete solution was sprayed. on the rare chance that the concrete surface was breeched, the Azek would hopefully then repel more moisture than basic particle board and keep structurally sound.

sorry it isn't a good closeup, will have to dig on FB later when I'm not VPNd in. this is a listing pic, but I know I have one in the "mobile uploads" of a closeup of the sample the guys brought so I could okay the colors in the top layer. for some reason my phone doesn't go back far enough.

That looks like the stuff that they used to sell out of a kiosk at the mall.

I suppose, but when I did it, it was because that space would have cost me upwards of $3500 to outfit in granite (there's a small ledge counter to the left, just off screen, as well) and this concrete setup ran about $800. I got a break b/c the guy was trying to set up shop in MA, I blasted his name all over the place to people I knew that were renovating. the quality was there, for sure. he said he would probably charge $1100-1200 regularly for the same project. had I been able to list that first summer work was all done, I'd have been the first listing in MA with a concrete counter. a year later, who knows.
but the key - that price difference. it definitely makes you sit back and think about it a little longer than you might have .

chiver78 the price is why I'm looking at it. And a friend did it and it looks great. I would just be doing a basic white with maybe a bit of marbling. Yours does look good.

thanks. the way the project was explained to me when I got the bid, basically they sprayed 2 or 3 super thin layers of a concrete solution on top of the Azek. the paint colors were then airbrushed over the top of that, and then a heat-rated sealant layer went on top. like I said, I'd totally do it again if given the opportunity. the house I'm in now was a flip and came with granite, so I'm set for awhile.

I think they look nice, may have to keep them in mind if I ever re-do ours. The being able to put hot pans on them is great too.

okay, I grabbed a couple more closeups. one is of the sample section I had to yay/nay. I loved it, except the shiny sealant. the other shows the extra ledge, and that's the closer detail than the 1st pic I posted. hope this helps! Attachments:

I didn't notice any subpar wearing on the material, but I only had it for 2-3y before I finally sold the place. can't remember exactly when I had that installed, but I sold in Oct 2014.

Many artists use their epoxy resins with excellent results. I will be redoing both my kitchen and bathroom counters with it, because they make a product to cover laminate and mine are butt ugly.
