I'm going to engage a company to remove a very large tree on my front lawn and grind up some stumps. They want 50% down, 50% after it's done. I'm also applying for a HELOC set to close in 30 - 40 days.
If I use a credit card to pay the tree service, then pay the cc off that week, do I still get the protection from Visa or Mastercard that you get when you pay for anything on a cc? Even if they can't do a charge back because the balance is 0? I don't want the fee on the card when my credit gets pulled in a couple of weeks, but I'd like the cc protection that I don't get with a debit card.

Yes, you still get the protection and they can do a charge back. I had that happen to me several months ago due to the timing of paying off my card and not having any charges for the month yet. The charge back was quickly used up as it was only a few dollars. Do you use your credit card for daily/weekly/monthly items? That would use up a charge back.
