yeah, you are right. we should get rid of the Electoral College.
that would fix the problem.
either that, or we should recognize that our votes don't generally mean a damned thing in terms of national elections.
Yea, in some ways I "get" why there's an electoral college the more I think about it the more I think the biggest argument I hear for it (to prevent rule of majority ignoring the minority) could 1) be satisfied by the Senate and Congress and 2) like fuck most of those in office are listening to either unless you count lobbies as a minority. I think it made sense to use at the time being the country was small and the technology at the time - we have the ability to count every vote now and I don't think they ever foresaw the US becoming as big as it is. There really is no valid reason for the Electoral College now. In addition to ensuring that all votes are not equal, and tens of millions are effectively worth zero, the EC is why campaigning is focused on only a few states, while the rest are either a) used exclusively for fundraising, or b) ignored. If a state is safely in your party's hands, why bother spending time or money there? One of the reasons the EC was adopted was that it was felt the people could not be trusted with the direct election of the president. It was also a time when there were no political parties. It was assumed that there would be multiple candidates, none of whom would win a majority, so that the House of Representatives would actually choose the president in the end anyway. What we have now is a completely nonsensical system. It is an anachronism, a relic of a completely different time and what is in effect a completely different country.

DC is a state? Huh. Weird. you learn something new every day. That was the whole point Swamp...DC isn't a state & has no electoral votes but some dummy in DT's campaign blew $400,000 on ads there. I really doubt that anyone who works there & lives elsewhere is an undecided voter either. It was sarcasm.

They blew the cash to make trump feel better. He was seeing all kinds of bad news and ads for democrats, so they bought time so he could see something he liked instead. Must be tough to live with the need for constant adulation and positive attention. let them waste their money in places that are going to vote against him

Biden is now up by 14% according to one recent poll, and leading in 8 "battleground" states. Biden is contending in TX and AR. The election is a long way off, but these are really encouraging.

I won't believe it until I see it. More and more of my once-reasonable and educated peer group seems to be saying things that lead me to believe Trump has the votes.

it will bring you some comfort, I bet.

After 2016, I won't be believe anything until after the election. However, I do believe that Trump is in a much weaker position than he was in 2016. He's not the challenger, even though he's trying to run as one. He's running against someone who has net positive popularity ratings, versus his net negatives (and Hillary's net negatives). And the COVID-19, in particular, is a local story as much as a national one, and local tv news is generally more trusted by a wider variety of people on the political spectrum. Finally, the democrats strongest issue is healthcare, and what has the Trump administration just done? Filed a brief to the Supreme court to get the ACA struck down in total. During a pandemic the Trump administration thought it was a great idea to threaten people's healthcare and eliminate pre-existing conditions on healthcare.

You will have to remind me. Clinton and many of her voters were just as confident she would win. and in a sense, it was a "follow on" election.
confidence about your chances is not an asset in politics. it comes off as arrogance. voters don't like it.

However, I do believe that Trump is in a much weaker position than he was in 2016. he was in a weaker position one month after winning. his position has not changed that much. if you look at virtually every competitive race since then, the GOP has lost. I am not saying Democrats should be confident. I am saying that there is no evidence they should not be.

[br Let’s see if his racist/ Putin loving weekend can further nudge those disapproval numbers even higher. There is a rumor going around that Trump doesn’t really want to win. I’m beginning to think that might be right.

Trump Barbie doll Kayleigh McEnany said today that trump reposted the Florida white racist golf cart guy because trump wanted to show his support for demonized supporters.
Yes, the poor, poor white racists who can’t even yell white power in public anymore without have some snowflake take offense to that.
What next? No more cross burnings? Has the world gone mad?

He also posted a lovely white couple pointing weapons and screaming at protesters marching in St Louis the other day.
More of Trump s demonized flock, I guess.

So I guess trump is making this race all about race.
He claims the black lives matter sign that will be installed in his upscale NYC neighborhood is a ‘hate’ sign, and he’s refusing to sign the military appropriations bill if it includes changing the names of military bases to get rid of confederate hero names.
Plus he said he regretted signing the police reform bill that Jared said he should sign, because he is all about law and order.
Seems like someone is advising him to cater to the 30 percent of the voters who are white supremists. Doesn’t make a lot of political sense. I suspect that asshole Stephen Miller is the person pushing the bad advice.

He doesn't change people in the campaign thinking the general public will find out and change their minds about him. Politicians change the people around them, thinking they will get better advice or better ideas. That won't help Trump because he doesn't listen to anyone, so let him change all the people he wants. Until he becomes a better leader, there will be a lot of people who have a reason to vote against him.

Amazing that people will stoop to believing this lie (AGAIN) just because they are afraid they won't be successful if people with dark skin are recognized as smart.

Use Murphy’s law of time when trump says something. Double the estimate, then move to the next higher unit of measurement. So he really means 4 years. How anyone can believe anything he says at this point is beyond me
