I've never spent much time in or around hospitals, but I have a lot of difficulty believing any nurses anywhere are playing cards for much of their shift.

I've NEVER seen nurses play cards. Must be one of those "alternate facts" so embraced by the right.

I never get this supposedly logical argument:
They already get ______ so we don't need a law mandating _______ .
If they're truly already getting it then a law mandating it changes NOTHING except the company's ability to change their mind later on.

Donnadub just assured me that no nurse has ever played cards in the oncology outpatient clinic. She also believes the rider about OT is simply a ruse to kill the bill because the organizations don’t want nurses to actually have uninterrupted lunch breaks.

That's really stupid. The ER is ALWAYS staffed with nurses. They stagger the lunch breaks. The "massive heart attack" will be seen immediately. Have you ever heard of triage?

This country is getting itself into a dangerous position. Fuck the workers, protect the profit. Eventually the workers will rebel.

I'm going to have to tell my mom that she was doing it all wrong for 40 years. Silly mom taking care of patients all that time when she could have been playing cards instead.

Reading comprehension. Staggered lunches. One nurse takes a lunch at 11 - 11.30. One takes lunch at 11.30-12. One takes lunch at 12-12.30. One takes lunch at 12.30-1. There are always multiple nurses not on break to service all those heart attacks. Frankly, I dont want a nurse who isn't rested and hangry.

The new law requires employers to have enough staff to cover staggered lunches... so that they can't just make understaffed nurses work round the clock....

I've been in hospitals way to much, with hubs for months, with mom, DD, and myself. All I have ever seen is nurses just running themselves ragged trying to keep up. If they got a chance to sit down for anything I would be surprised, well other then catching charts up. When they even got to the restroom would have been about the only break they got. Now they work 12 hour shifts. Hubs and I were talking about that, we think that is to long. Those last 4 hours many are likely exhausted and can make mistakes.
Don't take away what they have, I never saw any playing anything.

I've taught when my 'federal mandated lunch' had kids in my room. Not everyone gets what they are supposed to... particularly in care type positions, ie. positions which would require a substitute to take time off. Thus why there is generally need for specific reinforcement laws in these cases. There are also issues here with hourly employees. And what is an UNINTERRUPTED break. Lots of states have varied laws on lunch and other breaks. www.bhfs.com/Templates/media/files/Compensability%20of%20Meal%20Breaks%20in%20Patient%20Care%20Environments_AHLA.pdfNurses are also a profession in which if the next shift doesn't show up... you don't get to go home, they can mandatory hold you there until replacement staff arrive. ETA there is a reason this is also being addressed in connection with overtime. Working through lunches if deemed time that must be compensated, is an issue for overtime.

AS, if not for unions you would have never had breaks and lunch time or anything else that is mandated. And the companies are chipping away at worker rights constantly. Everyother civilized country is trying to help people more. Here we have come under for and by the corporation only. Ridiculous

Both DH & I have several nurses in our extended family. They get run so ragged it's a miracle anyone would choose nursing nowadays as a career. They often have to "hold it" when they need the bathroom, because a patient needs help NOW. They don't even get proper breaks. And, don't get me started on how understaffed nursing homes are. Those nurses ought to get nominated for sainthood, with all of the running they do. They ought to make this Republican woman follow a nurse for a day for a complete shift. I'll bet she'd be exhausted just watching after a couple of hours.

There's a meme on Facebook about nurses and playing cards. It isn't very flattering to anyone who thinks nurses "play cards" while at work.
IDK know about you guys - but I would want a nurse who's had her lunch and hasn't worked 16 hours straigh, and isn't responsible for dozens of patients by themselves, tending to my needs (medicines, checks, procedures) during their 'shift' while I am in the hospital. I see exhausted (and sometimes hungry) people make all sorts of mistakes in everyday life. I think it's safe to assume that nurses do not possess some superpower that exempts them from this very human flaw. I don't want my nurse (or doctor) making a mistake due to exhaustion or hunger with my medicine, a treatment, or just having tired/hungry "tunnel vision".
Hmmm, maybe some people don't know what nurses are responsible for at work and how much knowledge and skills they have to have?

We don't hire anyone, if we did we would give them breaks for lunch and morning and afternoon whether required or not. It's just the right thing to do.

It's utterly pointless to respond to you and yet... Yes, it is required and yet they don't get to take one BECAUSE THERE AREN'T ENOUGH STAFF SCHEDULED for them to do so. Because hiring more staff would cut into profits. Instead of letting patients suffer, they skip breaks and lunch. Honestly, if it was already happening, or where it is already happening, the law shouldn't matter because it's required yo. And seriously you need a new hobby or some friends. Find something to look forward to each day more than the thrill of bad internet trolling.
