I just fell for a scam, the only good thing is I knew it was a scam the minute they hang up.
The call on my cell phone shows the call was coming from me, as if I was calling my cell phone.
That was odd so I answered, a recoding said this was AT&T and my account was suspending pending verification. If I wanted to re-activate it press 1, I did. Then it asked me for my passcode; I entered it. Then it said it was waiting on a customer Service represent the wait was long and they would call me back in 5 minutes ...
That is when the warning bell went off and I call AT&T ASAP and they confirmed I received a fraud call because they : A) did not contact me B) would not ask me for my passcode if they did, only ask for it when I call them as a method of verification for them.
So I quickly changed my passcode after o went through the verification process through her. She said they have gone dormant but recently customers have seen an uptick in those calls .

I got a call from "Medicare" the other day saying they were going to send out plastic ID cards and wanted to confirm my information. Ok... "What's your middle initial?" Uh... no. You know my middle initial. You're Medicare. Goodbye. Which is why I rarely answer phone numbers I don't know. I can see why folks get scammed though. It's especially disgusting how they can spoof the phone number they are calling from.

I am so overly sensitive that on Sunday I hung up on a delivery guy from Amazon. The call I received had a WA state prefix and the only people that I used to have a phone number for in that state moved to Germany ~ 2 years ago (DS2 and his family).
Got a call back within a minute and it turned out that Amazon gives private contractors some kind of app to contact cutomers → they don't get the phone number. So I let him read the full name/address/etc. to me before I decided he was probably legit and directed him to my building. Now I wonder how many legit calls I have not answered due to the never ending robo-calling and scams...

I have been getting this message left for me at least once a day for a week or so. I don't answer calls I don't recognize the number and I've heard of the scam where your own phone number calls you so I wouldn't answer that call.

I have a landline for outgoing calls only — especially for calls to 911 if one of the kids goes into anaphylaxis. A relative who I see very infrequently has been trying to call me. He finally reached me on my cell and asked why my home answering machine was full. Duh. Because anyone who truly knows me knows that phone is only for outgoing calls. I NEVER listen to those messages, never mind clear them out. I mustbe frustrating scammers on a daily basis. 😂

DH won't answer the phone unless he knows the number. I appreciate that, but he does miss stuff. The exterminator's cell read private caller.

Received this call yesterday. Caller ID stated it was 'Capital Bank'. As I have no financial connection with Capital Bank, I let the call go to voice mail. Signed in later to my phone service provider's web page to read the message left by Capital Bank. The message left said the following: "This is your final notice. If you do not act soon, Medicare will label you ineligible for coverage. Press one now to speak with me or another pain specialist or press nine to be put on the do not call list."How many banks have pain specialists on site?

I guard my phone number like my SSN. The only people who have it is immediate family and close friends. If a call comes in and it isn’t someone I know, it gets blocked.
Most online activity requires a phone contact, however in most cases they also require an email address. I have one email address just for internet stuff. If a phone number is required for internet business, I can usually use all 9s or all 0s. If a website rejects those and tells me to use a valid #, I simply don’t do business with that entity.

My personal favorite is if the phone rings and I pick up, someone says ‘who is this?’ Last time I said ‘you called me, who are you calling for?’. Click. Not sure what the scam is, but not willing to play your game.

I work on insurance and we've seen a huge increase in fraud lately. People trying to withdraw money from others life insurance policies and annuities.
One scammer was impersonating an employee in our building so we squashed that. We have one who we're stringing along right now who is impersonating one of our agents. He had his SSN and everything. The giveaway is that the scammer has a really thick Asian accent and he's impersonating a good ole boy from AR. As soon as he called we knew that was shady. Some of them are hard to tell though.
They all want the funds deposited into bank accounts electronically. So we started requiring that a form be signed and notarized and be accompanied by a voided check and a valid US ID. We're always trying to think of random questions to ask them that we're pulling out of their files (original writing agent, parents names, where they were born, etc). It's getting bad out there.

Scammers make it look like they are calling from another number hoping you'll answer it. I get them at least once or twice a week. The joke is on them though because I'm the only one in my circle with this prefix. This is also what makes it tough for the authorities to crack down on them.
The latest one was interesting. I ignored the call and they left a voicemail. I retrieved the voicemail and it said it was from John Doe ie the guy who actually owns the phone number they were pretending to call from and the message was typical scam bs.

I have Verizon, and I've gotten the suspended account phone call a couple times. I immediately go to my computer and log into the account to see if there is any indication that it is suspended, and of course there isn't.

DW and I get about 4-6 spoof calls a day. It is frustrating. To the point where I now answer my phone with "Spoof Call?" Works great until you get a real client on the line who says..."ummm...is this the law firm of..." Ooops. Time to get a dedicated Law Firm line.

Another point on blocking them, they aren't calling from their real number. I don't block them because I could end up blocking something I need. I keep trying to tell my husband this. The number that appears and that you block, is legitimate to someone else. It's not the scammers number, it just looks that way.

The person on the phone using the spoofed number is a scammer, but the NUMBER you'd be blocking isn't necessarily. The number (that you've now blocked) could belong to someone legitimate that you would want to be able to call you...like the police department, a hospital, etc. It's not an issue of "anyone who knows me", because if you knew them and they knew you, you'd recognize the number and it wouldn't be an issue to begin with. The issue is if the spoofed number belongs to someone who doesn't know you, but who you would legitimately want a phone call from like one of the people I mentioned above...it's also irrelevant to block the number to begin with since it's a spoofed number...blocking them offers you no benefit since the next time they call it will be a different number anyways. All you've accomplished is blocking either some random person who isn't likely to ever call you, or blocking someone important...there's really only downside since the block doesn't stop any calling in the future.

And hoops explained it better than me. But all of that is what I was trying to say.
I don't get texts either from blocked numbers.

I log on an Excel spreadsheet all the numbers I block. But before I block, I check the internet to see who the phone number belongs to. If the phone number and name during the internet check doesn't match the Caller ID on my phone, I block it. And if I don't recognize the real owner of the phone number which allegedly called me after looking it up, I have no problem blocking it as what business would 'Emily Smertz' of 'Beer Bottle Crossing, Idaho' have with me.

Spoofing is really easy, I don’t know if it still exists but 10 years ago if you jailbroke an iPhone you could get an app on Cydia that spoofed any number you wanted.

I got 2 calls this week from a Social Security scam. They spoofed the phone #800-269-0271. The last one even said "US Government" as the caller's name on my caller ID. They tell you something like this:
Hello this is (insert name here) from Social Security Administration the reason a for my called is to inform you that Social Security Administration has decided to suspend your social security number due to some illegal activities found on your social So before we take any legal actions call us at XXX-XXX-XXXX.
I'm on Social Security & just about everything they do is sent in the mail & e-mails.

At the moment, I am not within reach of my PC (on tablet now) where I have logged the phone number of 'Capital Bank' which really did not call me. I will update you in a bit and post the number. You post the number which showed up on your CID. They won't match. Phone number spoofing. Do you check the website 800NOTES to see if anyone else has received a call from the same number? I do. I also add received calls there sometimes. While the scam calls are a nuisance, nice to see one is not alone (on 800NOTES of those who have received the same calls from the same number).

TheOtherMe - Here is the phone number that showed up on my CID along with the caller name of 'Capital Bank': (423) 491-4383 . Is it the same number which called you? I had posted the call info on 800Notes on April 9th and then somebody else the next day, April 10th, received the same call from the same phone number and the CID also said 'Capital Bank'. 800Notes

I was getting messages about the justice department had a warrant for my arrest on my work phone. I work for a federal government agency. They quit calling though. It was always the same number and I was never at my desk when they called. I was sad about that.
You can get an app on your cellphone to spoof the number. Not sure it even has to be jail broke anymore. I know a girl who had a restraining order and the guy used the app to still harass her. She was able to get the texts from her cell provider and they threw his ass in jail.

Here for example are 22 of the 102 calls I have received since 4/18/17 from one caller. Always about reducing the interest on my credit cards. There were plenty of calls before 4/18/17 from this caller but I did not log as complete information as I do now on Excel. Fortunately, I have only received four calls from them since the first of the year. Not the case in 2017 and 2018. The name if the caller is always different and the area code and first three digits of the number is always different. But the last four digits are all the same of each of the 102 calls: 8992.
