Burger King’s new Whopper is 0% beef. That’s a big deal. (At first I thought 0% beef might mean pork) Plant-based meat just went mainstream. Starting April 1, Burger King is selling a new kind of Whopper that it claims is identical in taste to its traditional beef patty, with just one difference: It contains zero beef. This is a huge deal for those who want to see meat alternatives replace actual meat because of concerns over animal cruelty or climate change. If this scales up, it could help save hundreds of thousands of animals from suffering on factory farms, and it could fight global warming by reducing the number of methane-producing cattle. It could also combat other problems like antibiotic resistance. www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/4/1/18290762/burger-king-impossible-whopper-plant-based-meat

I wonder how many and what kinds of chemicals are in that in order to make it taste just like the meat counterpart?

I'll wait until after April 1 to check it out. From the link..... No, that’s not an April Fools’ joke (though some people, including in the Vox newsroom, wondered if it might be). The new beefless burger is a partnership with the startup company Impossible Foods, which will supply patties made with heme, a protein cultivated from soybean roots that mimics the texture of meat — convincingly, by the sounds of it.

Eh..... when I stopped drinking beer I did not switch to non-alcoholic beer. (yech) I stopped drinking beer. Not into non-beef hamburger either. BUT, I guess it is still a good thing though. I LIKE beef. However, I don't eat beef due to the atrocious conditions at factory farms and industrial feedlots. So, yeah...I'd eat that.

The beef we buy isn't raised in factory based farms so I'm convinced its got to be healthier and cleaner meat. At least I tell myself that.

Interesting. I will check it out, although I don't eat much fast food, so if it does taste just like a Whopper I may not like it.
I've considered doing 'day vegan' thing, which basically means breakfast and lunch is vegan, but you still eat meat for dinner. But I struggle with the difficulty of getting vegan food, and I'm slow to change, so I'm not very successful. I would love if they mainstream some vegan options just to make it easier to try some different stuff.

I like really good vegetarian burgers. Made with black beans, etc.
Weltz I was approached by a local meat factory for a high level job.
While I do eat meat, I would not even except their offer for an interview. They stated I would have to go on the factory floor and I almost threw up thinking about it.
I also eat way less meat now from when that was offered 7 yrs ago.

I love a good veg burger. Not to mention a few other vegan and vegetarian products; Gardein has a line of good products that I keep in my freezer. And while I am not a BK fan, I would give this a try.

I'd eat it. It could be a good substitute for the red meat I'm trying not to eat.

Has anyone tried this? Not sure if our local BK is selling it yet?

I wonder how many and what kinds of chemicals are in that in order to make it taste just like the meat counterpart? seriously. I've always shaken my head at the veggie burgers like Boca, that "TASTE LIKE MEAT!"..... I choose veggie burgers b/c I don't like the taste of beef. I actually enjoy the differences in some types of veggie burgers with the differing ingredients. like anything though, YMMV, and I'm sure there are vegetarians and vegans who made those choices for moral reasons, who do miss the taste......but damn. that's not an easy thing to recreate.

I interviewed for a co-op job in college that involved processing rooster combs in order to harvest the hyaluronic acid from them. at the time, I was barely eating chicken. totally can commiserate with you here.

Oh, I forgot to tell you.....a friend of mine went to BK and had one. Said it was really delicious, but expensive at $8.00. My friend is a carnivore, but loved it.

I read about the meatless meat product several weeks ago and it should prove to be interesting. Evidently they have nailed both the taste and the texture of beef. I'm in no great hurry to try them but probably will eventually. As a PP mentioned above, I too wonder about what they put into them to make them feel and taste like meat.

I don't really care what they put in them, as long as it isn't meat.

They think the first wave of customers will be the type that dont eat a lot of beef anyway. They also think people will view it as healthy, even though it probably isn't great nutrition, especially if you top it with lots of cheese and mayo and ketchup, etc. The hope is that they can bring the price down over time to be in line with the beef that fast food uses. If they convert all of the lower quality/cheaper markets, they could reduce beef consumption by up to 10%. That would be decades away, but it just gives you some scale.

A LOT of people I know, myself included, don't eat a lot of meat because of the horrific conditions at industrial feedlots and factory farms. It's not for health, so bring on the mayo and cheese!
