From your link. There is no suggestion that Malia, a sophomore at Harvard, was implicated in the scandal in any way. Any thing else you want to imply.

Many of the lyrics in Don't Feed The Trolls are from a schoolyard rhyme kids have sung for years. In the 1950s we sang the Georgia version up in Massachusetts except Miss Susie was known as Lulu. Haven't thought of that rhyme in years. Miss Susie Schoolyard Rhyme

This has been happening for wealthy kids since schools have been invented.
Trump got into Fordham because his older brother vouched for him. He got into the Wharton school of business after his daddy made a 15 million dollar donation. There's a reason Trump went to such pains to threaten the schools he attended NOT to release his transcripts.
Bush Jr got into his ivy league school because his dad was an alumni.
Clinton and Obama didn't have that kind of help only because they were solidly middle class - if they came from wealthy families, no doubt their parents would have greased the wheels for them, too.
I'm certain some parent slipped Plato a bushel of fish and a couple gallons of olive oil to get Jr admitted to his school, too. Parents are always going to do what they can for their kids, even if it gives them an unfair advantage over the rest of us.

Which makes me wonder why they did this investigation now. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see this stop. But what inspired them to do this?

While many of the uber wealthy donate money for buildings or large donations to building funds, children of alumni, scholarship funding etc... this at least seems legal, and many future students benefit from the generosity through donations. I see a big difference with the rich bribing coaches when the kid doesn't even have any athletic ability. Paying off someone to take your kids college entrance exams (SAT & ACT). Hiring a 'therapist' to label a child learning disabled to get 'extra' time for testing in order to have someone correct their answers for a better score. All the money went through a 'charity' to launder the money and disguise the fraud.
quote below from a different article I was reading sums it up well.

As far as Malia Obama having been coached by a tennis instructor that has been named in this scandal, more than likely a coincidence.
With Bush, Clinton and Obama its also possible name recognition played a part getting into an elite and prestigious university. What university wouldn't want to boast that a President's off-spring attended and graduated their university?

Or a conscious effort by the coach to connect with people who are able to pay for his "services". Coaching inner-city kids would be pointless for him. Him working to make that connection doesn't in any way show that the Obama's are involved in illegal activity.

All the money went through a 'charity' to launder the money and disguise the fraud. quote below from a different article I was reading sums it up well. Jared Kushner's parents didn't go to Harvard, but did give Harvard a 2.5 million donation, and not long after, Harvard accepted him. Kushner's fellow students in HS said he didn't have the grades or SAT test scores that one would normally need to get accepted at Harvard.
His parents claimed they give money away all the time, but usually Harvard makes a public press release when that happens. It didn't, when the Kushner's donated their money.
I know this happens all the time, but for every rich kid's son or daughter that gets that seat in that prestigious school, that means some kid whose parents can't cough up that kind of money gets bumped out. In a perfect world, only the best qualified students, the ones who would benefit the most, and eventually provide the biggest benefit to society, should win those seats. If wealthy people want to encourage our universities, they could fund scholarships, or make anonymous donations, or wait until after their kid graduates and then makes a donation.

I'm guessing someone alerted the prosecutor to Singer's scam, and they staked him out for a while, collecting evidence on his clients and the facilitators he bribed to help get these kids accepted.
No telling how many other Singers there are out there, or how many other clients he had in the past.

A LEGAL donation of $2.5M may or may not have influenced Jared Kushner's acceptance into Harvard, it didn't hurt his chances. I am sure the $2.5M benefited other students in some way, possibly financial aid fund, faculty support, academics, arts, athletic department, campus infrastructure etc. I'm reasonably sure Jared's parents in addition to the donation, paid the full tuition annually. lol I hardly call Jared's high school classmates reliable sources that knew his grades or entrance exam score results. As far as no press release for the donation, it may have been requested by the Kushner's. Again, making donations to a fake charity, fake therapists, money laundering, and pay to play- bribing your kids way into a university is a lot different and is illegal.

Actually the only practical difference I see is who is getting the money. It seems that if you give the money directly to the school it's okay. It is no more legitimate to buy your way into school than it is to cheat your way in. It really telling how valuable the relationships they develop at these schools will be to them in life when parents are paying millions for their kids to get them.

... Actually the only practical difference I see is who is getting the money. ... I see it as who ultimately benefits from the money. Money given to the school generally benefits the students. Money given to coaches benefit the coaches. One slot may be taken up by "Muffy" or "Bif" but that money can help "Maria" and "DeSanti" and "Abbas" attend as well.

Of course I would rather students earn their way into a school based on academic ability. As far as one 'buying in' being legitimate vs illegitimate. I understand what you are saying. A large influential donation of $2.5M from a family to help their one student get a foot in the door, in turn opens the door to several other students who are academically qualified, but not necessarily financially strong enough to access the same education. This at least is legal, and more legitimate (imo) than the group involved in this scandal paying coaches, therapists, test takers etc. Billisonboard explains it well in his post.

no, that was not the purpose of the investigation.
in fact, the purpose of ANY investigation is not to convict people.
and again: he has done a spectacular job of INVESTIGATING, imo. even if, as you like to say, Trump is never "convicted of collusion".
he is a unique and spectacular investigator, imo. never seen the likes of him.

Except most of these schools have billion dollar endowments. They don't need more money. Harvard's $37B endowment makes many multiples of the donation. I'm willing to bet that Harvard could give every student free tuition (and starting several years ago they do for any kid from a family making below 6 figures) from the endowment and still have money left over. Maybe a couple other schools on the list could seriously use the money, but the Ivy's don't. Donations to get your kid in are just a legalized bribe and don't help a kid that can't afford it. Afterall - that kid isn't at Harvard since all the rich kids bought their spot.
