I am 49 and my skin still looks pretty good, although part of that may just be my fat filling in my wrinkles.
For moisturizer I use oil of olay regenerist lotion with spf 15 or 30, for a cleanser I use Neutrogena acne wash cream cleanser, and I use the Neutrogena skin clearing foundation. I am not sure if it is the daily sun screen or all the salicylic acid in the skin clearing products that has helped the most. My skin runs to oily rather than dry though, which is why I have to use all the skin clearing stuff.

With the clot issue last month, I stopped taking oral contraceptives. I was taking them primarily for clearing up my skin. Less than three weeks out from stopping the pill, my face started breaking out again. Sigh. My doctor took me off of mine recently as well. I was expecting the worst with my skin, but all the neutrogena skin clearing stuff is still working, and instead I am having a bazillion hot flashes a day.

I'm 72 have pretty good skin. I use Dove or Caress soap only. Some nights I will use some night repair stuff from Estee Lauder or Merle Norman, most nights I use nothing. I also got a $1 jar of crème from our family owned pharmacy, its as good as the expensive stuff. Sometimes I use it. Also doubles as hand crème. For makeup, Merle Norman base. blush, MN powder, and Maybelline brow pencil. I have used Merle Norman products since I was 18. I would use their blush but went to powder, I like the crème better. And they had refillable brow pencils for years but they kept making them thinner and thinner to the point they would break while putting them in the holder, enough of that. Lipstick and that is it. I think you can use to much stuff. My DIL Is always cleansing and messing with her face, I think less would be better. If she just washed it and used a good quality base, her skin is fair and nice. I gave her a set of Merle Norman, it looked good and she liked it. But her friends in Korea made fun of her using old peoples stuff so she quit, her loss. When I was young I found to many products were worse for me. Probably what helps more then anything is continuing to take Premarin or hormones. You use soap on your face? And Pants is getting on me about Noxema! Right, but Pat says her skin is mostly good. If pat came up and was like "my skin is so dry, I just use soap, what should I do?" I would also jump up and down and yell at her about the soap!

Lol! I also use Ceruve for face wash. I bought my daughters Philosophy cleansers, and they do like those. I use the cleanser for dry skin vs. oily, but cerave is great!

Less than three weeks out from stopping the pill, my face started breaking out again. Sigh. I missed the clotting issue, but I hope you are recovering well, Chloe. I also have hormonal acne (and dry sensitive skin as well, aren't I lucky?) I swear it's just not fair to be needing anti-aging products and acne products at the same time. My acne issues are primarily on my chin because hormones, so I do a few things: 1) in the week leading up to my period, I exfoliate more than usual with Paula's choice BHA liquid. Keeps the top layer from blocking pores as much. I have noticed a difference in how many zits I get popping up. 2) I use the Ordinary nyacinimide solution+zinc to spot treat spots as they pop up. Gets rid of some before they get too terrible. Stings like a mofo, though. 3) highly highly recommend Cosrx hydro colloidal patches. You put them over a zit on clean dry skin and leave overnight. It helps. Sometimes it will completely kill even a monster zit, other times less effective, but if nothing else stops me fro. Picking at them. Hope some one of this is helpful. I'm sorry you're having a rough time.

Yes, but we have very soft water, we have a water softener so no scum. I can wash my face other places and my skin feels like its drawing, yuck.
I also have since last year a reverse osmosis drinking water system. It's just for cooking and drinking water and ice so I drink a LOT more water, it tastes so good, takes the chlorine out and all the yucky stuff. Just pure, clean water. Hubs said he can't tell the difference, I sure can.

I don't have any skin issues on my face, I did when I was young and still have some scars from that, but never had a problem since then. Merle Norman is a very good foundation, mom used it too and she had beautiful skin. I have the last few years when working outside put it on my face, I still wear a hat in summer working outside. I get my face tan but then wear one, fishing too. And years ago in Texas I started wearing a hat when outside as it was so hot it was ruining my hair so couldn't have been good for my face. We had soft water there too. Now the skin on my legs and feet feel dry so I use different cremes on them right now its Estee Lauder Luxe Body Crème, I also use hand crème, but the skin on my hands doesn't look so good. To much mopping and rough carpentry and thing I guess. Some years ago I started wearing gloves when working on projects and in the yard but to many years of not doing it. My hands are looking old. I noticed under my arms I'm starting to get crepy skin, the last 2 years old age is starting to catch up with me. When summer comes and I'm outside and get a tan, then the skin on my legs is better.
I give most of the credit to soft water. City water is very harsh on skin. If we didn't have a softener here they tell me this water is loaded with iron, I'm sure it would be a problem.

Correctly formulated soap is fine for your face Unfortunately Dove & Caress are "Beauty Bars", i.e. detergents and despite Dermatologist's recommending (especially Dove) detergents for your face...they're really not a good choice. I have no interest in slamming anything that anyone chooses for washing their face, especially when it works so I'm not picking on you countrygirl2. Or anyone else who has a great skin care routine; what works for you, works for you and it's all good. I've personally tried the really expensive skin care products - daughter is an Aesthetician who works for a Dermatologist so she has suggested products over the years....BUT I settled on this for me: I use an activated charcoal bar made with skin-loving oils and butters (super oily skin with super dry spots during the winter) and a face lotion crafted by a friend (she used to sell it on Amazon but couldn't keep up with the demand) that makes my 76yo mom look like she's in her 50's. It's all about what works for your skin type.

People think I am 10-15 years younger than my real age. I think a lot of things depend on genes but it probably doesn't hurt to have a good skin care routine. This is mine:
Nivea face wash - use morning and night St. Ives Apricot Scrub - 3 times per week
Olay Regenerist Face Cream - Nightly
Olay with 30 Sunscreen - Daily Olay Eye Cream (the one with retinol) - Morning and Night
La Therapie Eye Mask - 3 times per week Q10 Mask - 1 time per week
ETA: And I use Bio Oil on my neck and chest each night
Yes, I know...I do a lot of crap...it isn't very time consuming though and I have been doing it for years.

Wow. I need baby steps here, people.
So instead of washing with plain water, I buy Cerave. I continue with the retinol moisterizer every day but instead put it on at night? Use Ordinary during the day? Or a high SPF moisturizer with hyaleuric (sp) acid? Why exfoliate? Why mask? Why special eye treatment?
I don't wear face makeup, only mascara and sometimes lipstick. I'm not averse to doing so, just have never really learned how. I do have some acne scars on my upper lip but people tell me I'm the only one to see them. I don't believe that. As I said, I'm 59. I'd prefer to continue to look younger than my age, that'd be great. I think part of the reason my skin isn't in worse shape is that it was oily for so many years. It isn't any longer, though.

Good question. I'd like to slow down sun damage to my skin, have it look more polished without blocking up pores and retard to the extent possible deeper crows feet and the vertical lines between my brows. I have some freckles but no age spots.

I don't have crows feet or wrinkles around my eyes, or brows, or wrinkles period, my face is smooth. I have a somewhat of a line from the corners of my lips where my bite has changed. My neck is changing though and I do moisturize it. I know its coming, has changed in the last couple of years since I haven't felt as good, it was firm and tight before. But I have been fortunate, so not complaining I'm sure I would do more, if I were still working I would do anything and everything to keep from looking so old.

Exfoliation is very important because it gets off all the dead skin and helps generate new cell growth. I have had at least 3 estheticians tell me that exfoliating is the best thing you can do for your skin. I started doing it maybe 10 years ago.
I have used an SPF moisturizer for the last 20 years. I honestly wish I had started doing it earlier. I have sun damage from my teens and early 20's.
I assume the eye mask I use does something because I have so few wrinkles around the eyes but I can't know that for sure. I have been using it since 2006.

I have some freckles but no age spots. Then step one is for sure sunscreen! I don't have a good sheer sunscreen to recommend as I'm allergic to chemical sunscreens, but am sure others would jump in. Look at The Ordinary's anti-aging stuff, I bet they have something that would work for you. And like I said, cheap, so the risk is low.

I'm 37, will be 38 in September. Here is my skincare routine.
Morning: -Wash with Mario Badescu glycolic acid wash or this Elizabeth Arden cream cleanser my aunt gave me. I will need to buy something else when that runs out, but I always have the MB wash! I will on occasion use the No.7 total renewal microdermabrasion exfoliator when I'm feeling a little extra exfoliation is needed. -Belif Bergamot herbal extract toner. I apply this when I get out of the shower. It helps skin retain moisture. -Olay Regenerist microscukpting serum -Belif Aqua Bomb moisturizer. I am obsessed. Garnier Moisture Bomb and Neutrogena Hydroboost are also good gel moisturizers. -Belif eye cream. I almost don't want to list it because I am the worst at actually remembering to use eye cream. -Sephora Bright Future Skin Tint (spf 25)
Night: -Garnier micellar water to cleanse and remove my makeup -good ol' pink Olay night cream.

I'm definitely not the expert here because I'm not sure of the purpose of masks myself lol. But the special eye treatment, it's my understanding that the skin around our eyes is thinner than in the rest of our face (and needs to be handled delicately when cleaning and whatnot, to help avoid wrinkles), so most products are "too much" for that area. Most eye creams claim to help with fine lines, crow's feet, puffiness, and/or dark circles underneath the eyes. I've never tried one, but I'm guessing eye creams aren't very thick, to avoid tugging on the area when you apply it, tugging is suppose to cause wrinkles. That, and exfoliating are the only 2 of your questions I could even begin to try to answer , and someone else already explained exfoliating, I think. ETA: from the reading I've done, 2 of the most important keys to avoiding signs of aging are protection from the sun and making sure your skin is not dry. Well hydrated skin supposedly looks plumper and youthful looking skin has a glow (not oily). The glow tends to dull as we age, and women like me search for products to help bring it back. Some dry skin is dehydrated, lacking water, which skin cannot produce on its own. Some people's skin is dry because it's not making enough oil, which I believe can be corrected. Dryness can be caused by damage/a breakdown of some barrier our skin naturally has, that helps to retain moisture. Apparently this barrier can be repaired. Or dry skin can be lacking both water and oil. I don't know how to tell one from the other though, so this part maybe wasn't very helpful?

finnime Paula's Choice is a skincare and cosmetics company, they also have a blog on their website that has useful information about skin care and ingredients in products. They use to also rate (or review?) products from other companies, and it didn't seem suspect, like all the products were trash compared to theirs. I'm not sure if that feature is still on the site, since I haven't read on there in a while. But I did see a few days ago that you can still search for info on there.

movingforward, Pants and @pinkcshmere, what you've said makes sense to me, thank you. It's all kind of overwhelming to me. I do need sunscreen definitely. And a good cleanser, and I see an exfoliater and now moisturizing too. I spent so much of my life fighting oiliness and related clogged pores that I'm late to the train of adding products. Now my face is (finally!) not too oily and I need to avoid dryness from winter winds. I'd bought the Retinol moisturizer on Amazon Prime day and been reasonably happy, but unsure about anything more. And I've never been sure about day vs. night products except that an SPF above 30 seems useful for daytime. I am fair skinned. I like the idea of a tinted daytime skin protector with a decent SPF.

SPF foundation question that has always confused me... If you're supposed to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, how does an SPF foundation that I theoretically apply at 6am help me sitting outside for lunch?

Probably doesn't help much unless you reapply.

SPF foundation question that has always confused me... If you're supposed to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, how does an SPF foundation that I theoretically apply at 6am help me sitting outside for lunch? I don’t have sunscreen in my foundation, but I do in my moisturizer. What I have found is that it is pretty effective all day long, as long as I am not in the water or sweating profusely. So if I was working, and decided to sit outside at lunch on a sunny day, I was pretty good (even when I lived in San Antonio). If I didn’t use sunscreen on my arms that day, I was out there long though that they’d turn rosy though but my face never did.

Pants I have a temporary replacement for my Noxema. It's a foaming cleanser by OleHenriksen that's supposedly gentle and not suppose to dry your skin out. I got the small size ($10), didn't want to commit to the big bottle, since I'm still looking. On my next day off work, I will comb through this thread and make sure I didn't miss anything, then look into the products you all suggested to see what might be suitable for me to try. I really looked at my skin tonight when I washed my face, I'm happy to say my skin doesn't look bad at all. No bumps, and the 11's in my forehead are my only wrinkles. My under eye bags aren't as bad today as they have been before sometimes. My routine (minus the Noxema I guess ) has really been doing ok. If not for this tight feeling on my cheeks, I probably would've been content a while longer. I did order a moisturizer, (that none of you mentioned, but I'd already been eyeing lol). I'm sitting here right now with my face feeling nice and silky. I still put my avocado oil over it, I believe that oil has been very good for my skin. I think this moisturizer will be a good one for daytime use. I think I'm going to have my heavy hitters for my nighttime routine, hoping they'll work their magic while I sleep lol. Anyway, just wanted to share that the Death in a Jar is out of the rotation. A permanent replacement is still TBD. Oh, and I ordered from Sephora and was able to choose a free trial of a Fenty foundation. I'm a bit concerned that it's a matte (dry skin), but ooooh wee! I rubbed a small bit into my skin and it literally disappeared. It seems like the color was perfect! I may have to investigate this product line further, I REALLY want to step up my makeup game but I've ALWAYS had issues with foundation colors, even if someone was helping me choose.

Love anything by Ole Henriksen. Face the Truth gel cleanser and Pore-Balance Facial Sauna Scrub are two of my favorites.

I may have to investigate this product line further, I REALLY want to step up my makeup game but I've ALWAYS had issues with foundation colors, even if someone was helping me choose. Blessed be, sister. Now we have rid you of the pall of Noxema (a plague on all its houses), you can begin to enjoy life again. Also, sort of related, remember how I had to go searching for the lipsticks that were nude for WOC from the style thread maybe? In my Facebook the other day, I noticed my ad tag is "African American female" lol. The limits of AI.

Lol! Thank you my wise sister for insisting that I rid my vanity of the menace known as Noxema. I shall go forth and explore the wonders of the world, free of the horrid Death in a Jar. Yes, I remember you saying you started getting ads geared toward women of color after that. That's hilarious that AI has decided you are an African American female. Welcome to the dark side!

SPF foundation question that has always confused me... If you're supposed to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, how does an SPF foundation that I theoretically apply at 6am help me sitting outside for lunch? I HAVE WONDERED THIS MY ENTIRE ADULT LIFE!!!
