Good thing it isn't Walmart, then this would really be bad news... finance.yahoo.com/news/McDonalds-wants-to-fill-50K-apf-1401285143.html?x=0McDonald's Corp. will hold its first national hiring day April 19 to fill 50,000 openings at its restaurants nationwide. The company, based in Oak Brook, Ill., says it is making a concerted effort to add staff as its business improves and as more of its restaurants stay open 24 hours a day. McDonald's is hiring restaurant crew and management for full-time and part-time positions. The company's hiring goal translates to between three and four new hires per restaurant. Turnover slowed in the past few years because of the weak economy, the company says. McDonald's sees this event an opportunity to attract employees in a tough job market. It is also trying to shed the negative connotation of employment at the fast-food chain, once dubbed "McJobs." About half of its franchisees and more than 75 percent of its managers started as store workers. "A McJob is one with career growth and endless possibilities," the company said in a statement. McDonald's held a similar event in its Western region last year. More than 60,000 people applied for the 13,000 positions. Those who are interested can apply in stores or online. Some restaurants will hold events and interviews that day.

These are great jobs for high school and college kids.... Exactly, it's a great starting point for a kid. They also promote extensively from within...

I am mid-50s and cannot recall in my life time when 12, 13 and 14 year olds were allowed to work.

My younger brother went to work in the Nathan's Hot Dog chain and was with them from about age 15(?) right through the end of college. Received a few promotions, and when he graduated with his BA degree, they wanted to bring him on board as a regional manager.

They wouldn't have so many openings if they paid better. So what if a Big Mac costs $10.79?

The article said that business is improving and they are having more of their locations open 24 hours. Also the weak economy played a factor in the last couple of years.

It would be interesting to compare how there restaurants are doing compared to more upscale restaurants in the same area, maybe people are deciding to only go out to eat where it is cheap and the kids like. But adding 50k entry level jobs is still good.

Nope, I am already gainfully employed. 10s of millions of our teenagers and college kids, are being presented with opportunities to earn some money, and possibly seek a career with a top flight global company. There are dozens and dozens of jobs other than being a store worker.
I never said it was a great job when one starts out. It could be a career as the company promotes from within.

Remember during the Bush boom when we were adding 450,000 jobs a month and the state controlled media slaves were running stories about how that wasn't enough jobs, and that hamburger flipper jobs don't count anyway, and all the jobs added under Bush were service sector jobs and the service sector doesn't count? Because I do.

I don't remember that. I remember unemplyment was running at 4%. The market was going up like crazy. The housing market was going up like crazy. everyone was partying like it was 1865 and then the economy got hit by a friggen train.

PBP, Bush tried to count the hamburger jobs as assembly, since they put the burgers together!

So what if a Big Mac costs $10.79? I'll tell you so what: A 6oz. sirloin at Outback that includes 2 side which can be selected from mixed vegetables, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, loaded baked potato, fries, sweet potato, blue cheese wedge salad, garden salad, soup-- all fresh as can be for $9.99 That already makes a Big Mac a tough sell at $5 bucks. Two people can get a couple of Big Macs for $10, or a couple of steaks for $20.

PBP, Bush tried to count the hamburger jobs as assembly, since they put the burgers together! I don't understand why we need these jobs at all. McDonald's should be an automated, oversized vending machine managed by a single, skilled technician with some minimal people skills in case s/he has to deal with an issue that effects a customer directly. Unskilled people should starve and die. We can't have all these people using up the oxygen and exhaling dangerous CO2, warming the earth, and threatening the whole human race.

PBP who eats sirloin? That is as bad as NY Strip steaks. Yep, most of those jobs could be eliminated with an automat style service.

As minimum wage increases these jobs will be eliminated. At some point the wage will exceed the cost to automate. And I think it will be a bad thing, even if we produce the automation equipment in the US, it will eliminate entry level jobs that may be unskilled, but can still be beneficial for a young person to learn what it is like to work for somebody else, and maybe have some responsibility and see why they want to become 'skilled' in something.
Already i've seen some fast food shops opening up centralized call centers that answer the drive through for several stores.

During the Bush presidency, net total employment went up by 1.08 million jobs, private employment shrank by 673,000 jobs, federal employment grew by 50,000 jobs, and government employment grew by 1,753,000 jobs.

I'm a bit younger than you, but I remember when teens could legally work certain jobs (like farm work) with a work permit issued by the kids school. There were also restrictions on how many hours they could work. The movie industry has similar restrictions.

Well, the HHS segment of govt was growing at 8-9% throughout a good part of Bush's term(thanks to mandated increases put into law by Clinton), it makes sense that govt employment would grow.

SD: Back in the 70s when times were tough and jobs were scarce, my father, a WWII vet with a Masters degree was hired into their manager training program. He did not last because his learning disabilities kept him from being able to perform certain duties of his job.
However, if he did not have those disabilities, he would have been able to make a very good living working there.
You can get a job as a driver for Dominoes Pizza and then move up into management. And if you save your money and keep your credit good, then you can become a franchisee.
It just takes patience, persistence, and hard work. I would tell anybody out there who is struggling and who needs work to put aside your pride and put on the uniform of a fast food worker. I have done it for many years myself and in the end I saved a small fortune by learning to live frugally and by watching every penny.

Don't be too quick to knock McD's. I don't work there, but know someone who does. They do have an AWESOME profit sharing plan! (Better than most places!)
