Yes it is very difficult to get from the New Years Day paid holiday to Memorial Day paid holiday. I always take a vacation week in there to break it up. Easter is not recognized.

My sister teaches math at a high school in Massachusetts. They also have a week off in February in addition to Spring break, something I remember from growing up there. Plus they, and here in Maryland, get Rosh Hoshanah and Yom Kippur off if they fall during the week. As you said she also works 6 - 5 and on weekends too to keep up with the planning, grading, helping kids who are struggling, overseeing an official school activity like the honors club, etc.

I live in MD. The county I live in now doesn’t get off for Jewish holidays but the counties that I and my DH grew up in do get off.

Some pay over 9 months, and some pay over 12 months. First year teachers in Alabama wait 2 months for their paychecks since they start the first week in August and get paid the last working day of Sept. This is an Alabama thing because the state's fiscal year starts Oct. 1. Teachers earn their salary by working X number of contracted days. I think ours is 193 days (five days more than students attend). Our annual salary can be divided by those contracted days to find out our daily rate. If we don't work a contracted day for, say, inclement weather, we have to make it up even if there were enough student days in the calendar to cover the minimum. (An exception would be inclement days when the governor declares a state of emergency.) If you don't have sufficient sick leave to cover a six-weeks maternity leave or extend that leave, they will use the daily rate to adjust your salary when you return. When I retire on June 1, I will still receive 3 paychecks in addition to my teacher retirement check. That is because I already earned the salary; they just didn't pay it to me. It is in no way vacation money.

We get paid for 190 days. Winter, Spring, and Summer breaks are NOT work days. It’s what is so frustrating about people insisting that we get all this “vacation” time. Here’s our contract calendar.

That actually makes your district’s daily rate higher than mine. Wait. Maybe not. If you have 193 days without counting the federal holidays, and I have 190 days counting the federal holidays, then the equivalent would be I’d have 182 without the paid holidays. So your contract is actually 11 work days longer than mine. Interesting.

Okay, I get it now, thank you. The question is what counts as a work day and what does not, to total 190 or 193 or whatever the school system defines as a work year. Similarly students can't count as school days those when they are on break. And you can't count days you actually work but are not official work days, such as spring break.
Many moons ago when PTO was a new concept my company offered it instead of all of: vacation + sick + personal days + holidays. I actually worked Thanksgiving Day and New Year's Day (I was in IT) to keep those days in my PTO bucket, since I was going to be meeting then-DH in Spain. He was in the Navy and deployed.
