I was watching a Fox news special this weekend called "Freeloaders' with John Stossell. In it, he pointed out all kinds of wasteful government subsidies that we all pay for, but that usually only benefit the filthy rich.
One of those was ultra liberal, multi-millionaire rocker Jon Bon Jovi. He receives a farm subsidy that covers honeybees (he supposedly raises them). According to the special, he only pays $100.00 in N.J. property taxes for the massive mansion that he lives in . He also supported Jon Corzine for Governor. Corzine did little or nothing to help reduce property taxes in N.J..
I was reading the NY Times this weekend. In the real estate section, they list houses in the N.Y. metro area that sold recently. This week, they listed a house in New Milford, N.J.. A 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 72 year old rancher with a one car garage on a 150' by 50' lot that sold for $282,500. The property taxes are $8,149.

Same with Bruce Springsteen www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2698268/postsSpringsteen writes Letter to the Editor gawker.com/#!5787910/bruce-springsteen-writes-a-letter-to-the-editor ^ Posted on Friday, April 01, 2011 1:41:44 PM by kcvl Springsteen writes Letter to the Editor NEPTUNE, N.J. (AP) — Bruce Springsteen has written a Letter to the Editor to what he calls his hometown newspaper. Springsteen on Thursday thanked the Asbury Park Press for a March 27 article about how anti-poverty groups in New Jersey are facing an uphill battle as Gov. Chris Christie seeks to cut spending and property taxes. Springsteen writes that the "article shows that the cuts are eating away at the lower edges of the middle class, not just those already classified as in poverty." Springsteen says it will "likely to contin ue to get worse over the next few years." The letter is signed: Bruce Springsteen, Colts Neck. They mostly just benefit wealthy farmers and people like Bon Jovi, who pays only $100 in state property taxes on many acres of land. Because he raises honey bees, he qualifies for a honey bee subsidy. Bruce Springsteen also owns acres of property in New Jersey, but pays little tax on it because an organic farmer works the land. Durn libruls------Thursday morning, ABC’s Good Morning America suggested some of the Tea Party’s leaders have a case of “Hill Hypocrisy” for attacking government spending while taking millions in government money. ABC’s senior political correspondent Jonathan Karl reported “the Tea Party movement is all about slashing federal spending, but at least five House members with Tea Party connections have themselves collected more than $100,000 each in federal farm subsidies, totalling more than $8 million since 1995.” Watch the story here, from ABC News: www.mediaite.com/tv/gma-takes-on-tea-party-darlings-on-the-dole/

I think there is a thread floating around from last week on this item.

Based on the initial post, this is about Jon Bon Jovi.
By rights one of our cracker-jack mods should merge this thread into the other one.

This is a bi-partisian problem where when these things are legislated, multi-millionaires can exploit these things. A "break" should only be for those that need one. I don't know where the cut-off should be, but they should have put an upper cap on getting that, just like all those other tax breaks millionaires get.
Does he point out any Conservative ones or is he a hypocrite too?
And this is a perfect example of why libertarianism won't work. Hoping people will do the right thing (and hoping the free market will fix it if they don't) isn't the way to go.

Interestingly enough, what you say is true, but federal programs such as this would not exist in the first place.

Put in perspective, the median household income (2010 Census) in NJ is $70K (gross)- so that is before both federal taxes, and New Jersey's 6th highest in the nation (Tax Foundation) income taxes. That $8K in property taxes is the equivalent of a flat tax in of almost 12% on gross household income in New Jersey-- where property taxes have ballooned more than 70% in 11 years.
Property taxes are a nearly criminal institution. As you get older, and your largest investment increases in value, your taxes go up.
It's almost as if it's a progressive idea more insideous than the death tax-- if I didn't know better, I'd think it was a plan to ensure that all property reverted back to the state as you got older and had less power to do anything about it via increased earning power.
