We have 4 kids (not at home FT anymore) and 6 bedrooms in 1800 square feet. One of those bedrooms is in the basement, and the other is a few square inches too small to legally be considered a bedroom. We are both foreigners so when close family stays, they may stay for a week or three (my sister). We used to have a guest room, but we lost it for a while when DS3 (20) was born. In those days DS3 would sleep in his sister's room when we had guests. When DS1 turned 18 and left for college we turned the first basement room into DS1's bedroom (it has a window.) It wouldn't have been appropriate for a younger child but it was fine for a college kid home on vacation. Then we bumped all three younger kids up to bigger bedrooms and turned the smallest bedroom (ie the "not officially a bedroom") into a guest room with a convertible couch. That room is still officially "the guest room". We recently renovated DS2's room (downstairs master) so it's now DH's office/DS2's room/the second guest room. DS2 still has some Stuff in his room but there's plenty of closet space for guests now. DS2 and his GF still sleep over sometimes, which we love. When DS1/DDIL/Baby! (not local) visit they stay in DS2's room, because obviously it's out of the question to put Baby! in DS1's former basement bedroom.
That basement bedroom is turning into another storage space, although there's still a bed in that room. Like Gardening Grandma , we LIKE having guests stay over! It's only ever very close friends or family. They call our house "the best BnB in (our suburb)."
