plugginaway22 here generally people contribute to one big gift ... usually a trip, but also furniture/sporting equipment (ie matching bicycles for a wedding anniversary)/iPad/trees. DH got a (fake) Eames chair for his 60th. S got upmarket garden furniture. For A's 60th last year, we got her a wooden bench for her garden and rose bushes (A's favorite flower). I know some people on these boards object to that, but personally I think it's great. The person gets something they'll really enjoy, and it minimizes the clutter. Most guests contributed to my group gift, "a trip somewhere warm" (don't know when or where yet). I also got 2 shawls, a book, candlestick holders, plants, a tea thermos + chai, sundae glasses, alcohol, gloves and a choker. DH (besides the party!) gave me a beautiful photo album of our amazing summer trip. My kids gave me silver starfish earrings and a matching necklace. I lost a starfish earring years ago, so that made me very happy.

Love those ideas! You are right about group gifts not really being a thing here, unless it would be a group at the office who went together for something more expensive. Great gifts!! Happy Birthday.

Thank you friends! It's interesting that group gifts are more common here. And it's not just my circle of friends, because our (newer) theater friends do the same. I think often people find it easier to just contribute to something rather than have to find an idea and shop for it.
We brought A's glasses back, so they're out of the house. I didn't come close to finishing my list. Oh well, it's a short work week.
This week- thank you emails round 4 (group gift) - MSc 1: mark 13 finals - MSc 2: mark 11 finals - doc appt/Wed

Yesterday I went to a Christmas market in Bethlehem, PA, and resisted buying any more Christmas decor I also picked up a few gifts, and just had a nice day with my sisters and niece. Today was an icy/snowy/rainy day, so a good day to stay home and accomplish a bit. I brought more stuff down from the attic, including a bag of clothes and curtains that had obviously been visited by a critter. Some of the things were new and still in plastic packages. Anyway, another 20 items gone. There are also a few big empty boxes up there taking up space. The garbage and recycling cans are full, so I will get rid of those boxes in a few days.

debthaven , your special day sounds perfect. How wonderful to be surrounded by so many loved ones! Hope everyone had a fantastic holiday. I managed to not do much on Thurs and Fri., and made up for it Saturday and Sun by doing 7 loads of laundry including our sheets and shower curtain, and 3 dishwasher cycles. I finished clearing off the downstairs bar resulting in 21 items which will leave the house this week, along with the small pile of other Goodwill items. I also deep cleaned our bathroom , scrubbed the powder room and DH's wash room. ETA: Oh, yeah, I "de-cluttered" $30+ in coins from my penguin bank so I can cash them in to donate to a local fundraiser which helps buy gifts for children in need. Apparently, the most asked for items are underwear and PJs.

What a day. Some bright spark decided to force the level crossing two stops down on my train line. He felt the barriers were taking too long to come up. Turns out there was a second train. The front of his car was smashed, but he's fine. So no trains for 5 hours till they cleaned up the mess. I'm glad he's fine but I hope the police fine him (they took him to the station).
I was already at the station when I find this out (10 min in the other direction from work) so I drove to school. I was 5 min late (third time late in 9 years). A lot of students were late too. I ALWAYS check the train app twice: once when I wake up, again before I leave the house. It happened while I was driving to the station. I also don't drive when it's rush hour, especially both ways, because of the traffic. Happy to be home but way too tired to mark papers.

I am having one of those DAYS. A few weeks ago we had a new client come into a coaching program I co-lead and I was immediately put off by their demanding tone regarding everything. Despite getting so much done in 2 weeks they're already complaining about wanting more and my co-lead is talking to them today. It's hard for people to grasp sometimes that I am not, in fact, their employee to boss around. Besides the long weekend my power was out Monday which meant doing a lot of work offline and then updating it when the power came back.

Got the room rearranged to my liking. The bed is now one side against the wall which frees up space in the middle of the room. I'm one person, I don't need to be able to roll out both sides in this space. Also got the last little bit unpacked. Even got my laundry washed and dried. Haven't gotten it folded yet. lol.

I have had the misfortune in the UK of having someone commit suicide by train. That messes up everything for hours and the trains get all backed up. Sorry this happened to you.

TheO sadly suicides are pretty common here, especially at this time of year ... but people who force the barriers are rare. Today was supposed to be my last day of the semester but Job 2 asked me to come in tomorrow because of the strikes, since I drive and the teachers from Paris may not make it in. They have always been accommodating so I said yes. Plus, it's extra hours/money. I want to finish the other marks this week. I get the other finals in 9 days.
This week
- MSc 1+2: mark 24 finals - doc appt/Wed - monthly lunch voucher form/Wed
- Jobs 1+2: participation marks x 11/Wed
- Job 1: oral marks x 4 (first and second years)/Thurs
- Job 2: oral marks x 2 (first years)/Thurs - pharmacy

Finished from the listed posted December 1.
*Crafts -- Started remaking an items I was out of. Needed for the last two craft shows. *Plumber -- Called and was told to contact the Water Dept first. Filled out form on their web site, heard nothing and was able to contact someone a few minutes ago. They will come out sometime with the next two weeks to check the meter. *HVAC -- Checked and finished with for several months *Tutoring -- Haven't heard so I figure I will hear next week. Can't do it tomorrow and they usually don't need me on weekends. *Craft Class #1 done - *Home has been maintained and usual chores are up to date *Added a few more things to the donation pile *Tree decorations started -- more to do *Nutcracker Table is finished *Pile is filed

I've spent most of the last couple of weeks sitting around, watching movies and wishing I was more mobile. I AM BORED!
So...DD has a fairly new job doing marketing and other stuff for a doctor who specialized in skincare, botox and the like. She was responsible for setting up an event to bring in new and existing customers and planned a very nice wine and hors d’oeuvres event. She got L (my adopted daughter) to cater the event. A couple of days ago she said she couldn't find a fresh face to volunteer for a treatment to highlight the services offered. In my defense, I had a substantial amount of wine before piping in that if no one else would step up, I'd help out.
I just sat in a (very comfortable) chair and decluttered what I affectionately call my "squint"-the deep line between my eyebrows and the wrinkles in my forehead ( which I never even realized were so pronounced) on instagram live! I let a admittedly lovely woman inject foreign substances into my face.
This is not me. I only followed through because I promised DD that I would if no one else stepped up. I'm a baker. We in food service are opposed to food borne illnesses such as botulism.
I really need to heal and go back to work.

I'm sure your daughter appreciates the support malarky!
I let them do it every 3 months because it is the only thing keeping the migraines at bay. There's always some left from the second vial used and the doctor jokes I have no wrinkles or she'd use the rest on that.
I'm home this weekend and hoping to get a lot done and the Christmas decorations up. I have some ideas in my head but I've had no time to actually follow through. I keep plugging away.
My brother took us out to dinner last night.

This weekend my plans are to finish up some homemade Christmas gifts and finish wrapping. I am *this* close to being completely finished with Christmas gifts.
Also, to enjoy a very low key, wear my sweats all day weekend. The week ahead is CRAZY busy, so I need to mentally prepare.

I finally ordered a Christmas plant. That's it for my Christmas decorating. Not in the mood. I always get three or four amaryllis to force open and put in window! That’s it for me. But upside is I plant them outside after blooming for next year. They start blooming around March or April so I enjoy both for sometime.
