"less healthy" I second that. The casinos by me are filled with smokers. They all look a shade of grey. Some lady I worked with would spend all weekend there with her husband playing penny slots, drinking free sodas, and smoking. To each his own though.

DH and I like gambling. We're actually going to AC for 4 days in May as our "vacation". We play mostly penny slots - anything higher and we want it to be an actual game. The last time we went, we found a room full of nickel poker machines. We played for a while and it was fun. We both love blackjack but the tables are just too expensive. There was ONE time that we found a $5 table for blackjack -- ONE TIME! Other than that, it's at least $10 a hand and that can buy us 5-10 mins of entertainment at a penny/nickel slot.
Like others, we consider the money we gamble entertainment money. We only take as much cash as we're willing to lose, and if we win, great! The only sad thing about casinos IMO is the people who go there hoping to win. Oh, and people using the ATMs and getting cash advances in the casinos. I shudder to see the interest rates for those! You have to be pretty desperate and/or stupid to go to either.

Thank goodness AC made their casinos almost completely smoke-free. You can really tell the difference. Now instead of having smoke-free sections they have smoking sections. Then we went to Mt Airy in the Poconos -- smoke city!

I don't like to gamble at all ever. I have gone to the casinos mostly to take my mom but she knows I am bored. She has given me gambling cards and I might spend $3 on penny slots to kill time but don't enjoy knowing the odds are against me.
I have never bought a lottery ticket, if you don't play you can't lose.
I don't mind gambling on the stock market since the odds are I will make money, I made over 5K yesterday and almost 30K so far this year. That is more fun than casino games or lottery tickets even if I lose.

"less healthy" I second that. The casinos by me are filled with smokers. They all look a shade of grey. We live on a border state - one state allows smoking in casinos, the other doesn't. The smoking casino is old (hasn't been updated in 15-20 years), small, filled with smoke, and mostly older people who look grim faced. The other casino is new, large, fresh, and filled with younger people. It feels like a "happening" place to be. Unfortunately the state is trying to get the law changed to allow smoking in the casinos in that state too

No, I don't gamble. More than that, casinos make me incredibly nervous--all that money floating around, going back and forth makes me nervous and upset. The irony of this and one of the great frustrations of DH's life is that on the rare occasions he can talk me into gambling, (e.g., stuck overnight in Reno) I win.

I don't have the attention span to gamble - I get bored really quick... I buy the occassional scratch off lotto ticket or pick numbers ticket (and then try to remember to check it). I have no idea how people sit at slot machines or even video poker... I've sat at a table and played BlackJack but I kept wandering off mentally... I switched over to craps and found that to be kinda fun... I prepared for it before I got to Vegas - had a book with the rules, and 'practiced' before hand, went to a "lesson" at the table that the Casino provided and then had a good time playing... The last 3 times I've been to Vegas I played Craps - twice I came home with some winnings - the other time I lost my money but had fun doing it (winning, loosing, winning, loosing and was at a rowdy table so I felt it was worthwhile entertainment). I always have a pre-set amount for how much I'm willing to spend (gamble). It's the price of Entertainment and so far haven't had any problems sticking to it. There are sooooo many other things I'd rather do with $250 or $500 so it makes it easy to choose NOT to go and get more money to gamble away...

That is more fun than casino games or lottery tickets even if I lose. Well sure, but nobody ever puts $1 into the stock market and has it turn into 200 million three days later. That can happen in the lottery though. I know I'll probably never win anything, but it's $1 a week, and if I do win one of the top two prizes it's a life changing amount of money. Ultra high risk, ultra high reward. I figure that's worth some insignificant fraction of my investment money.

Yeah, not only is he not getting a slice of the pie, but imagine how much harder he's going to have to work and pick up the slack until 7 new people are hired and get up to speed. Yikes, sucks to be him.
Lesson - always play the office pool with your coworkers.

Did you guys catch this snippet from that link: Most likely, Hapeman said, the winners are spending time huddling with legal and financial wizards to plan how to handle the bundles of cash headed their way.
"Ninety-nine percent of the people coming in winners do it that way these days, and $319 million is an unimaginable amount of money," Hapeman said.
"Most want a plan before the money enters their hands." It almost gives me hope that Americans aren't complete financial morons.

I like to play low stakes poker with friends - the kind of nickel dime game where $10 or $20 buys you an evenings entertainment. Although I like Blackjack, I'm too cheap to play table games at casinos. I get hypnotized for a few minutes at slot machines and then cranky when I look up and I'm down $20.
I have better "odds" with the people watching, shopping and shows in Vegas.

I have a seperate account at the bank for my "gambling"
I usually go to track (horses) 2x annually (take $ 300 and either win or lose....never break even)
And i will go to AC or Vegas every other year
I take $ 1000 year to fund my account....if i lose....no more gambling till following year
If i win....50% of winnings goes to wife for her goodies....and rest back into account
I play poker....and tournament buy ins are $ 250 to $ 1000 for ones that i play (maybe four tourneys a year)
I consider gambling a form of entertainment....and only gamble with money i can afford to lose
I have been lucky (good) so far....and over the years have taken out of the account nearly 20k more than i put in.....
Because of that....wife never has a problem with the gambling....

I just came home from a trip to the casino to see this thread! lol! I won $200 today...Ever since I've been sick, I've had good luck at the casino, so at least there's a silver lining there.
Hubby and I used to gamble excessively before we were married, though not to the point we didn't save anything, or spent the rent/grocery money at the tables...That's just where all our fun money went. When we decided to get married, we funded our $35k+ wedding by taking a 3ish year break on the gambling.

Possibly $150 in my entire life. My net worth is $400K. Winning $1,000 or $10,000 isn't really going to change anything. $1M could make a difference though, so I'll put in if the coworkers have something big going on.

I've been to a casino 3 times and have won large amounts each time. I go with 100.00. The biggest win was 780.00 on one of those machines. I can't remember the other 2. I win, I run.
Every January I say I'm going to make it a point to play the lottery. Then forget until something like this comes up.

On the few occasions that I have gambled, I've lost. It wasn't much $$$, but it wasn't fun, so I don't do it.

Yikes, sucks to be him. Lesson - always play the office pool with your coworkers. back when I was a really green new hire, I organized the office pool. the email went out to everyone in the building (small building in a large campus) from my level up to the Senior VPs. I figured if we won, we'd all quit, at least offer it up to the VPs that would be left scrambling, right? well, one week, I got this snippy email from a rather sour woman in the office saying that she had "no interest in any of my 'gambling pools' and to please leave her off the distribution list" hmm....well, the email was appropriately titled, and it closed with a note saying "I apologize for filling your inbox if you are not interested. Please delete and ignore." or something to that effect. I just figured if we won, and I hadn't included people, there would be some ruffled feathers. guess you can't please everyone.

I am not much of a gambler. We have two casinos and I like going to the shows. These cost me anywhere from $25 to $40. Yes, they are has beens. If I do decide to gamble, it's no more than $20 on video poker. Last time I did that, I got it up to $40 and cashed out.
Back when I was still working, I did gamble with my DF. I have hit several royal flushes and gotten the 1099-G for the winnings. DF LOVES to gamble. We are not married. His house is paid for and he makes about three times what I do. Last time I accompanied him to the high stakes room here (when I went to Vegas with him, he wasn't doing high stakes yet), it was nice and quiet in there compared to the rest of the casino.
We were treated like royalty at the video poker machines. He likes to play some special game with really high losses and high winnings. Well, he hit 7 jackpots that night and we left there with $27,000 in cash. They comped us a room and all kinds of drinks so that we would stay longer.
He has no expression on his face when he hits the jackpot. He just moves to an open machine to play until the casino comes to pay him and unlock that machine. You would never knew he was the big winner. There were people screaming when they won, but not my guy. Calm, cool and collected.

We have a group at work that plays the lottery. It's $6/week (2 drawings per week). I fund it out of my 'fun money/allowance'. Hey, it's my retirement plan, right? ;D
We decided if anyone in the 'core' group (who play every week without fail) forgot to buy in, we'd let them. In the case of a big win, that is. We're still waiting for that to happen, LOL.

Not much. I'll buy a lottery ticket when the pot gets high, but other than that, no. I've been to a few casino's, and allow myself a set amount to gamble with. If I lose it all, no big deal.
