I don't even look at gas prices. When my gauge says 1/4, I fill it up. My car gets about 30 mpg and if I want to go somewhere, I'm going. I have bigger things to worry about than the price of gas. What if gas was $100 a gallon? I doubt most gas stations would have any at that point

I get 25mpg in the city, and drive about 12,000 miles/yr, so maybe 480 gallons. At $3.35/gal I don't think my driving habits have been affected much. Sure if it went over $5 I'd probably trim back 1,000 miles/yr round town or take one less trip up to St. Paul.
Sometimes I think it would be worth it to get a diesel car, athough they are rare. VW offers one, but I think I calculated that the difference in price means it would be many years of ownership before I actually saved anything. I just wonder if over time more efficient cars will get more expensive as the cost of fuel goes up

DH loves his gas guzzler truck, but I've been able to talk him into using my Jetta on the weekends due to gas prices. We both work a couple days from home a week (alternating days) but he refuses to drive my car to work. Our office is close, so no biggie, but I suspect his truck would be in the garage far more if gas goes up another $2.
As it stands, I dont pressure him to drive my car to work because then I'd be stuck with the truck in case I needed to leave the house....and I HATE driving his truck.

I drive about 6.5-7K miles a year right now and get 21.5mpg city and about 27mpg on road trips. Like a few other posters gas is a relatively small expense of mine so even if it were to double or triple I could manage. I wouldn't be happy if/when it costs that much and I'd probably cut back on fun money but it wouldn't be the end of me.

Gas jumped another dime today to $3.69. I was gripping at $3.24.
Bite your tongue, Archie. I would have to walk or bike most places; and in the winter, that would be awful. My bike and/or roller blades are coming out ASAP.

I'll add that last time gas was this high, I saw a lot of scooters starting to hit the road, not seeing them yet. Granted, it's been fairly cool and wet so maybe they are just waiting for better weather to pull them out.

Road taxes are coming to electric vehicle owners
Oregon is looking at charging electric-vehicle owners up to 1.43 cents for each mile they drive beginning with cars from the 2014 model year.
WA state is looking at a $100 per year tax on electric vehicles to cover for the loss of gasoline taxes.

Maybe the 1.43 will be used to pay the UE to all of those gas tank fillers that will lose their jobs? A weird law - after my first trip thru OR I now make sure the tank is full so that I can get from CA to WA w/o a fill-up.

I hate someone else filling up my tank because they seem compelled to try and round up the amount (most people pay with a credit card, what difference does it make to run it for $24.64 versus $25) and they end up spilling gas all down the side of my car. Once self service stations came out I avoided the 'full service' ones.
When I was in OR, I just told them how much I wanted which was enough to get me to about 3/4s full.

I used to hate having to pay someone to fill my tank ( when driving through Oregon) until the time I pulled into a station in eastern WA where a doofus was filling his motorcycle while smoking a cigarette! Rather than fill my tank next to him, I went inside to wait till he was done. The cashier understood exactly why. He said, " Yeah, sometimes the fools blow themselves up". :-)

I love having someone fill my gas tank! Especially because it's rainy all the time and I always have a kid in the car. OR has cheaper gas taxes than CA so even with someone filling our gas it's cheaper per gallon. Plus we'd have 50% unemployment without it.

I'm looking at replacing my car in 3-4 years (pay in cash), so will just suffer in not-so-silence until then. It isn't worth it right now to change anything (don't have all the money saved), or to have the transmission fixed (since my timing belt was replaced, my mpg dropped 2-3 miles), so I'm trying to drive better and not race anyone to the next stoplight!

...we already combine errands and stuff... and we already chose to live very close to work... so as gas prices increase, we'll just have to make more room in the budget for our transportation costs... entertainments and vacation plans would be the first big changes on the face of things, imo...
