Missed opportunity. That's the word I should have used in my OP. apparently hasn't lived long enough Appearances can be deceiving. I've been reelin' in the years longer than my youthful indiscretions would indicate.

You don't have to be a believer to enjoy religious music. I love listening to gospel choirs. Much of that has to do with the way a song is framed. Anything preachy will tend to turn people off. But part of the human experience is to share emotions. And if the emotional connection is made, the song has meaning outside the religious connotations. Here's one an old standard which doesn't have the joy and hope of gospel. But grief, sorrow and loss are powerful emotions too.

So clarify how you expected atheists to sermonize? The same way I would expect religious people to sermonize. As in, by and large most won't. And most of the people who've declared themselves to be atheists focused on the music itself, not whatever religious content it had. But there will always be a rare few who choose to make an issue out of anything. So I teasingly provided them the opportunity by saying don't. I'm all about providing opportunities to people, wherever and whenever possible.

It would appear the music board is a phantom zone where posts don't count anyway, since our post counts aren't increasing.
Not something I'd normally notice, but it seemed to me that you must have more than just 9 posts by now (19, as it turns out), though your profile counter hasn't risen beyond 9.
I'm no metaphysicist, but I believe this means that whatever we say and do on the music board technically doesn't exist outside the board. We're caught up in a parallel reality that ceases to exist when we return to the real world.

Posts on the music boards don't count towards your post count. Nor do they on the game boards.
My favorite (a cappella!) version of Hallelujah:

It would appear the music board is a phantom zone where posts don't count anyway, since our post counts aren't increasing. Any board can be set to disable post count. Music does seem an appropriate place disable it, to my way of thinking. It might seem that what's said and done in here might cease to exist when we return to the outside world. But it does have an element of persistence. Great music doesn't change you visibly. But it does change you. As do any of the arts and humanities.

moon/Laura , I'm surprised we got to the second page before anyone mentioned PTX. They've advanced the genre more than most other groups combined. It was rather sad last year when Avi left.

retread, agreed. Pentatonix is practically mainstream now. I, too, miss Avi. Amazing voice. Theirs is some of the only Christmas music I'll listen to, and even then it's only a few songs.

Christmas music was largely done as an afterthought by mainstream musicians. Karen and Richard did it with all the care and effort they did with the rest of their work.
Of course there are always a few works that are exemplary. The Velvet Fog and Nat both covered the same song. And both did it well. Bing was pretty solid with his Christmas songs, too.
I get so bombarded by Christmas music from mid-October through the end of the year that I almost dread it now.
I did a quick search in the little box at the Music Board's thread list. There was one thread where Pentatonix was mentioned (this one) although there was a mention of PTX somewhere in the Tunes thread. Deficiency is. But now that we've mentioned it, I'm sure someone will make a thread for them.

I believe you're right on the first part, and I wholeheartedly agree on the 2nd. Even Mannheim Steamroller and Trans-Siberian Orchestra - which I used to love because they were different - are now so overplayed that the enjoyment is gone.

I am agnostic, almost atheist... a bit confused and in the fog😁 i love, love accapella! Love music generally speaking, something from all genre including some Mongolian throat singers style songs. Not much for the religious hymns and such. Never cared for! However, my top two most favorite songs are Hallelujah- Leonard Cohen (sang by pretty much anybody) and from all songs...Little Drummer Boy! it is not about the words, the lyrics but the musical line and if is accapella is even better.

You want some music with that old timey religion in it? Really old timey?
And it's far from mainstream. I like it a lot.

I am agnostic, almost atheist... a bit confused and in the fog😁 There are times when most people can relate to that. Oh Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for What do I stand for? What do I stand for? Most nights, I don't know anymore (How's that for a segue?)

Alright, now I gotta start over! Thank you very much(not), retread!😀
For the last couple days I had that song stuck in my head and I found myself quite often whistling( I should add that I can whistle pretty much anything!) it. Over and over! I was finally getting to the point that it was fading. Not anymore!

This should be carried over to the religious threads. Most folks on the music board just love music and respect others choices and don't sit around trying to cause debate over what is good and what is bad. If I want a sermon I can just go to church. But it is made OK here for very obvious reasons!!!

But it is made OK here for very obvious reasons!!! Religious threads are commonly flamed on public message boards. The OP is apparently a message board veteran. While his approach to disarming hostile ideologues is probably one of the worst attempts I've ever seen (apologies for my frankness, sir, but we all live and learn), and YMAM is exceptionally good about not flaming feel-good religious threads, it would be wrong to conclude he intended to provoke local atheists. For one thing, he's brand new and unfamiliar with the culture of the forum. For another, trolls are blunt and unrepentant, and the OP has been anything but. retread: As a humble suggestion, you may want to change the thread title from "No Atheists allowed!" to e.g. "Gospel and a Capella Music". If somebody accuses you of trying to "bury the truth" (I don't expect it will happen, but it may), tell them you changed it based on my strong recommendation. If they persist beyond that, ignore them.

Congratulations, this is both a false equivalency and irrelevant. Well done.

I will admit I like Amazing Grace singer(s) to be a little less "angelic" and a little more "wretched". But I'm a guy who got booed by the audience when I was judging a local talent show and said that I thought (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay was not a good song choice for a twelve year old girl.

It was a spectacular choice for "Top Gun" however.

Oh, I'm sorry - was there a thread I missed explicitly No Christians Allowed? No Jews Allowed? No Muslims Allowed? No Hindus allowed? If there was, how long was it allowed to stay up? How many people objected to it? What's the likelihood I would have even had the opportunity to speak up two days later based on those factors? So, you're setting up a false equivalency. Do you know which threads I do and don't see at the Recently Updated Threads based on when I am and am not on the boards? Do you know which boards I spend time on given my mood and willingness to engage with people on a topic? Based on that, what are the chances that I'm aware of the religion-bashing occurring in any given post or thread? If I'm not aware of it, I can hardly be expected to defend against it. So, your point is irrelevant. You can think I'm a hypocrite if you want though. I really don't care what you think about me.
