Not really. Of course you're allowed in here. (EDIT: And you'll probably enjoy the music, regardless of the religious overtones.) I never really cared for the song, Amazing Grace, until I heard this version. It's got extra portions of Amazing and Grace. I've become increasingly enamored with acapella. Anyone else into it?

Funny, you can say no Atheists allowed in our society and nobody really says anything, but if you were to say No Jews, Christians or Muslims.........

The history behind the writing of this song is interesting. There are lots of different versions out there and I like a lot of them equally. Think my fav is - nah won't post here!!

My husband always loved this song, but we haven't discussed it since we left the church. I wonder how he feels now.

Was that directed at me? It was mostly the melody and rhythmic pattern that turned me off. It's a bit more sophisticated than twinkle-twinkle and mary-had-a, but not by much. Most people just play the ink, so it can be rather boring and comes across as an etude.

This atheist thoroughly enjoyed the music. Thanks for bringing it to share. You're certainly welcome. And since I'm all about inclusiveness, here's a song for the atheists! And it's acapella, my new favorite genre.

Take the Sound of Silence for instance!! S&G version to me is kinda meh even though I like but the version by Disturbed just friggin' blows me away.
I like Aaron Neville's version of Amazing Grace but also II Divo's version equally. Not to mention Andrea Bocelli, Judy Collins and others.

Motley Crue has a song called "too young to fall in love" which is pretty standard '80's glam/pop metal. It was redone by a woman in a haunting slowed down version. Amazing. I'll see if I can find it. ETA: Found it.

One of my all time favorite story telling songs (excluding any Pink Floyd songs) is Sam Hall by Josh White. The version by Cash puts ants on me. But this is an old folk song from England if memory serves me. Didn't get a lot of air play here because of the language.
Again just different versions.

I'll see if I can find it. It can be very interesting when a female records a song original done by a male. This remake of an Elton John song is one that amazes me.

It sure does. Some songs have enough as-written to captive our interest. Some just don't. And it's impressive when a performer or arranger can take something simple and blow you away with it because of added nuance. btw, I was never a big fan Judy Blue Eyes, but apparently Stephen Stills was. I think 2s and 4s have become so common that my mind isn't satisfied unless there's nuance like anticipation and hesitation. Or a complex pattern. 3s and 6s tend to be less done, and they have a natural lilt. Couple that with some complexity in the pattern, a talented arranger and stunning voices and you get something like this: I like the way Ingrid Michaelson writes so most of her songs feel right enough as-is. But that was icing on the cake, imho.

From what I'm reading (and watched afterwards), Fergie's rendition of the National Anthem isn't going to make any Top 10 list of songs done "differently". Goodness.
I guess it's like the Smithsonian portraits of the Obamas. You either like it or you don't.

Green Eyed Lady , I haven't heard Fergie's version but when people are making comparisons with Roseanne Barr's version, that isn't a good sign. Jimi ruffled a lot of feathers with his rendition but I loved it. Here's one that takes a more traditional approach but does include a few embellishments. Perhaps you'll enjoy it.

You don't have to be a believer to enjoy religious music.
I love listening to gospel choirs.

You don't have to be a believer to enjoy religious music. I love listening to gospel choirs. ^^This^^ I don't have to be a drinker to like songs about liquor, either. I don't have to be in love to enjoy love songs. I enjoy some gospel. This is one of my favourites and I'm an atheist.

I love this version mainly because when you look at the body of works of the different artist and they can still sing this song beautifully! But I should say that so far in all my listening to this song I haven't found anyone that screwed it up!

Not really. Of course you're allowed in here. Just spare us the rhetoric. Please elaborate. He's worried that a thread about gospel music will provoke criticism and atheistic sermonizing, and apparently hasn't lived long enough to realize that the "preemptive disclaimer" approach doesn't work all that well. retread: For reference, YMAM is pretty good about members not trolling "feel good" religious threads, such as music threads, saying-a-day threads. Don't mention atheism, even in jest, and you shouldn't have to worry about flaming. At least not on our board.
