If you look closely at where the drivers came from today they are from all areas of the country. It is no longer just a southern sport but a national business.
******************************
Should also be noted where all the new tracks have been built. It's not in the south.

NASCAR is the quintessential American sport when you think about it. Like our very country, it is an institution born of defying an unjust law that violated citizen's natural rights. There's very little more American than that.

BTW- as an aside, other than Saudi Arabia, The United States has the strictest alcohol regulations and laws of any country on earth to this day.

I can drive a car. Well, in fact. And when I drive I have to turn both left AND right in the same state. I think I'll become a NASCAR driver and make a ton 'o money. It'll be fun to listen to your team radio traffic as you try to tell them why the car isn't fast enough when it's going 190 mph. Or as you explain to the crew chief what the balance is in the car as you are making mock qualifying runs. Don't worry, I'm sure someone will explain what "Go or Go home" means once you try to qualify for your first race. Oh, and the cars.... roughly $250,000 each... you'll need 2 for each race.... and btw, different tracks need a completely different car. Open that checkbook wide. Yep. To say nothing of how many engines and transmissions you're going to need. And it wasn't that long ago that Jr. showed us what can happen during practice at Daytona this year...Not only did he have to go to the backup car, but he went from the pole position to starting dead last...

I have about 70 diecasts in 1:24 scale. Most are big & little E. I have a few of the cars you mention. I don't want to be crass but I bought Adam Petty's (RIP) car a week before he passed. I'm sure to someone that car would be worth something. I also collect historic Nascar. Significant releases for past drivers. I.E. Franklin mint 67 Petty Belvidere; Dw Aero Monte Carlos(Tide, Bud). Some day I would want to sell but need to compile list. Yes, I have boxes for each. Yesterday I made a statement about NASCAR moving back to a regional Southern series. I meant no disrespect to anyone othe than my perspective as a midwest resident who has followed racing of all types for 40 + years. Yes a lot of drivers are from all over N.A., including some international stars, but a majority do come from Southern states. Where they were born is another story. NASCAR as a business is struggling now. Just look at the stock price of ISC and you know attendance is down at all but a few tracks the last couple of years. I think they had visions for expansion into markets that once were hot but the excitement has worn down. I.E. Chicagoland. This is my opinion and I do wish the racing was more like it was a few years ago.

This post is humorous. It is obvious most know little about NASCAR. That's me...I admit I don't know a whole lot about it history wise. I started watching it when I moved to FL and got in a race pool at the VFW. And I got to liking Stewart just because a few I watched it with strongly disliked him because he was such a hothead.

I got Dale Sr. and pit crew's autographs on a photo the year he died at Daytona. That was getting ready to be a fantastic finish for DEI that year- it was really a shocking and sad end to what was shaping up to be a great start to the year for them. I also have hanging in my garage right now a full-size, geniune hood off one of Jr's actual racecars (Budweiser, Number 8)-- bruises and all, signed by him. I'm not much of a collector, but I go to a lot of estate sales and what not, and I bought that as part of a huge collection. I re-sold everything (probably too cheap) before I even left the auction to another collector who needed a month to get the money together-- otherwise he would have outbid me right there and then. But I kept that hood. It was too nice a piece to give up for what this guy offered.

NASCAR needs drivers like Stewart, Kyle Busch, Robby Gordon and Harvick. They have personallities that keep it interesting. NASCAR tried to keep them from expressing themselves as human beings and that has hurt NASCAR. Nothing like a good fight in the pitlane or winners circle to keep things interesting.

A little scuffle out of the cars is fine, but when you get these pissed-off guys intentionally bumping their rival's car at a buck 90, or even bending their fender under yellow...that is crossing the line IMHO.
