While it may happen sometimes, the extremes in both political parties seem to have a lot of pull in getting candidates nominated during the primaries. Of course, you also have those people who try to vote in the primaries of the opposite political party in hoping to get who they see as the most beatable candidate nominated. In any case, I wonder how many candidates could have a shot at winning the Presidential election, but do not even get that chance since they do not appeal to the more extreme partisans of their party.
It seems that candidates that do win the nomination in Presidential primaries do everything they can to appeal the extremes of their party, and then run as fast as they can to appeal more moderate in their views during the national election.

Not unless you considered Hillary Clinton a moderate since they voted the same way on most bills while they were both in the Senate. Yes, I know the media tended to leave that out while Obama was pretending he was somehow different.

Scott Brown is a moderate and he won. I think the candidates need to be who they really instead of pandering. I do think that the ring of truth goes much further than all their hokey BS. But, apparenty a lot of Americans take their politics off 30 second sound bytes so who knows? I don't really know enough about Scott Brown, but could he do it on the national stage?

Yes, i consider Clinton to be moderate. When you line up the spectrum... don't you?
I like Scott Brown, at least i haven't observed anything i dislike about him really... But i don't know if the extreme end of the party will keep him?

George H.W. Bush lost, Bob Dole lost, John McCain lost...the answer would seem to be, "no".

But, apparenty a lot of Americans take their politics off 30 second sound bytes so who knows? Scott Brown is a liberal. The only place he's a 'moderate' is up in MA. Hell, to them he's probably a radical right winger. Kinda like Mark Kirk is "extreme right" in IL.

And thus the crux of the problem...
Who gets to 'define' moderate...

How about not worrying about defining "moderate" and lets all work on electing "independent" people. Independent from the corrupt two parties who are monopolizing politics, selling their influence to their donors, spending money like drunk sailors and driving our country over a cliff. I personally could care less if they are "moderate" or not just would like them to be ethical and maybe demonstrate just a little bit of intelligence and common sense.

And thus the crux of the problem... Who gets to 'define' moderate... Definitions aren't that hard. Where does a candidate stand on issues? You can tell a moderate because they are the flip floppers who cannot seem to make up their minds or give you a straight answer. The only thing that survives in the middle of the road is the double yellow line.
