I eat my main meal at lunch 4 days a week. I never weigh myself but if my long underwear make my jeans too tight I eat lightly until they are comfey again.

I read somewhere not too long ago, that people who weigh themselves every day are much more successful with maintaining weight even than people who weigh 5x/week. I threw out 2 scales when DH and I downsized but then my weight started creeping up at monthly blood bank visits. (I donate platelets and plasma so am not restricted to every 8 weeks.) I gained 6 lbs. over 6 months- same scale, pretty much consistent clothing, same time of day. I bought a fancy scale that makes graphs on my iPhone and tells me my BMI, estimated body fat %, etc. I've lost a few lbs. Now I do weigh myself every day.

For the holidays, I think the best thing to do is keep up the exercise routine no matter what. That usually helps me eat better as well. In the past, when I was on a diet I would create a meal plan and kind of stick with it 4 days a week, then totally off for 3 days. Now I pretty much follow the rule of 4 servings of veggies, 2 of fruit, and no fast food/fries/etc, lots of water.. I find if I do that, I don’t binge at all.

One other thought that has helped me through the years
It's a holiDAY, not a holiMONTH
Also when at a buffet, take just ONE spoonful of anything you want ........ then if you are still in the mood, go back for ONE MORE spoonful of what you want.
I know I'm full after my second trip and can avoid anymore.

If you weigh yourself daily, try to make the conditions the same from day to day. Like do it first thing in the morning, after you go to the bathroom and before you dress or eat/drink anything. That way youll have the most accurate comparison.

No matter what, go get your exercise in every single day. You'll feel better about yourself once it's done.
Another easy way for me to lose weight is just to refuse to eat anything I haven't cooked myself for one week. I have a major weakness for fast food, especially Whataburger. Forcing myself to eat only things I've cooked at home makes me eat healthier.

My best tip has always been doing whatever I want during the holidays, then getting a stomache bug in January which helps you lose 5 lbs or so.

Unfortunately, my self pity medicine is quality chocolate-bad choice as Valentine's Day approaches.

I'm now seeing how the holiday season triggers some of my childhood eating disorders.
When I was around 11 or 12 my mother read the book "Sugar Blues" and threw everything out of the house that had refined sugar because according to the book there was a conspiracy to make us sick.
While I believe it's true that people like sugar and will develop a tolerance for it especially if one eats a lot of processed and/or prepared food, a little bit can be o.k. as a treat.
Ironically (or maybe not) my parents had weight problems most of my life as they swung from deprivation to self indulgence. This despite doing some serious exercise in their 40s, including a few marathons.
Moderation wasn't in their vocabulary. I need to work on ensuring I don't follow that pattern.

This is me (without the deprivation part)! I did the deprivation part when I had anorexia, back in my 30's. So now I'm making up for it! bwahaha

Herschel Walker, the 3-time consensus All-American RB at Georgia who won the Heisman Trophy in 1982 before starring in the NFL has a legendary workout regimen of 750-1500 pushups and 2000 situps every day. I remember reading an interview with him where the writer was obviously trying to pin him down on some sort of 'secret' in his workouts, some specific amount of time or number of reps he does that give him his physical strength and keeps him in such great condition (seriously, he is freaking stacked at 55 years old, he recently competed professionally in MMA, and was an Olympic bobsledder in 1992). Walker just kept repeating, "I worked out until I felt I had a good workout." There are a lot of people who will tell you to just go walk for 20 minutes or 30 minutes or do this program. I think they're obsessing over numbers a little too much. Just go out and do something you enjoy doing for exercise. Do it until you feel like you've done a good workout, and then go do something else. If you stick to this mindset every day, you'll be shocked at how much healthier you will look and feel.

These last almost two years have been with me in a healthy weight range.

I'm happy with my current exercise routine; 1 cardio class, 1 yoga class, 1 light weight lifting class (Body Pump) and 4x hiking anywhere from 5mi to 10 miles.
Then the last two summers has been training for a backpacking trip in the fall. And I always lose weight on the backpacking trip.

Well one difference is that staying in shape was Herscel's full time job. I might be able to make it to 2000 sit-ups if I had all day to work on it - well maybe not quite 2000. It is important to "find time in your life for exercise" but there is no way I am going to find 3 hours to work out like that. Not if I want to keep my day job.

I have 2 tricks
1) Eat a shit-ton of vegetables. Every meal, every party, every day. The fiber will help.
2) Eat healthy and small when no one is around. I know there are a lot of functions, but no one spends all of December eating 3 meals a day with others as a special occasion. Reel in breakfast. Pack your lunch. The nights your dinner is just dinner, make it small, healthy and full if vegetables.

It is important to "find time in your life for exercise" but there is no way I am going to find 3 hours to work out like that. Not if I want to keep my day job. I don't recommend anyone try Herschel's workout, I just pointed it out as background for my 'freak of nature' comment. Herschel was genetically blessed in a sport where just about anyone playing at a high level is genetically gifted, and he was a standout over them. He and Bo Jackson were absolute freaks without having to lift a single weight. When Herschel arrived at Georgia as a freshman, he set the program bench press record with a lift of 315 lbs. He had never lifted a weight prior to that time. Until he did his rehab after his hip replacement, Bo Jackson never lifted weights. Yet he won the Heisman in football and was an All-Star in MLB. Genetic freaks. Some people commit to doing a very modified version of bodyweight exercises. Just doing 10-20 pushups and situps a day for 10 days, breaking them up to do as many as you can throughout the day, makes a noticeable difference. You don't need to find 3 hours in your day to exercise. If you get on the floor and do 2 pushups and 2 situps during every commercial break while watching television for an hour, you'll knock it out easily.

Tip for maintaining your weight or stay at your desired weight: 1- buy a roll of white sports tape. The 2” wide kind. It works best! 2-buy a thin tip Sharpie 3- write your desired weight on a piece of tape approximately 4” long 4- tape the freshly marked piece over the display screen of the scale. From this day forth you will weigh the same so you can go and indulge yourself with whatever your heart desires. Remember, YOLO!😀

I've been pondering this for a few days. What DO I do to maintain my weight? It's not something I consciously do, I don't diet, I don't deliberately exercise, I've never counted calories.
The answer hit me today as I was digging out the end of the driveway after we got an all day snow. I do things the hard way, deliberately. I shovel the driveway out, instead of snowblowing. I mix cookie dough by hand. I knead dough, and stretch mozzarella cheese for pizza. I haul books around all day at work. My kitchen is upstairs, and my fridge downstairs, so I go up and down a flight of stairs dozens of times a day at home, and quite a few flights at work, too (was decorating for Santa's visit tomorrow, so down to basement storage over and over, and took things up to the second floor community room, etc.).
As far as eating, I eat what I want. I rarely eat fast food or restaurant food, I find it way too salty, and I feel uncomfortable afterwards. But my mom has a culinary degree, so I grew up with an abundance of especially desserts around. If she was making wedding cakes, there were always piles of the domes she'd cut off the layers to get them level. We could just break off pieces of these and help ourselves, swiping it with icing if we wanted. Dad likes Danish, so she always had some for his lunch. If she makes cookies, she makes a dozen kinds. At any holiday dinner now, she'll have at least 3 kinds of pie, or mousse, or cakes. Always having access, we learned to be choosy about what we wanted. Those cake domes? I'll go for a bite of butter cake or chocolate, but never white cake - it's not my favorite. Skip the frosting altogether, it's too sweet to me. Danish - only my favorite poppyseed ones (dirtcake, my dad says his immigrant mom called it). When mom has a picnic and puts out munchies for the kids and everyone else, I pick more fruit and veggies than chips, or something like Texas caviar over dips.
I don't need to taste everything, I just go for my very favorites, or maybe try something entirely new to me over the old standbys.
Oh, and at parties, spend more time talking with others, so I am not mindlessly eating.

Yes, this! I like to refer to it as "cheap exercise"....I do the same. The washing machine is downstairs and it drains into a wash tub that pumps the water up to the drain. Anyway, it is supposed to shut off automatically, but it doesn't always works, so I'm constantly running up and down the stairs to check to see if it has finished pumping the water out and if it has shut off. If it hasn't stopped, then I have to run a little water or unplug it and plug it back in... The recycle bins are in the basement....everyone else just opens the door and throws crap down the stairs (going to break my neck one of these days because of them! ) where 90% of the time, I actually take the stuff down and place it in the bins. Also, the beer is in the basement, so plenty of trips downstairs for that!

Yummm.... I was gifted a big box of Godiva chocolates today. In an effort to maintain my weight, I will temporarily stop eating them, when I start throwing up! (I plan on enjoying every single one!) I hope you all are successful with your weight goals.

Bonny, I'm impressed by your workout schedule! When I get a workout in before I leave in the morning I feel amazing, and I am less inclined to ruin it all with poor eating. Things I've been doing this season: I put off my first meal of the day until lunch. I make a conscious effort to get in my fruits and veggies. I drink a ton of water, all day long. I try to fill up on regular food so I don't binge on sweets (my downfall). I remember that I'm still setting an example for my kids.
My weight has crept up this year, due to numerous factors: a move, new job, super relationship stress, and too much drinking and fast food (probably due to all the other factors). So I can't afford to gain 5 pounds over the holidays. I cut out drinking, except for a glass or two during a weekend get together. And I am eliminating fast food- not that it tastes great, but it has been my comfort when life starts to get overwhelming. It's everywhere, right when I need it. Now I look forward to coming home in the evenings and making something simple, like eggs, toast and fruit. Cooking anything fancier gets reserved for weekends, or enjoyed at holiday parties.

I was gifted two boxes of goodies yesterday. I didn’t restrain myself enough. 😣 Fortunately, I'm rarely on the receiving end of edible gifts- my financial advisor sends me a box of goodies every Christmas but he knows I'm health-conscious so it's never 100% high fat/high calorie/high sugar. One year an executive in my department gave all of us boxes of Christopher Elbow chocolates- he's a local artisan and his chocolates are works of art. I think each box had 6 of them (and still probably cost a lot). I had one every day till they were gone. They were delicious.

I just got gifted 3 boxes of chocolate and a dozen donuts. Donuts are for our entire office staff. All 3 of us. And 1 who doesn't like sweets. I did need the sugar buzz since I'm in danger of falling out on the desk but wow.... I'll have chocolate for a month or 2 if I'm good.

My friend Anthony gave me my Christmas present last night at the party. He told me I could open it at home. I kept glancing at the large, flat, brightly-wrapped package on the seat next to me on my way home and thinking "Please don't be chocolate! Please don't be chocolate!"
It's a giant slab of smoked wild salmon.
Whoo Hoo!
