NBC News fired "TODAY" show host Matt Lauer, the company announced Wednesday. "TODAY" show hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb made the announcement on air Wednesday morning, saying they learned the news "moments" before. I'm hoping the younger generation has been raised differently. So far, no one under 35 has been exposed (no pun intended) but that could be because there aren't as many "powetful" young people.

Will Alabama protect its brand and not elect Moore due to the charges of sexual molesation of a minor and a barely legal teenage girl when he was in his 30s?
Will the United States protect its brand and remove trump from office due to the multiple sexual harassment claims filed against him?
Trump of all people should not be commenting about the firing of Lauer.

The initial statement that they released regarding the firing will be demonstrated to be incredibly disingenuous by then. ETA: I'm trying to point out that the "gone within 48 hours" and "only complaint" claims are horsefeathers. Unfortunately, I'm beginning to have some doubts regarding the speed with which it will be shown to be such. We may have to wait for the print folks to break this story. Publicly questing the story put out by NBC's HR is not a good career move for anyone who may ever want to work for NBC and journalism is a contracting industry. We may have to wait for someone with a face for radio and a voice for print to speak up and poke holes in NBC's claims.

Well, for starters both the NYT and Variety are alleged to have been pursuing a story regarding Lauer. I find it hard to believe that NBC was unaware of this probing.
Then there's the question of whether Lauer would have been worth $20 million a year after those stories broke.
Or maybe there's recordings.
It's extremely unusual for someone to get canned within 48 hours. It will be interesting to find out why this claim is being made by NBC and I doubt that it will hold up to much scrutiny.

The NYT article titled NBC Fires Matt Lauer Over Sexual Misconduct Allegation mentions that the woman who made the complaint was accompanied by a civil rights lawyer during the Monday night meeting and that she had met with the Times earlier in the day. Ari Wilkenfeld, a civil rights lawyer with the firm Wilkenfeld, Herendeen & Atkinson in Washington, said he represented the woman who made the complaint to NBC, but declined to publicly identify her. In a statement provided to The New York Times, he said:
“My client and I met with representatives from NBC’s Human Resources and Legal Departments at 6 p.m. on Monday for an interview that lasted several hours. I wil likely read on this later as my second thing to accomplish today is car inspection and ideally a third thing tonight if inspection is fast & well.
I think Alabama will screw up, given what some posters have said. They will be too focused on feeling someone is telling them what to do, and lose perspective. The important thing is do *you* want him elected given all your choices and are *you, Alabama voters* willing to live with the fallout should the majority choose wrong?
With the big sun outside I feel today and this general season is all about personality. Trump will be in his glory and will likely make some big blatant mistakes in the next few days.

I thought that there had been a permanent change in the workplace climate. Back in the 1990s, when folks spoke of sexual harassment, they spoke mostly of hostile environment. Very little breath was given to quid pro quo or groping. It was pretty much assumed that everyone understood that those were wrong. All of the focus was on offensive sexual speech and behavior, and after Oncale v Sundowner was announced, there was no reason to mull over why someone was being a jerk. It was legally immaterial whether the jerk was getting sexual or emotional satisfaction from the offensive acts. What mattered was whether the acts were offensive to the victim and whether they would be offensive to the "reasonable person".
So why do so many of the recent scandals involve something as no-brainer as pressuring a subordinate for sex or touching them in a sexual manner without consent? We appear to have regressed. What happened?

But, the people who were very powerful probably had the "I will pretend to support the non-hostile movement, but because I'm special, I'm still allowed to touch. I just have to be a little more sly about it." So, the average joe, and the average office did change, but the people who think the rules don't apply to them didn't really change their ways.

Can anyone clue me in on why the Variety story that chiver and I saw has disappeared from Google News? It was the third in the list for a hot second, on the first page of results. Now it's just not in the results. I've scrolled through the entire "full coverage" list twice and it isn't there. Stories that reference it are included, as are other Variety stories from earlier in the day, but the one that I linked is absent.
The link still works, so it isn't as if Variety has taken the story down. I just checked that.
