the big hit for our gathering was the deep fried turkey my BIL made. I got that carcass, and let me tell you, the stock it made is damn tasty.

My BIL smoked a turkey breast. That was tasty.
My mother made homemade cranberry sauce, which is so, so, so much better than canned.
I got the thumbs up for my carrot recipe. (NY Times Cooked Morrocon Carrots)

Rukh- I see you mentioned carrots. Do you make your own tomato pasta sauce/gravy (down south they call pasta sauce gravy)? If you do, add some grated carrots to the sauce while cooking it. The carrots temper the acidity of the tomatoes and add a touch of sweetness to the sauce. Pretty tasty. I use strips of green bell pepper instead of carrots when I make sauce. same idea, but I don't like carrots. I am not a fan of carrots either. But they do have their use. With the carrots in the pasta sauce, you don't see them, you don't taste them. Because they are shredded, they break up in the sauce.

I made a key lime pie that was good. Also a trusty pumpkin pie, but had more of it left over.
As usual, I grossed the in laws out by eating my pumpkin pie with honey on top, not whipped cream. Must be a Pennsylvania Dutch thing, I guess - everyone in the South thinks it blasphemous. Maybe so, but it's also yummy.
The very best thing was my DH, who hates the current president, managed not to get into a fight with his sister, who is to the far right of right wing. Success!

I tried sauteed squash, instead of boiled/mashed. I loved it, even if my veggie squeamish DH & youngest passed.
Mom's flop - multi color baby carrots. They lost their pretty colors cooking together. She'll try roasting them next time.
One thing I missed, just for nostalgia's sake: grasshopper pie. I can't really complain, mom made pumpkin, apple, and chocolate pies. We just always had to bring grasshopper to Thanksgiving dinner at my aunt's house when we were growing up.

honey is interesting. I might try maple syrup, but the watery thin real stuff. I'm not a honey fan though.

What failed? What is something you want to try for next year? Cannoli were a great success. My 9 year old niece at hers, and said, "Uncle Beergut, you should start a business and just sell these." Gonna make her an entrepreneur yet. The green bean casserole was much loved. Brother's roommate said that was the only thing she requested, and she loved it. Big secret? There is no such thing as too much fried onions Next year, I'm going to go ahead and make dinner rolls. Brother used the Pillsbury crescent rolls from the can, and they tasted way too sweet to me. Overachieving on the fried onions is the key to a successful green bean casserole. I am entrusted with the production and delivery of the green bean casserole every year and always make sure to add plenty of fried onions. Then I add a little more. And some soy sauce. Soy sauce (it takes more than you think it will) elevates the umami of the sauce and interacts well with the fried onions. Yum.
Other than that, my personal success from this Thanksgiving was to get through the entire meal without getting any gravy on my shirt.
Glad to year your Thanksgiving meal was a success, Beergut!

my Paula Deen potatoes were received pretty well... by me. Actually everyone said they liked everything, which I'll take as a win.

People laugh, but my mother is physically incapable of going out to eat somewhere without feeding her shirt. Food just seems to dive bomb her clothes.

It always seems like I make spaghetti when I'm wearing white, and I always seem to get some of it on me. I've taken to changing into something darker before doing dinner (because I can never get that stain out).

SIL's green bean casserole was a hit. She paid an outrageous price for fresh washed and snipped green beans and then made her own white sauce and laced it with cheddar. The result was remarkably tasty and I'm trying not to be resentful for what it means for me. I'm not going to be able to get away with opening cans and dumping after this.
The rest of the meal was depressing. We've gotten a bit too fixated on the traditional fixings and sides and quite a few of the attendees are traveling long distances or too elderly or too young to be expected to bring a knock-out dish.
After this year's over-cooked pies, over-cooked turkey, under-cooked stuffing, completely forgotten salad, and mom's little retirement to the master bedroom in tears before dinner, I'm all for serving a rice-bar style chicken curry next Thanksgiving. It might not be (anyone's) tradition but it can't be nearly as stressful as what we tried to do last Thursday and it will be a meal unlike anything else that we've had all year.

I was caring for my grand dogs, so I made them a special meal... A few green beans and 2-3 small bites of roast chicken breast (no skin). It really pleased their mom, that I thought of her "kids". Her sister told me, then others, "She is the best dog sitter ever!" That made it worth it.

I made green bean casserole from scratch--fresh green beans, sauce from a roux, bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, freshly made bread crumbs, parmesan. I did buy the fried onions because the one year I tried to fry my own shallots, it didn't go well.
It did not dawn on me until I saw this thread tonight that I FORGOT TO PUT THE FRIED ONIONS ON THE DAMN CASSEROLE!!!
Oh well; no said anything.
Poor DD#1; she made the pies for the dinner we had with her. She was so afraid of over-cooking them that she under-cooked them.
The turkey DH roasted for dinner #1 was phenomenally moist. I do know he used almost an entire bottle of white whine during the process. He also put apples and pears into the roasting pan.

One year, the highlighted (over cooked and under cooked) was my mother's problem. The turkey was still a bit frozen in the middle when the outside was more than done done. We only ate the parts that were well cooked.

Alas, the bunny DS5 has now is an herbivore, and wouldn't appreciate this treat.

She is indoors, we generally keep her in a large cage because she likes to chew electrical wires. Not really litter box trained, there are trays beneath her cage to catch droppings, but she has one corner of the cage she's designated her potty.
She really hates roaming on bare floors, they're too slippery. She will refuse to leave her cage if we've rolled up the rug.

I used to blame their little greasy hands for any stains on my shirts below the boobs because I couldn't fathom how any food got past them. Since the youngest is now taller than me I guess I must admit I'm better than I thought at spreading out the stains.
