Like countrygirl2, I've had so much overwhelming stress in my life that I've become a champion at compartmentalizing. The "fight or flight" response and a huge ball of anxiety live just below the surface with me. It is a daily battle. But, I've learned to shove it way down and act as cool as possible for the benefit of my kids. I then manage all of that emotion by using highly-tuned research skills to become an expert on the matter of concern because information gives me relief and allows me to relax. Using knowledge, I develop coping skills and strategies to handle the stressors in my life. I am also an inveterate optimist/glass-half-full-kind-of-girl who is highly-skilled in putting things into perspective: "this is bad, but X is so far worse so I/You have nothing to complain about". I just had my first completely thorough check-up in years and, despite, in spite of?, the constant stress in my life, I am disgustingly healthy on all fronts, so clearly I am managing things successfully from a health point of view. Still, what I wouldn't give to be able to just shut off the "caution!" signals in my mind.

I handle stress okay in the moment, but later on I break down. I'm kind of the opposite. I overreact at first, then regroup and figure out what I need to do to tackle it. I'm at MPL's end of the spectrum when it comes to stress. I tend to overreact, imagine the worst, get raging mad (though I show none of this), then sleep on it for a day and come back, regrouped and handle it just fine. I keep reminding myself of so many people in much worse situations, who would be happy to deal with my relatively small first-world problems.

Video games. Nothing like escaping the real world into a virtual world. Beats drinking and gambling at least.

If I can, I read. Yes reading is amazing for stress! When I was going through a separation and divorce it was the only way I could shut my mind off for a little bit.

If I can, I read. Same principle. Playing video games or listening to audiobooks helps you forget about your worries foe a little while. Like anything, it can be taken to an extreme, but in moderation it can help take the edge off.
