When I went on my first long trip after DH died I realized that none of the keys I could find worked on the front door. I ended up locking the front door and exiting through the garage and taking the garage door opener to Central America with me. (I had a car service take me to the airport.)
I replaced the front door lock but haven't had spare keys made and really need to do that. DS lives 3 hours away so it wouldn't be practical to get the spare from him if I locked myself out so I'm going to find a good hiding place- maybe in one of those fake rocks, hidden in a less-obvious place such as the gardens on the side of the house.

Our outer side door doesn't even latch properly, let alone lock. When we go away we prop it shut with a 2x4, and go out by the front door and lock that, but day to day we don't lock things up.
We have a key for my parents' home.

Our spare key is hanging in the garage and the kids and g-kids know the garage code to open the door.
Seems the easiest for us.

After I locked myself out on Christmas day I now have a hidden spare key.
(had to ask the neighbor if could call my sister and then wait in their house until she arrived 30 minutes later)
A different sister that lives closer also has a key.

My in-laws have a set of keys, and they only live a mile away. Thankfully they only let themselves in when told to.
If we have a contractor coming we trust, we put a temporary code on the detached garage and leave keys in there.
We do have a key hidden in the backyard, but only for the doorknob. That way if you accidentally lock yourself out, you can get back in, but when we intentionally lock the door that includes the deadbolt, which does not have a key hidden outside.

My garage door is unlocked tonight because a repairman is coming tomorrow. I will be home but I want him coming inside through the garage, not the house.
It will be locked when he leaves.

No hidden keys. No one else has a key to the house either, just the garage. I'm paranoid about getting locked out, so I always carry two sets of car and house keys.
Plus at one time I heard that if someone demands your keys or wallet you shouldn't hand them to them, but throw them at/beyond them. I figure if I have two sets of keys I can do that, then while they're distracted I can get in my vehicle and run their asses over.
