Title changed so people notice the high school part Do you know how hard it was for me not to get derailed on all the things that have happened in my lifetime I almost posted that I remember when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's records but that sounded so shallow

It is before 5 in the morning, the house is silent, and I am thinking about the specific title and the challenge of "coloring inside the lines" for me. The high school I went to was a three year school and I only made it for a couple of those. That means that it was less than 1/30th of my life. OMG, your post made go back and edit mine. Hi school was 3 yr and I had 9 thru 12.

I believe I was in 8th grade for the OJ verdict? I remember talking about it as the verdict came during the banking/personal finance class I was in. We learned how to fill out checks! Haha. I was a junior in high school when the Columbine school shooting happened. I remember all the discussions we had in classes after that, and I think that was the beginning of "Dr. Emory." If there was an unauthorized person situation at school, someone waa supposed to get on the loudspeaker and call Dr. Emory to the office or wherever. I was a sophomore in college on September 11th. I had an 8 a.m. class until 10, immediately followed by a 10:10 class. I had no idea what was going on until the second class, and when someone told the class a tower collapsed I left out an incredulous laugh. More like a nervous laugh, not a haha laugh. I couldn't visualize a building collapsing to the ground. I was imagining it had tipped over and was leaning against another building. I don't know why. I just couldn't believe what was happening until class was over and I went back to my apartment. My roommates and I were just glued to the tv all day and did take a lunch break. I still remember how incredibly beautiful the weather was that day. Amazing blue sky. Omg, Meg. That's my most vivid memory of that day too besides watching the news, the blue sky and crisp beautiful fall day. I was at my second or third day of college, and my first class didn't have a room yet so we sat outside one of the buildings at picnic tables. They cancelled classes after about 11am but we weren't told why. I was taking the bus/train home for the first time that day and didn't have a cell phone yet, so I sat at the train station and listened to people chattering about how 20,000 people were dead and just had no idea what was going on. Got home and my dad had been sent home (non-essential state employee) and we just watched the news and I napped, because I'd been in Boston at a concert that night before until like 1am. Columbine is probably the event I most would remember from high school? I must have been a sophomore.. my mom made me stop wearing the trench coat I had. Late summer, damn it! Fall begins third week of September. 😁

Ditto. Completely overlooked the "in high school" part. I was a junior for the Bicentennial. I was 3. 😠

My high school was founded in 1892. I started there in the late 70's.

In Florida, the Challenger launch was a huge deal because one of the astronauts - Christa McAuliffe - was a Florida teacher. So to celebrate one of our own teachers being sent into space, most of the schools had the students watching the launch both outside and on TV. Ooops. I remember I was in biology class. The launch happened, then the explosion happened then for several minutes the only noise was the gurgling of the aquariums while we all held our breath... It was a big event everywhere. I was in history class and we had the tv on to watch it. Everyone was so excited. Then complete silence and sadness when we realized we just watched fellow Americans die right before our eyes.

Yeah, I had to laugh when one of the other posters pointed out that McAuliffe wasn't from Florida. Makes you wonder about some of the things you "learned" at school. Who knows why the teacher who told us that (Biology teacher, usually seemed pretty accurate) said she was from Florida? Maybe he made a mistake or maybe he was joking, but I didn't realize it. As life goes on, wonder what else I'll find wasn't true. Also made me realize how many details just don't matter. If making the students think a teacher had a local connection made them find what is otherwise a pretty boring event more interesting to them, not sure there was any harm. After spending the last 5 days in Washington DC and more museums than I can even list, I've decided that so many of the details we get hung up on are not only totally uninteresting, they just don't matter. The most interesting and engaging, meaningful memorials and museums focused on things like meaning, interactions and people and much less on details that didn't add to the importance.

Man, I was really oblivious to current events as a teen. I've been wracking my brain trying to remember. Reading thru all the posts, Charles and Diana's wedding is the only one I could definitely remember happening during HS.
The big event I remember in college was the Challenger disaster. I saw almost no TV while in college, I just overheard the general gossip in the Student Union. The story going around was "the shuttle blew up". Half the students interpreted that as the shuttle bus around campus was what blew up, not the space shuttle.
9/11 is the biggest "I remember exactly where I was when I heard about it" event. DS4 was 3 and watching JayJay the Jet Plane on PBS, when words started scrolling across the bottom of the screen. I'd never seen that on PBS before, especially during kids shows. I remember reading "planes hitting the WTC" and catching the word planeS - plural - how could more than one hit the same place? Switched to ABC in time to see the buildings fall. Later I got a call from my mom - she and dad had been at the airport to pick up dad's brother, coming for their sister's funeral. His plane was in the air over the D.C. area at the time the Pentagon was hit, so his plane was rerouted to land somewhere. He (and everyone else) rented a car to get back home to Florida. He shared it with another passenger; they got the last one.

I graduated 3 yr HS (10-12) in 1976. There was so much going on in my life (pregnant, married, complete HS & graduate with student body, had baby, bought first house), I don't remember a particular event that happened, that we watched on tv, or that interrupted our regular class schedule. Ever.
I remember being at my friend's house and watching the moon landing on her black and white tv, for all of about 15-20 minutes. Then we went back outside to play. It was too hot inside and people didn't have a/c back then. -My family had a huge swamp cooler on the roof. No one else I knew had a/c except for a few people that had it in their car.
The thing that sticks out in my head, is that school got out for the summer the 1st week of June usually and started in September. There was no year round schooling then.
In elementary school, we read about segregation and the riots in the Weekly Reader. And although there were no blacks etc in our school, or area, I couldn't figure out why you would treat them differently.
The elementary school I went to was the first in our city to be built for, and to have open classrooms called pods, where 4th, 5th and 6th graders shared the same 4 teachers, at the same time- based on skill level. You were given a tote tray for all your books, supplies and belongings and you took it with you to each class. The rooms/pods were carpeted and had absolutely no walls or dividers between them. Different subjects all being taught at the same time, to over 120 students. It worked for us.
We stood and said the Pledge of Allegiance every day, at the beginning of school.

JFK's assignation. We were told just before dismissal. The quietest exit and bus ride home ever.

I must have been pretty oblivious to current events when I was in high school. I even did a google search to jog my memory and the only thing I actually recall being a big deal was the TV mini series Roots. There was lots of buzz among my friends about that. I'm not sure if that's the kind of event the OP had in mind, but that's it for me.

I was a Junior in high school when 9/11 happened.
I don't know if I'd go as far as to say I remember where I sat, but I remember what class I was in and what we were doing.
We were reading the short story "Young Goodman Brown" aloud in class. We finished up early and the teacher decided to turn on the TV for a few minutes before the period was over and there it was.
I guess it was kind of ironic because "Young Goodman Brown" is about losing one's faith and innocence.
Beyond that, Columbine happened when I was in Jr. High, but I don't recall the specific details about where I was or what I was doing. Though I know there was a big pushback against goth, trench coats, and video games.

PanAm 103. We'd just broken up for the Christmas holiday; maybe it's because it happened in Scotland but it was all we could talk about.

Big things I remember happening in Canada in High School (Grades 8 - 12) First Quebec Referendum Trudeau Sr was not Prime Minister for 9 months or so. Joe Clark and the PC had a minority govt until they were taken down by a non-confidence vote. Our Social Studies teacher amused himself during that time by randomly asking us the name of our prime minister. As Trudeau had been PM our entire school lives, most of us didn't remember to say Clark until it was no longer true The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was signed into law. I still have a copy with my other high school memories. I remember watching it on TV but I can't remember if that was at school or at home. Edmonton Oilers, Wayne Gretzky and Calgary Flames - I was a page at the Public Library. One of the Librarians said her husband thought we should change dollars to Gretzkies. He would have probably found backers for that plan. Terry Fox - you either know why this is a big deal or you don't. If you don't, it can be hard to explain. A bit of trivia, Terry Fox and Rick Hansen were in a marathon in PG before Terry started his Marathon of Hope so some people here caught on to him sooner than others. It was illegal to import Krugerrands to Canada due to sanctions against South Africa (relevant to a friend's family)

Big things in other countries Meetings at Camp David between Carter, Sadat and Begin. Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin signing a Peace Treaty between Israel and Egypt. Sadat being assassinated.
Idi Amin went into exile
The Iran Revolution. The Shah went into exile and died of cancer. The staff of the American Embassy was held hostage. Carter lost votes between soldiers died in a failed rescue attempt.
The Iran/Iraq war - Saddam seemed to be given the "good guy" role in that conflict
The Soviet Invasion of Afhanistan. Leading up to the boycotting of the Olympic Games in Moscow. I had been in Moscow as part of a school trip in April 2010. I was sad for the people of Moscow I had met that were really excited about the games.
Falkland Island War. Prince Andrew being an active member of the Royal Navy and actually there.
IRA murdering Lord Mountbatten, his grandchild and some friends. Hunger strikes in British prisons because of the lack of due process related to the troubles in Ireland.
Mount St Helen's
Lennon, Reagan and the Pope being shot. I had gone home for lunch and saw on the news that Reagan had been shot. It was a topic of conversation at school that afternoon. Reagan was not well-liked so no one was surprised that he had been shot.

Challenger blew up. I recall not caring very much. I didn't see how it related to me.
I was a total selfish aashole until....oh, I don't know, I will let you know if that changes. But at least now, I'm self aware.

I don't remember ever having a grade school or High School day interrupted by "news". I remember hearing about the "news" maybe a day or two after it occurred and more or less just as "news" not a stunning emotional stop in your tracks group 'feeling' thing. I don't remember talking about big stuff at school with friends either.
I do remember the crash of American Airlines Flight 191 in 1979 while I was in HS. My brother (a newly minted Fireman in a near by Chicago suburb) was on duty that day and went to the disaster site as back up/help... so there was some 'worry' at home and then just the emotional fall out when he came home from 'work'.

Ooh, finally remembered a big news event from HS, but it was local. There was a huge industrial fire, and a propane explosion killed 7 city firefighters. One of the firefighters killed was a classmate's father. I think it occurred on Christmas eve, or something like that, so we weren't in school when it occurred, and with the holiday break it was a while before we were back together again (private city school that drew from multiple towns around the region).
