The HP series makes a good teaching aid for WWII, if you want to explain to students how Nazism can rise in a 'civilized' society.
The power of the media, especially in propaganda campaigns, is covered well.
I am currently rereading the series for the umpteenth time, and am on Book 5, which is probably my least favorite book in the whole series, but also the funniest.

If you want to be the Cool Uncle, you'll call it "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"... Both my boys and I read that series. We enjoyed them all and were also big fans of the movies. That's rare and a great surprise; usually the movies made from books aren't enjoyable if you're familiar with and like the books. Philosopher's Stone was the original title, Sorcerer's Stone is the Americanized version of the title. I had an involved discussion with my niece about Dobby's love for socks, my cool points ranking is secure.

Dobby doesn't love socks, he loves what socks represent.

I disagree, I think he loves them because of the different colors.

I like OOTP but they are all 15 and whiney and fighting all the time. Their tempers are terrible in that one.
I'm on HBP right now.
Dobby loves socks because Harry freed him by using a pair of socks.

Harry's constant yelling in OOTP was a beating. I know Rowling was trying to reflect the fact that 15 year olds go through hormonal changes, but I thought she overdid it a little. Also, the 'weapon' Voldemort was pursuing was a total letdown. After Goblet of Fire, I thought OOTP was a letdown. Rowling had written on a deadline for the first four books, and OOTP was the first one where she didn't have a deadline, and I thought she dropped the ball. However, HBP is excellent, and Deathly Hallows might be the best all-around book in the whole series. Have you seen the trailer for the fan film coming out?

I loooove Harry Potter. There is a passage in the Thirteenth Tale, a great modern gothic novel, where the narrator is talking about reading a new author and what she says describes me with Harry Potter.
