Four males ranging in age from 15 to 18, Hispanic and black, multiple priors for all. They got two and know who the other two are. The minors will again be prosecuted as juvies with no real consequence. They pried off multiple screens in an attempt to find an unlocked window but all were locked so they broke one. Took two laptops, two high-end cameras, Kindle, etc. Flat screen tv too big to carry. Two laptops were recovered. Victim works 10 hour days so, yes, leaves at 6 home at 7. Victim will be entering a victim's statement at both juvie and adult proceedings in an attempt to get tougher sentences. That's unlikely to work, but it will certainly make her feel better. Another neighbor now says she's seen them hanging out near here early a.m. and late p.m. but of course never, ever, alerted cops or security. Hope she's their next victim when they get out of jail Wow, that's harsh.
When we got burglarized in Germany our next door neighbors saw someone sitting on our front steps. In hindsight they realized that person was probably a look-out.
I certainly didn't blame them or wish evil on them. Often I think we are too wrapped up in our lives to think about why something didn't look right or seemed out of place.
Someone once walked right onto my grandmother's porch and stole my dad's snow shovel. I saw the guy on my grandmother's porch but since I was across the street and it was dark I thought it was my dad. Nope, my dad had been in the basement.

I'm also not quite as aghast at neighbor #1s actions as others might be. Some of that is probably because I'm coming in after we've established that this was not neighbor #1 hiring some kids to break in as revenge or anything. It's not as if neighbor #1 was watching people smashing windows and hauling out TVs. They saw bikes in a driveway and an open gate. They also didn't just ignore it, they called another neighbor that they knew would be home. It seems completely reasonable/plausible to me that someone sees this as they're heading out to work, notices it but doesn't say "oh their home was being burglarized but I'll ignore it". It sticks in their head for a bit and since they can no longer check it out themselves and may not be sure of the details of what they say, they call another neighbor who they know is home and goes out to say "hey, this looked weird to me, I know you're around, maybe see if it looks weird to you".
Similar things have happened around here. My wife left for work and noticed a random car parked haphazardly in a neighboring house's carport (one being renovated by a friend, not occupied). She called me about two hours later telling me she thought it was weird the more she thought about it (given the time of day, the unrecognizable car, etc). I walked outside to go check it out, and the neighbor's house was on fire and burning up pretty badly. Fire and police were already on the scene. When I told the officer what my wife had seen, my first thought was "drunk guy knows it's empty, builds a fire or something in the living room and burns the place down accidentally". Turns out the car belonged to a person the owner hired, he'd just gotten there super early and started work...they turned on the electricity to the building about an hour later and some short-circuit in the attic had burned up the roof. Totally legit reason for the car being there, but it could have just as easily been something criminal. It's a LOT easier to take the "clues" after you know exactly what happened and say "you should have known".
IMO neighbor #1 showed they at least did care in that they called another neighbor after something seemingly didn't sit right with them.
If it hadn't been for all the bashing of neighbor #1 already in the OP, I don't think people would be reading it in quite the sinister way they are now.

I don't get how the neighbor was concerned enough about the bikes in the driveway and the gate open to alert another neighbor, but wasn't concerned enough to stick around and guard her OWN property? If I had even a thought something hinky might be happening at my neighbor's, and even if I was the kind of person who didn't want to get involved, for whatever reasons, I would certainly be worried that they would see me leave and then break into my property. Seems pretty nonchalant to tell another neighbor that her neighbor might be getting robbed and just go off to work.
Which is why I would think the neighbor saw the bikes and open gate and at first didn't think anything of it, but then started to wonder if she should have called it in. Not that she had anything to do with it. We've been having a lot of problems in our community where any cars with the doors unlocked are getting robbed in their driveways. Happened to us once, and never left the door unlocked again...

Seems pretty nonchalant to tell another neighbor that her neighbor might be getting robbed and just go off to work. You see it, think nothing of it...then start to think about it being "off" as time goes by. Then you start to wonder if it really was off, or if you're putting too much into what you think you saw. So you call another neighbor who you know is around.
Your logic is exactly why I think it's probably more likely to be "the more I thought about it, the odder it seemed" than "I saw my neighbor getting burglarized and just drove off"...you'd be worried they'd be hitting you next if you'd just known it was a burglary in progress when you saw it.
They didn't call the other neighbor immediately, sounds like they called them after some period of time had elapsed, which is what signals to me that they thought about it more and it stuck out as being something odd.

I don't have a problem with people calling the police if they see something or someone who doesn't belong or is acting odd. You'd be surprised at how certain neighborhoods get a reputation for being unfriendly to strangers and those neighborhoods stay safe. I lived in one up north and two neighborhoods on the same street had numerous breakins. Not us. I remember walking outside and writing down a license plate number and description of a car and people inside. High end car and lovely couple. They quickly left. A few days later another house in one of those neighborhoods was robbed again. Someone remembers a well dressed couple in a nice white SUV. I had the rest of the info which I turned over to the police along with the description. Bingo!!

Thank you for this post and your other one. Until you posted, it did not make sense to me that she would call someone after she went to work.

Sounds like Neighbor #1 is a raging jackass. Karma usually takes care of people like that. I wish it did but it doesn't.

When the neighbor was doing a major remodel, not living in the house someone was in that house at 9pm, I went over asked them what they were doing there.
Turns out it was an employee of the electrician, I think he was stealing electrical until I confronted him!
I told the home owner the next morning.

If people reported everyone they saw hanging out, or doing things at odd hours, I would constantly get reported. Not because I'm doing anything illegal, but because I tend to do things at night when I can't sleep.
Funny story: One evening I was in my garage (door open) cleaning my car. 2 friends were hanging out chatting with me. One of the guys made a comment about a lot of cops driving through our parking lot that night and he joked about them looking for me. I disregarded his comment. Then he said something about the cops were back and that they really were looking for me. I looked up just in time to see an officer stop outside my garage. The funny thing about it was that they were looking for the guy who kept saying they were looking for me. OOPS!
Problems between neighbors is never fun. Usually a lot of drama. Sorry you've had to deal with this, as well as all the mess after your neighbor was broken in to, @donethat. But it was nice of you.

I love my world but sometimes it's tough to live into it. 43 year old man dead in the 'hood Saturday when he was ambushed by robbers in his driveway at 9 p.m. I often come home from meetings at 9 p.m. My area is better than many more affluent parts of town 'cause less you got is less they get. I'm not being flippant but this has been a lousy couple of weeks around here. I heard there was a big enforcement effort going on at some neighboring apartment complexes which is sort of like pest control - you spray here and the roaches go there. Seriously, the usual easy pickings are the apartment parking lots but with that source eliminated they are headed to our homes.
