This is a shocker! All the same policies, except Obama lied about them... open.salon.com/blog/garybaumgarten/2011/03/24/obama_approves_erosion_of_miranda_rightsIt’s the kind of thing that would result in an uproar from the left if a Republican president had done it. The Wall Street Journal reports that President Obama has authorized delaying the reading of Miranda rights when questioning domestic terrorism suspects. It’s the kind of disappointing move that continues and expands on policies started by the George W. Bush administration that eroded civil liberties in the name of homeland security. It also shows that the differences in this arena between the former and current administrations is minimal. The Guantanamo Bay detention center remains open, for example. Warrantless wiretapping of international calls with suspected terrorists continues as well. (Warrantless wiretapping is being challenged in federal court.) Both were hot issues when Bush was president. But the left has been relatively quiet about them now that Obama is in the Oval Office. I found interesting the remarks by some on the left, critical of Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, a Democrat, for suggesting that the invasion of Libya was an impeachable offense. Doesn’t he know, asked one of my Facebook friends, that he is aiding the enemy (the GOP)? That’s the problem with partisan politics. All-too-often, party comes first. If the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were worth marching against during the Bush administration, why aren’t there massive demonstrations now? Obama promised change. He promised to get us out of Iraq. He is, but on the timetable written up by Bush. No change there. He promised to close Gitmo. No change there either. Now he’s telling investigators that they can hold domestic terrorism suspects longer before reading them their rights against self-incrimination. Perhaps that’s not troubling to some. But I suspect that many who do find it disturbing and who would loudly complain if it were Bush issuing the order will - remain silent.

What's rather bizarre is: If Obama's presidency is just like Bush's, then why are so many conservatives raising 5 kinds of hell over what Obama does? Shouldn't they be patting the man on the back?

I would pat him on the back! But I got this thing about saying one thing and doing another. It's called accountability.

I am not a conservative and had mixed feelings about Obama's handling of the Libyan conflict and thought at first he flipped flopped or was not providing any leadership...but on further thought and discussions with other old retired military I think Obama is trying to downplay the Libyan Conflict and if we are out of there tomorrow then maybe the way he handled the Libyan conflict will be seen as a job well done.. We really should not be getting too involved in Muslim countries but humanitarian efforts ?? Possibly But NOT military, no way no how...IMHO

That's the thing, a lot of real conservatives were disgusted with a lot of Bush's policies, too...for example, Bush spent money like a drunken liberal and authorized surveillance policies that should make any conservative shiver...

Obama may have lied, but he has a much better speaking voice and grasp of the language!

Many of us didn't like Bush policies either and we didn't hide that fact just because he is a republican. You can bash Bush all you want , he deserves much of it IMHO.

Who was patting Bush on the back? We struggled to understand his policies and we had very little success. His policies on terrorism and border security were awful and he didn't explain his reasoning or seek the approval of the American people. I remember posters on this board stretching their intellects mightily trying to wrap their minds around Bush's actions. Even after reading his book I don't understand a lot of what he did. And now Obama can't seem to find his way out of Bush's foot prints. As for 5 kinds of hell Obama has it EASY compared to what the left did to Bush. Good thing too, because he's not as tough as Bush.
