Chris Christie has the courage to be honest, and he has demonstrated that ordinary people may not like the truth, but they appreciate honesty- even when it's not what they want to hear.
Oh, sure- theres a handful of old-line government apparachics- dead enders- who don't see that the party is over, but for the most part people understand the changes that are required- especially those of us paying for the party, and the cleanup.
Last night in Trenton, New Jersey, Chris Christie appeared on the radio, Ask the Governor show, and he spoke with a caller Penny in Blackwood. The exchange was unusual in politics. There was no equivocation, no attempt to treat the woman like an idiot- though it is sad that Christie has to explain to an adult, ostensibly an adult that performs some useful service for the taxpayers, economics 101...anyway, here's the exchange:
Did you get that?
[glow=red,2,300]your neighbor who works in the private sector pays a heck of a lot more for his or her health insurance than you do. And on the top of it they're paying the taxes to pay for your health insurance.[/glow]

It's sad that we have to continually say the same thing to the "adults" here on these boards. What part of " we're broke" do people have a problem understanding?

My feeling is, negotiate for the best deal you can,and if you don't like it,go elsewhere. Most private sector employees pay 20 percent of their premiums,I believe. It is not unreasonable for public sector to. But I also would hate to see the teaching profession become a low paying job.

It is not unreasonable for public sector to. But I also would hate to see the teaching profession become a low paying job. We pay 100% of ours, and we insure 4 employees. IL raised our taxes, and fortunately for our employees (who are stuck in IL paying more taxes) they did it on our way out the door. We are now headquartered in Delray Beach, FL. This is another thing that the dead-enders don't seem to understand: You can't raise taxes on those best positioned to re-locate. $70 billion in wealth has fled NJ. Who knows how much wealth has fled IL? The bottom line is that IL did NOT raise my taxes. They went from getting something from me, to getting nothing from me. I wasn't going to stay anyway because I hate winter, and you can't legislate that-- but the tax and regulatory environment definitely helped push us out the door. Then you take a look at states that have screwed themselves- and you can say that Florida is messed up-- it is. But there are two things to look at: Where we are, and where we are headed. Florida went from a moderate, kinda purple swing state to dark red. We went from the likes of Bush and Crist to Scott. The state went from having two liberals to choose from for Senate to a TEA Party conservative who didn't get a thrid of the vote plus half a percent, but who blew up the two liberals and won in a landslide. The state house is blood red, too. Then you look at IL. Anyone with any common sense has moved. As a result, the state is bluer than ever, raising taxes-- in maybe ten years, but certainly in 20, Chicago will be envious of Detroit.

Part of the problem with the govt saying "I'm broke", is that saying that doesn't mean much anymore to most of us as we have very little confidence in the govt's ability to cut spending. So, I am to the point of why should someone agree to cut their benefits when we know the govt is simply going to turn around and fritter it away somewhere else? I really don't blame people for not agreeing to paycuts. So, let's start from the top down. Let's see these Repo legislators cut their own house, cut the immediate things around them and then branch out. THEN, if I was a govt worker, then i would be willing to hop on the cut spending train. But, in reality, if they cut over here, they will just line someone else's pocket or engage in some new idiotic spending, etc so why shoot yourself in the foot? Honestly, I am sick of promises. I am glad to see someone willing to start making cuts, but I am also very cynical as i have heard it for years. And, if he cuts fairly and across the board, i will bite, but i am not going to see them living the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous and then whine that Suzie Teacher or Joe Prison Guard is making "too much". The government is just like a company (except it consumes and takes instead of producing) it's biggest expense right now is labor, and the pension promises they made. Those of us who pay have instructed our representatives to trim it back. That's why agree, or not-- we are getting OUR way for a change.

Who pays for Christie's health care?
I mean, do representatives generally pay anything for their plans?

Its the principal of the thing paul... if you want other people to pay 13% of their wage to health care.. you should be willing to do it too... and i'm not just talking him... any representative should have to take the same deal they want to give other government workers...

CHRISTIE: Penny, the top 1% of taxpayers in this state pay 41% of the total income tax. The top 1% pay 41% of the income tax. So to say that the rich don't pay is just not true. How much do you want them to pay? There comes a point where you cannot have everything that you want
This was posted at 7:03 AM this morning? Not one liberal has come here saying that the rich don't pay enough? That 41% of their pay is just peanuts to them? Nobody is going to say that the rich won't move out of state rather than keep paying escalating taxes (they will just keep paying because they are rich & should pay)? Not even one statement about how those poor people can't afford as much as they want?
I may go into shock!!!

PENNY: "I would like to know why you want to take at least 13% out of state employees' pay for health care. Between what my husband and I make, you're talking about $600 a month out of our money which is gonna cut into our food and our other bills
Oh I get it.....13% of pay equaling $600 makes these people the targeted "rich" doesn't it? Now I get it.

Hope you like Florida, Paul, but it's about time these highly taxed Dem states stop paying for those deadbeat "independant" sun belt red states.

I'm a resident of New Jersey and I applaud the efforts of our Governor to reduce the total tax burden on us. He is a straight talker and tells it like it is.
Every effort he makes is being fought by the Teacher's Union, the state workers, the State House of Reps and the State Senate. The upside is it is increasingly clear to the residents that his approach is actually doing some good and is slowing making progress.
The overall effort is very complicated but it is being done in a very smart way. He is not just passing costs from the State to the Communities.

#14 It's just too obvious. The rich should pay more.and thank the country. When they don't (1920's, 2000's), everything goes to HELL. The average 10 year old in Germany wants to be a teacher, here a Wall St. Banker...fact! TY Ronnie Raygun and "Greed is Good"

"That 41% of their pay is just peanuts to them?" It isn't 41% of their pay... its 41% of the taxes... and last year it was actually 38% of the federal income tax... at the same time the top 1% also MADE 20% off all the money... so they aren't doing all that bad... (and their average tax rate was 23%) www.taxfoundation.org/news/show/250.html

Not only does it have no value, it doesn't even make any sense. Try to think about what you want to post and review the message to ensure it makes sense. What the heck does #24 mean?
