Trying to make money off your friends (Rant)

I basically detest when people try and sell me something on facebook... especially any of these oils, diet products, leggings etc. if you want to sell stuff, set up a business page and I will follow it if i am interested. 

I mean, if someone is moving and has a sofa or something significant to sell, that's fine. but trying to sell random crap that is doesn't really have much value is a no go.

This is why I really don't do FB.  I just follow my kids and DH (and work).  That's it, and enough.  So I see quidditch team pix, anime memes, viola jokes, Hawaii pix, FireWire video, and hiking links.  

I never post, except for work;  with the PR campaign starting soon, suddenly I've got to heavily ramp up my media blitz, and it rubs against my (personal) grain.  Do we really want to be throwing our branch/system in with this kind of stuff?

Yes. If I had young kids now I'd be thrilled if my library was on FB letting me know when the summer reading starts. I missed it a couple (or more) years with the youngest and just didn't care to try to catch up or see if he could sign up late. Sometimes it was mostly over anyway. I'd love to know about holiday closings and all the book sales ahead of time. Ours will take 2 days for some holidays so it sure would be handy for me.

The restaurants that post lunch specials are more likely to get my business because i know that the specials are.

I am more likely to attend events i see posted on FB.

This weekend I ran across a GoFundMe request posted to FB from two former employees of my non-profit agency. They were asking for $5,000 to buy a new (used) car because both of their cars died. Oh - and glasses for the husband, because he's been out of work for almost 6 months. It was a very lengthy sob story.

What they neglected to tell the world is that he can't find a job because he was caught stealing money from the agency (and I hear through the grapevine he's gotten caught stealing from a subsequent employer). She doesn't work at all for the same reason - she stole about 4x more than he did. Between them they took almost $21,000 over the course of about a year and a half. They were stealing the SSI funds of our clients (!!!!!) to fund their wedding! They also now have a toddler.

I didn't/couldn't respond at all because I was a part of the management team that made the decision to prosecute, and the settlement included non-disclosure by the involved parties (he avoided prosecution by apologizing and paying it back; she initially refused and we went forward with prosecution. She never apologized to the agency OR to the program participant she used to carry out her scheme; someone in her family wrote a large check to us to get the matter dropped, and she did - VERY reluctantly - write a letter to the judge exonerating the program member she used/tried to frame).

However - after about 12 hours someone with correct info (who was not involved in the settlement) blew them up on FB with all the sordid details. The disgust splayed all over the comments is quite telling. Several people have demanded their money back. So much for trying to make money off your "friends."

GoFundMe karma is a b*tch sometimes.

Sorry I wasn't clear - normally posting events, new books/dvds, and things like weather closings IS 95% of what I put on library FB.  The PR person running a seminar to help us promote this wants us to use our personal FB to "like" everything I post on the library page.  We are down to 3 staff members, people know us by name, it looks stupid IMO to "like" my own posts just to pump up numbers!  

On the one hand, the PR pro tells us not to overdo it and post too often, no more than 2-3 per day.  Then they give us a spreadsheet with up to 3 prewritten posts daily to schedule for the next three weeks.  I've got a backload of new arrivals and events to post, and am trying to space them out as it is.  Keep getting new banners and other images to update, too.  I changed one more than once; they kept changing the file.  Also have a new director, who's posting, too.  Our feed looks crazy now.

That makes more sense. And your PR person needs to like them on your behalf.
