To me they're interchangeable. A bean is a bean, it's all about how you flavor them. well, except Black Beans for me - not my favorite except maybe with yellow rice.

I fell so dumb...what is sprouting? I cooked dried beans all the time. My favorite thing to make is chipotle black bean burgers. I also make burgers from the white northern beans. I started buying the bags long ago because the cans are so heavy. I make the burgers on the weekend, and it makes for easy and quick dinner during the week. Sprouting beans makes them easier to digest and makes their full nutritional value more accessible.

I soak the beans overnight, cook them until tender the next day, then make these: Not Refried BeansA shout out to Chocolate Lover for the tip. Added: They freeze well, too. I have these in the crock pot now. I didn't presoak like I normally do, because recipe didn't call for it and I didn't re-read the thread first. But, hopefully it won't matter!

I find simply cooking them in the Crock Pot doesn't cook them all the way; that they stay too al dente for my taste. This is why I pre-soak, then cook them on the stove instead.

That figures...
I'll see how they do, and if they're too hard, I'll move them to the pressure cooker to finish. And I'll remember better next time!

I soak, then crock pot, but back in my non soaking days, I never had undercooked beans. Hope they came out good!

We really like the flavor (added a bit of bacon grease), but they definitely didn't cook in the time listed. I'll either soak and boil them first next time, or use the same ingredients and try the pressure cooker. I have more ingredients, so will probably make more to freeze this week.

Apple, glad you like the flavor! I should note I don't use the jalapeno because I don't usually have them lying around. I do use onion and garlic powders, cumin, cayenne, chili powder and the s&p, however. The onion powder is bc DH doesn't like onions.

I will only eat onions if they are cooked through really well, and cut really small. I've only really started using onions instead of onion powder because DS really likes them. So, now they are a staple. I'll need to make sure to freeze more peppers this summer. They won't be jalapenos, because my parents don't grow spicy peppers, but they'll be good for the flavor.

I parboiled my beans first. Put the hocks in the pressure cooker to release flavor, next time will get a ham bone, just puts in more flavor.
I milled popcorn for cornmeal and made cornbread from the fresh milled, its awesome.
