I don't think I posted here, but there was a stray running around by our house. We called a bunch of shelters and they all said they couldn't take him and to call animal control. They came out and didn't find a microchip. They said they didn't have room for him so we could either keep him or they would put us on a list to come get him when they had room. Well, since I'm a sucker, we're keeping him.
He's a tiny dog compared to my horses. He looks like a wheaten terrier. His name is now Toby. We've been trying to get him to a groomer since he's a little matted from being outside for at least the week I'd seen him running around. I'll be sure to post a pic once he's all shiny. He's the sweetest baby ever. He and Jackson get along fabulously. Jackson gets along with everyone. Macy on the other hand is a different story. She wasted no time letting him know she's the pack leader. He hasn't quite fallen in line, but he's getting there. T1 keeps trying to limit their time together, but I told her that's the only way they're going to figure it out and to just leave them alone other than making sure nobody gets hurt. Macy couldn't actually hurt anyone, she's just a little scary sometimes.

I think my dog buddy senses something has gone awry in her space-time continuum (we are now operating under stay-at-home status). She seems a little more anxious than usual and a tad clingy (but still sweet and precious). Of course, as a dog, she is fairly easily cheered up by treats and someone to throw a ball for her to chase. And tummy rubs. And squirrels. She remains the sworn enemy of all squirrels.

Bill got in a good run yesterday, he was so tired that he didn’t even stand up to drink. They’re going to be sad when the “stay at home” order is lifted.

Cute.
Warning - not happy dog story, posting it here instead of a general thread because dog people will get it.
Just finished watching Judge Judy. This woman was in court to recover money from her biological daughter. When Judge Judy finally extracted the basic story from the woman, it turned out she did a couple IMO very stupid things and wanted to blame her biological daughter for it going south instead of realizing she set up the situation for failure. This 36 year old woman had a pre-planned trip with her husband yet chose to get a pug puppy before she went on this vacation for 10 days. The couple, no kids together, had another dog in the house, a year and a half old Golden, roughly about 60lbs. per Judge Judy's estimate. The pug puppy was 8 weeks old and according to my internet research roughly 2 to 4 lbs. This woman said the puppy had been introduced to the Golden once and played peacefully with the puppy when her and her husband were there.
So they get the puppy right before they leave on vacation and she asks her biological daughter to dog sit both dogs. ( Backstory, daughter was given up for adoption and bio Mom has only had her in her life recently and for a short time.) Short version daughter and male friend let dogs out to play in the room while they watch TV. Puppy dies after a bite on the head from the Golden. Woman asks for damages that are almost all costs associated with asking her daughter to move in with her and the lost hotel costs for coming home early. Her closing on the show is anger for her daughter not apologizing for the death of the puppy and saying she plans to have no further contact with bio daughter. Judge Judy dismissed all her damages and money she was asking for.
My question to posters on this blog is, do you really have to be a dog person to see that 1) getting a puppy when you are going to be away for more than a week is a bad idea and 2) that getting a really small puppy when you basically currently own a really large puppy is a horrible possibly deadly idea? (When I used to watch puppies in pet stores it was a pretty common thing to watch them bite each other including the head.)

To answer your first question, yes.
As far as the second, big dogs and little dogs can coexist just fine. You have to monitor your animals at any size and age. They're just like children in that respect. They have to build up trust in order to be left alone and for what length of time. You can't expect that an addition that new could be left alone with an existing pet for any length of time regardless of size.

I agree small and big dogs can coexist, but you need a smarter owner than the one who showed up in court. She apparently didn't even tell bio daughter to only let them play together for brief periods and only when she could devote her attention to watching their interaction.

I can't sleep. It hasn't been a good night. The 4 girls all decided to disobey DH and ran off up a hill that has a road at the top. Our white shepherd, Missy, was hit by a car. We had to put her down. We couldn't even go in with her because of the social distancing rules. She had to go to die in with a stranger.
Her half sister, our black shepherd Molly is missing. DH just gets mad when I try to find out what happened. I finally know the man who hit Missy stopped and he feels really bad. DH told him it wasn't his fault. It was DH's for trusting the dogs near there and Missy's for not stopping when DH called her back.
I don't know if Missy was hit also or DH scared her or if she just kept after whatever the 4 of them thought they were chasing. When Molly went missing in the area last year, she was found 5 kms away or so. I'm just trying not to think about coyotes and hungry bears. But it isn't working.
DH is mad at the other dogs and they aren't sure why. He is threatening to give Stevie, Molly's sister away. Lexie doesn't seem too upset that 2 of her daughters are missing.
Too top it all off, I think I must have put my purse on DD's trunk when I went back to close the front door when we were going to get the other dogs because its gone. I was able to cancel all the cards but that's not the important stuff. I had a drive with DD's last dance competition in my purse and a bunch of pictures from the competitions last year.

I'm so sorry. I can't imagine. I'm awake too, but only because Jackson won't shut up. I'll hug him instead of yelling at him now. You've had a horrible night. I wish I knew what to say to make it better. Just know that she was loved and I'm hoping Molly comes back unharmed soon. Hugs.

My husband snuck out when I was getting ready for work. He found Molly. He is still mad at all of the girls for not listening to him which lead to Missy’s death and a poor man being guilt ridden.
I’m hugging everyone before I go in case I never see them again

I'm worried about Macy. She just got a hold of Bear. He has been here all weekend and I don't know what he even did other than get too close to me. All of a sudden there was all this barking and teeth. The only reason he didn't get hurt was because he laid there and screamed while she bit him. That and the I was laying on the couch right in front of them when it went down. I jumped up and pulled her off of him.
She got Jackson a couple of weeks ago and I had to have help breaking that up. I was in the other room when that happened and Jackson got hurt because he didn't back down. I don't know what to do with her. What if I hadn't been home when she started the fight with Jackson? Would he have been seriously hurt? I don't want to think about rehoming her, but she's starting to prove that she can't be trusted. I'm not going to have an aggressive dog in my house, but she's really a sweet girl. Maybe I need to call the vet and see what he thinks.

Sorry to read this Andi. Maybe Macy is just one of those dogs that needs to be in a single dog, single pet situation. If that's the case, don't feel guilty about re-homing her. It will be better for her and you.

Maybe, but I've had her for 3 years. Why all of a sudden is she acting this way? There has to be something wrong. She's always been a dominant dog, but not aggressive. I want to have the vet look at her before I do anything.

Longer than Macy. We got Jackson in September 2016. Then Bear in December of 2016. Then Macy in March of 2017. They've all been together for a long time. Bear lives here on and off since he's T1's dog and often spends the night or weekend if T1 is going to be gone or busy.

I'd highly recommend you working on your dominant position over the pack (I have a lot of past experience with dobermans and they are great dogs but super smart and very pack position oriented). She needs to down-stay before being fed and her bowel should only be down for 10 minutes to eat (they all should do this). She needs to be fed in the middle, not her bowel put down first before the others. Only one dog gets on the coach at a time and no one can get up unless you say. Make sure they all get a turn. Down-stay her throughout the day for a few minutes but don't pet the other dog when you do this. Do ignore her though. Then let her up and praise her. From your posts about her, she appears to have a dominant personality, which you identify with and enjoy (and there is nothing wrong with this, I love those kinds of dogs as well). She can read your body language and knows this however! Which makes her more dominate to the other dogs. Which leads to this aggressive behavior which will escalate. So you'll need to always reinforce your dominant position with her but always without force or violence. In natural doggie ways.

I'm going to reach out to a local dog trainer. His slogan is that he trains people and not dogs. He's supposed to be the best, but expensive. I'd rather pay the money than have any of the dogs get hurt or have to rehome her. I love her, but I will not put the other dogs in danger.

I think that's a very wise choice! Besides, how would rehoming Macy help? 'Yes, I'm rehoming my doberman mix. She will fight other dogs and can be aggressive.' You know full where she would be likely to end up and it would be terrible for her. A good trainer is worth the money and should be able to help faster (and less in the long run possibly). I support your choice. 😁 I think this will help you and her relationship as well.

And she's not a dog for just anyone. She needs a certain kind of owner. I'm not letting her get to the point where she can't be around them anymore.
