Yeah, it's a pain. I've got a permanent grudge against Home Depot because when I wanted to tile a couple of bathroom floors a year ago we went to HD, sat there for over half an hour while the employee poked through menus and filled in the blanks with our details, then we paid them $50 to have someone actually come out and look at the place and provide a quote. They eventually called with the quote and threw in the comment that if the existing tile in Bath # 1 had asbestos in it, it would need to be remediated first. The quote looked OK, DH went in to sign the orders, and came back looking as if he'd been through a war. WE had to have the floor tiles tested. No, they couldn't recommend any testing labs and they wouldn't touch it until it was tested.
I did some research and concluded it was unlikely the tile contained asbestos based on the year the house was built (mid-80s) and checking pictures of brands that did contain it. It is also legal to tile over it as long as you don't rip it up and send fibers into the air. That tile was fused to the sub-floor. I did it myself, saved a bundle and bought a pair of ostrich boots with the savings.
But yes, it's a pain no matter what. I stage my DIY jobs so that the room is still usable (well, except for bathroom tiling when we paid someone to take the toilets out and put them back in afterwards) and leave ladders, rags, etc. in place till I'm done. I hate the chaos. Professional jobs always involve in-home consultation, waiting forever for the materials to arrive, then people in the house when it's installed and sometimes a few returns to fix problems. I've tried ordering in-line for in-store pickup at Lowe's and found that half the time they order isn't ready even when they send me an e-mail and say it is. They also won't consolidate orders in one place. If Store A has fewer of your chosen tiles in stock than you need and Store B has the rest, well, you need to go to Store A as well as Store B to get them.
