My wife and I were going over the stock holdings yesterday. She asked me, "how long have you owned this one?" this is one of three I owned before we met. I said, I am not sure. Let me think.
It was a locally operated gas and electric utility. I cannot find my original paperwork, but the certificate is locked in the safe deposit at the bank. After thinking awhile I realized I have owned it since at least, spring of 1969. Started with a hundred shares somewhere around $22 a share. I know I bought another hundred shares after I was out of the service at around $19 a share, and always has it in the drip program. When we built our first house, I sold 100 shares for money for part of the down payment, but over the years have been well rewarded with additional shares.
Today's investors would think someone is crazy for holding on all these years, but the thousands of dollars I am getting in annual dividends dwarf the original investment today.
Just thought I would give a shout out to posters such as wxyz and the investment advice given here! I just wish there were more of us here to talk investment styles.

Stock Dividends/Bond Interest from our taxable account now pays for our:
Home/Auto/Umbrella insurance Cell Phone Water/Sewer/Heating/Electricity
This buy and hold and collect dividends/interest from the comfort of my living room is a pretty awesome gig. I estimate proceeds from our taxable account will cover all of our baseline expenses, rent/food/gasoline as well in 10 years.

wxyz, I think I had bought a couple hundred shares within the first eight years, and sold a couple hundred shares over the years for the original house and down payment on a car one year. Seen a stock split, plus a spin off of a subsidiary, that also paid a decent dividend.
Johnson&Johnson, also a big winner. JCI was a good payer also, plus a stock split. Like you say, buy and forget em, just collect the dividend and re-invest!

I would like to mention the Virginian in this thread also. He has a philosophy of investing for dividends that can pay off handsomely with the right research. I admit this is not for everyone, as you can get burned at times, but with proper management and paying attention to detail, it works fine too. Just have to stay well informed at all times.
