All income for January is in, so here's my update for February. It's going to be a very lean month for us. I had to cut a lot of discretionary spending to add to these categories. Thankfully, we just got a quarter of beef this week as payment from the neighbor for letting him plant corn on our field last year, so that should help the grocery bill. We were buying a lot of hamburger the past few months. As a side note, I don't know why I have car maint and kids activities on here. I spend it as fast as it comes in (kids activities for sure)...it's not really savings. Fund | Goal
| Current | Needed | % Complete
| 2018 Roth
| $5500 | $400 | $5100 | 7.27%
| Pr. High School
| $3800 | $800 | $3000 | 21.05% | Replacement Car
| $3600 | $0 | $3600 | 0.00% | House Maint
| $2600 | $100 | $2500 | 3.85% | College | $2400 | $400 | $2000 | 16.67% | Vacation | $2000 | $0 | $2000 | 0.00% | Kids Activities
| $1000 | $280 | $720 | 28.00% | Car Maint
| $1000 | $150 | $850 | 15.00%
| Christmas | $1000 | $50 | $950 | 5.00% | Philmont | $500 | $50 | $450 | 10.00% | Total | $23,400 | $2,230 | $21,170 | 9.53% |
So your tagline is minnesotapaintlady, $2,230 1/29/17 (goal $$23,400)Sorry to nag about this, but it really helps to have taglines. It speeds up the smilies immensely.

To re-introduce myself... I have enjoyed so much success at planning and executing significant savings here on the Savers thread over the years that I want to be on board for this year, as well. A little about me, I'm a 25-year veteran teacher in the Pacific NorthWet. DH and I are DINKs, with one fur baby, Sisu, a Bernese mountain dog. The only debt that we have is our mortgage. I first started with the Savers to save $1000 for a basic Emergency Fund. Once I got that rose, I raised it to $7,500 (3 months expenses). That's been so long ago that that fund's value is now $20,000! I automatically fund my retirement, investments, and maximize my Roth contributions so I don't track them here. That's why you might notice that my savings categories are mostly "fun" things. Happy Savings to all, new and old friends!

Trimatty471:
My 2017 Goal as of 01/01/2017 is $13,615. This consists of: ROTH $1200 Freedom $5000 Vacation $2000 College $800 Sinking $550 Repairs/Replace $2565 (This is for home and auto) Holiday $1500 My beginning balance is $2,850. This consists of unused monies from 2016 holiday that got swept into vacation and money accumulated in the last quarter of 2016. Balance needed is: $10,765. How? I have automatic savings of $150 per paycheck to fund my goals. This will take care of $3900 at the end of the year. I plan to fund the rest through: deposits, OT, refunds, bonus, swagbucks, Ebates, Ibotta and gifts. I intend to update my progress at the end of every month. (Really. I set an automatic reminder) As of 01/31/17: Balance needed: $8,908.88

I've been following the money boards since they were on MSN - but I never really contributed. Now it's time to make myself accountable and really pay attention to what I'm saving! I credit things like the money boards for helping me deal with finances in a responsible way. I started reading them when I was about 19 and now I'm 27 - no debt except a mortgage and looking to save and invest more! :-) Also, I want to save for things like travel and eventual land/small home. 2017 Savings
| 2017 Goal | Added | 1/28/2017 | % Saved | Roses | Gifts | $ 2,600 | $100 | $200 | 7.7% |
| Travel | $ 2,000 | $60 | $300 | 15.0% |
| EF increase | $ 2,600 | $100 | $200 | 7.7% |
| Weekly Savings | $ 2,078 | $78 | $156 | 7.5% |
| Moving | $ 2,000 | $75 | $150 | 7.5% |
| Sweep Fund | $ 2,600 | $205 | $205 | 7.9% |
| Total | $13,878 | $618 | $1,211 | 8.7% |
|
Seriousthistime, $1,211, 1/28/2017 (Goal $13,878)Finally got some money into the sweep fund (the money left in my checking account before my paycheck is deposited). It's good to see new Savers joining us! Here's a question for the new folks ... what made you decide to join us? Have you been reading for a while, did you just find us, have you been saving all along but just want the extra accountability, or what? It's always interesting to see what brings people here. The first smilie updates will be done around February 3. Please get your updates in by then.

I paid Revenue Canada the $252.67 that I owed to them. Now I wait for February 10th, 2017 to see if everything is alright, or do I have to rake them over the coals.
This was the snafu from Trillium Benefit from last July, they finally got around to fixing it, I hope.

I plan to turtle everything until I can save $10,000. I was going to pay off my CC but I feel like I really need to reach my goal first.
I had to cancel my Puerto Rico trip since only 1 student was going. I will receive a refund of most of my payments.

Really tempted to use the HSA account as the medical bills start rolling in.... so far holding off from using it and paying for everything out of pocket, not an easy feat! One step at a time.... Whelp, time for another non-number monthly update. Our output is STILL more than income every month, but at least we're not going into debt (yet). Still going through what we have/had saved up for unexpected new house stuff. So, still no savings goals. I am SO ready for this darn house to be done; I wasn't anticipating the stress. So far, it's taken twice as long as what our contractor said it would take. Contractors: Still contributing max to retirement accounts, and tax refund and DH's bonus (this month or next) should help. Thank for letting me vent.

megaptera venting is helpful! I know you want to be done yesterday, but the goal must be getting closer and closer. It's helpful for all of us WIR Savers to see that non number updates are important too.

I'll be able to update next week.
I caved in and got a new cell phone and provider last week. I felt like I was at the doctor's office with how much information they wanted. I was completely stressed out and mentally done by the time I was out of the store.
I had been added on to my dad's plan a few years ago so I didn't have to go through the circus until now. But I figure since I am supposed to be a adult I needed to be on my own plan. Also, my needs are different than they used to be. It had been over 15 years since I had a cell but society changes and tech went with it so it is much easier to attempt to go with the times.

Update: Just plugging along.....adding to savings as I can. So far it is looking good, but we are only to the beginning of month 2!! I also put the correct balances for some of the accounts that have had only some change sitting in them on my CapitalOne360 accounts. Not much but all adds up, right? Projecting around $15,000 saved for the year without adding in Facebook sales and hoping for a big garage sale!! We shall see!! Also, have a change jar I am keeping.....cash in later. oops.....I meant to check in this week. I finally figured out what my new paycheck amount will be, and figured out how to weather the short February until tax refund (~$1k) and bonus arrive. this week, I marked off the calendar to do the standard ascending weekly challenge and put $21 in the plastic souvenir cup I've used the past few times to collect. that $21 covers weeks 1-6, which includes next Saturday that I'll be on a boat in the Caribbean. I will pick back up when I get back. so my tagline should say $21, I guess.

sealy, you're really burning up the thread! I am very impressed! Thanks serious I'm just hoping I can keep it and continue to add to it. I know Dave says only to have $1,000 but I have to break this cycle of CC dependance.

Shoutouts Part 1 of 2 (and in no particular order, my general MO) Welcome back 2016 Saver Alumni, and Welcome aboard new WIR Savers minnesotapaintlady Congratulations on $2230 saved, and earning your . Good planning and savings on your part to have a big supply of beef in the freezer. Understandably it doesn't "feel like savings" to have the car maintenance and kids activities categories since that money flows in and out steadily, but it probably helps to have it recorded and monitored. So instead of feeling like "where the heck does the money go", you can say "wow there's where the money goes." Do you have other food/freezer savings strategies you could share with us??
nikiz628 So glad you joined us . Congratulations on having $4123 saved and earning your first Savers . Your goal lineup shows a nice balance of must have (EF), should have (future needs), and want (planning for fun). I think you and the other New Folks are going to love being here. Ditching debt is fun, but even more fun is building your savings, and your savings muscles.
Saving4Norway Welcome back again Thank you for reintroducing yourself. It's helpful for us to see your progression to the point where your WIR Saving categories are primarily fun. Nice work having $5K saved and earning your first 3
finnime It's so nice meeting you. Thanks for sharing how and why you joined the Savers. We are very excited to watch your savings snowball/EF grow from little to SO BIG that you'll wonder how you did it Keep up the good job step by step.
Jaguar Hola WIRSaver Friend! Nice work right out of the gate: $800 saved, your first , and 13.8% means U R right on target
chiver78 Welcome back! Nice work being on target with the Weekly Savings Challenge! Enjoy yourself on the vacay, then hurry back and drop that next $7 in the cup. Ten months will fly by and it will be so fun to have $1378 that could have otherwise slipped through a crack.
seriousthistime Thank you so very much for the smiley update , and for your thoughtful and thought-filled contributions to our Savers Thread. Kudos on having over $1200 saved and branching out with your new "sweep savings". I also like your method of having your major goals as your signature line. Sometimes things can get hectic or confusing, and those guidelines are so helpful.
teachermom Good job transitioning from debt racing into Saver with nearly $2K saved already! I just love giving a teacher a star . You have a good plan laid out for 2017, and beyond. I love watching you turn your plans into accomplishments, knowing that what you learn gets shared with young people to their benefit...And thank you and all the Savers who offered perspective on TheHaitian 's question of using CC's as EF.

I appreciated your input on the TheHaitians question, that was a broader perspective with good examples. azucena An excellent start for you with $2934 more saved toward your dream home! And thank you for sharing about the challenges of "pulling the cart together" when there is a substantial difference in incomes and also the saver/spender challenge. Like you, I have also learned so much here first as a WIR Racer and now as a WIR Saver. It's a journey, and the learning never stops. regecko Howdy and welcome aboard! Wow so awesome you are learning so much, and doing so well at your relatively young age. Congratulations on $8473 saved and earning your first 2 stars and almost your 3rd one too! You are absolutely in the right place. This group is all about sharing and supporting. You seem eager to learn, and as you have seen the Savers are happy to share their knowledge and experiences. sealy Good work with your 1st and second updates....$5000 and then $9700. You have your gazelle intensity! Go sealy go go go Keep working your plan shanendoah Kudos for staying tough during a trying time. Sometimes things happen that we must endure. I am so glad you made the decision to be an official 2017 WIR Saver in spite of that. We don't know which of us may be dealt the next difficulty, thank you for your example of moving forward. How is it February already? I am so far behind in pretty much EVERYTHING so far this year. I was so excited for 2017 to start, since 2016 seemed to be such a difficult year. Too bad 2017 seems just as difficult as 2016 thus far. *sigh* I KNOW this is just a season in our lives, but blankety-blank blank blank! I'd be okay if this "season" was over already.
With all of that being said, I am only now just posting my 2017 goals. We still haven't come close to recovering from 2016's negative impact on our finances. One step, one day at a time, right? In happier news, our miracle baby turned ONE yesterday! She is doing amazingly well, for how rough of a start she had. At this point last year, we weren't even sure if she was going to make it through the day, let alone survive, thrive, and steal ALL the hearts along the way! She's about 16 lbs, so somewhat petite for a 1 year old, but if you consider that she's actually only 9 months (adjusted), she's doing just fine. She's finally mastered sitting on her own and is starting to scooch around on her knees, all within just the last few days.
I have 8 goals for the year - 4 of which I save to on a monthly basis (taxes, insurances, Christmas & random), and 4 of which are filled as I can find extra cash, bonuses, etc. (ER Fund, and then refilling the kids' accounts). For a while, I had been doing pretty well saving a set amount each pay period to the ER Fund, but we're falling behind again due to some unexpected large expenses. So while all the bills are getting paid, we're living closer to the edge again than I would like. I am due for a small raise soon, and between that and our tax refund (I *hope* it's a refund, anyway!), I hope that boosts us back onto (more) solid ground.
Account Name | Goal | Saved | Remaining | % Complete | Taxes | $7,200.00 | $1,200.00 | $6,000.00 | 16.7% | Insurances | $4,560.00 | $760.00 | $3,800.00 | 16.7% | Christmas | $2,000.00 | $0 | $2,000.00 | 0% | Random | $1,000.00 | $0 | $1,000.00 | 0% | ER Fund | $6,790.00 | $1,295.31 | $5,494.69 | 19.1% | DD | $2,200.00 | $650.00 | $1,550.00 | 29.5% | DS | $750.00 | $0 | $750.00 | 0% | DSD | $500.00 | $0 | $500.00 | 0% | Total | $25,000.00 | $3,905.31 | $21,094.69 | 15.6% |
I hope this is a somewhat realistic goal for this year. The ER Fund goal listed above is a nice first step on our way to a multi-year goal of a $25,000 final ER Fund, but for this year, my total goal is $25,000, spread across all categories.
There's a lot going on, but it's so helpful to have this group around to keep me accountable! Again, sorry for the late start this year, but I am:
Tobinikui: $3,905.31 on 2/5/2017 (Goal: $25,000.00)
