Input needed, ladies & gents! I do 100% of the finances for our family, in every way, shape, and form. One of my biggest fears is dying, without my husband being confident on how to manage everything, and being able to carry on a pretty similar standard of living in my absence. He has a self-described "math phobia" and while he is capable, it requires much more mental energy for him, than it does for me. To that end - we have started having monthly family finance meetings after the kids go to bed. Additionally, I am putting together a notebook with all the account information, billing periods, due dates and account access information for life as we know it, now. I will include a section on our life insurance policies & contact information too. We have health care proxies, living wills, pop-up power of attorney documentation, and have everything we need to finalize our wills (just need to find time to do this)! What else should I include? If you (have) had to go through a loved one's estate, what do you wish you would have known, or had easier access to? I think I have a pretty good idea of what to include, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything important. Anything else I could do to bolster DG's confidence, that you can think of? Thoughts? (Thank you!) I've been thinking about a similar effort. One piece I don't see listed is the online addresses and login information for various payees and accounts. I do all of our household bill management online. DH wouldn't be able to go a week without knowing what and how to access, at least to monitor things. I really like what you have organized - I'm going to replicate.

(Thank you!) We do a similar "meeting" every few weeks, so that my husband and I are on the same page (I also handle 100% of the finances). I have all of our account info usernames/pws together so he can access anything in case of an emergency. All of our important documents are in our fireproof safe. We just need to get our wills in place. We keep saying we are going to do it-- and then we don't. It's not something I want to brush off.

tobinikui - Do you have a estate lawyer and wills? I am really thankful that my Dad has a lawyer for when he passes. My Mom - I had to hire one due to her being in another state and it can take up to a year for the finalization of everything. Of course, I am still waiting for the Death Certificates to get things started. Luckily there was a will and I had POA before she passed.

tobinikui - Two years ago when I was having my thyroid removed (and had to go under general anesthesia), I put together a document with all of our bills, how they were paid (auto-debit from checking, auto-debit from cc, check, etc). I included the links to the websites, and our log in information. For our bank accounts, we each have our own log in, but he almost never goes in on his, but I sometimes have to (in order to pull statements from the accounts that he is "primary" on, even though they are all joint account), I included my log in, and his log in, and what the differences were between them. And then I put that document in an envelope, sealed it, and gave it to my best friend and her wife. One, I completely trust these two people with this information, so honestly, I would have given it to them in an unsealed envelope, but they felt better with it being sealed. And two, these are also the two people who would be stepping up to help C with the mundane things like paying the bills while he had to deal with the big picture aspects of finances (life insurance, funeral costs) and the emotional fallout. I know that we are really blessed with the strength of our relationships and what we can count on friends or family to help us with, and I know not everyone has that. But if you do have someone you would trust along those lines, maybe have some very brief conversations with them. Mine had to be a bit more in depth because I was going in for neck surgery and under general anesthesia, which always carries risk, and so that provided the opportunity to have that conversation. But when I update that document (which I do), those friends now get a new sealed envelope, and they give me the old one to shred.

I'll update my numbers on Friday, that's after I pay my bills and send out the CD order for The Monroe Institute.

shanendoah: 6/26/2017 $660 (Goal: $960)
Pulling $1350 out of savings to help cover the just over $1700 in car repairs. This leaves some money in savings for future "emergencies" but also doesn't put off paying down the debt by too much.

regecko, 06/30/2017, $12,231.23, Goal = $12,000.00Saved as of 6/30/17 | Overall Saved: | Goal: | Completed:

I finished my Tiny House goal! I am likely going to re-evaluate to set a higher goal once August rolls around. August is my birthday and when I usually do a budget reset, so although I will continue saving, I won't adjust my goal until I can take a comprehensive look at my budget going forward and re-evaluate. I also suspect that between now and August I will have my annual review, and when that happens I will also need to readjust my budget depending on if I get a raise/how much of a raise I get. June is a 3 paycheck month for me, and I arranged it so that all of my bills came out of the first two checks, so the one I received today is kind of a freebie. I threw $400 to Small Vacations, because I'm taking a girls beach trip at the end of August and want to have a decent cushion. My share of the condo will be about $175, and then there is gas to split, food and alcohol to stock the condo with, and any eating out or other excursions that we do (there are a bunch of outlet stores down there!).

no update from me, still haven't replaced the borrowed funds from my calendar savings, so that is a big fat $0 right now. and, I'm sorry (but kind of proud of myself in a big girl kind of way) to report that I won't be making that lump sum payment to the next balance under attack. at my oil change last week, I was informed that I needed brakes and rotors, but that they could probably save and resurface the rotors. ugh.... so I made another appointment for yesterday, since I couldn't wait that day last week. I picked up the car today, and was told that it was probably better that I waited a week to do it, since I managed to degrade the rotors *just enough* more that it was definitely better to replace everything at the same time. that's just best practice anyway, if there's a question. so, I paid out $852 this morning. not as high as I expected, but still not fun. the old brakes were factory originals at 75k miles. here's hoping I get another 75k miles out of this set! where things get interesting is this - instead of using my debit card to pay this (from that lump sum that's now not getting paid out), I opted to dig out the Citi card that was going to ugly reset in August that I just paid off this spring. I used that card at the dealership, and already have the payment set up in my checking to pay it off next week when the charge finally posts. hopefully, using the card will prompt them to send another transfer offer. that's what I've been told by a couple different CC companies in the past, when I will call to complain that I haven't seen an offer in awhile. they tell me to use the card a little (gas stations, etc) and pay off the balance, that using the card will kick the gears in the system to send out promotional rates. fingers crossed, anyway. at the very least, it's not costing me anything in interest to have done this. it would have come from checking anyway.

We got our first CheckOut51 Rebate! If you don't use Checkout51, it is an App where you get money back when you buy select items, mainly grocery, some health and beauty, medicine, cleaners, etc. All you have to do is scan your receipt and indicate which items you bought and you get anywhere from .25 to $5.00 back usually depending on what it is. It took me a long time to earn the $20.50 since I don't buy based on their list, but my normal groceries, and if something happens to be on there then I upload my receipt. So that was a nice extra $20 for savings.
I also got rent in the mail just now when MO brought the mail in, but I will wait till after the holiday weekend to deposit that so I will have that on the next update. We also have been working on the 52 Week Challenge and we have $819.00 in that bucket. (We have paid weeks 1-27 and 45-52)
Less then a month now till our week long Vegas trip!!!

I cashed out my Variable Universal Life Policy and played a little catchup with my savings goals. It's really just moving the money from an inaccessible account to an accessible account, but I am taking credit for it anyway. This move will save me a few hundred dollars a month. I didn't have one day when I suffered from extreme stress trying to figure out how I was going to pay all of my bills. The bottom line is that my financial position is improved without that policy. As a bonus, I got paid three times in June! Happy Birthday America! -movinonup

bankergurl- I love Checkout51. I also use Ibotta, Mobisave, Yaarlo, Find & Save, and Shopkick (in case you are looking for MORE ways to get paid for shopping!) I also use Receipt Hog and Receipt Pal (points just for taking pics of your receipts- points redeemed for gift cards). You don't have to buy specific items with these apps. All of the $$ I earn from all of these goes into our Disney Fund.

UPDATE:
2017 | START | PRESENT | GOAL | STILL NEED | E.F. | $2,016.87 | $1,341.02 | $3,000.00 | 1,658.98 | ROTH | $0 | $2.88 | $1,000.00 | $997.12 | DS 1 SAVINGS | $1,300.19 | $1,447.61 | $1,500.00 | $52.39 | DS 2 SAVINGS | $278.10 | $400.00 | $400.00 | $0.00 | DISNEY FUND | $200.00 | $937.73 | $2,000.00 | $1,062.27 | TOTALS | $3,795.16 | $4,129.24 | $7,900.00 | $3770.76 |
NikiZ628 7/1/2017 $4,129.24 (Goal $7,900.00 WIRS2&7)2017 is halfway over already! I figure this is a great time for re-evaluation and updates to my goals/budget/etc. Obviously, my EF hasn't rebounded since we had the car issues last month... I hate it, but again, I am still so glad we had it when we needed it. We booked our Disney trip for 2018 this month! I now have a deadline on that savings goal- 45 days prior to the trip. The trip is significantly more than my current goal amount, but I knew that it would be all along. Basically all of the money that I put in this savings fund is FREE money that I earn from various apps and rewards sites, so if I can save $2,000 in free money- I will be ecstatic. I do sometimes put $20 a week in from H's check, but only if we have enough "spare" money to do that. It's budgeted for $20 a week to either Christmas fund or Disney- but sometimes we overspend in groceries, etc. and if that happens, no money to Disney. #adulthoodsuckssometimes DS1's savings should hit goal after his bday in September- we put any $$ he gets into savings, so it's basically coasting until then. Roth- I've mentioned it before, but this fund is kind of a wash until our home renovations wrap up. We just do not have the extra money to allocate at this time. Home projects (not a fund- but an update anyway). Thankfully our home projects are SLOWLY getting closer to being finished. 75% of the addition is complete. We just need to finish the bathroom. DS1s room (that was an existing room) was gutted this week...boy do I hate plaster and lath, what a mess! It's just getting a facelift of drywall, raised ceilings (back to the original height-we ripped out where a previous owner had lowered them), paint, and new carpet to match the other new bedrooms. We already have the carpet and pad, so we just need to buy the drywall, mud, and paint. Cheapest project thus far lol. After that we will finish the new bathroom, redo our old bathroom (converting a full to a half bath/laundry), and then it's on to finish the attic play room. The attic play room is going to be very basic (hopefully that also means inexpensive). Beefing up the joists, floor, walls, paint, insulation, electrical. It's going to be used for a video game area (we have tv and futon) and a place for their overflow toys. I am really excited to have this space to send them to play when friends are here, etc. So, that's where I am thus far. I am going to look at my goals for the year- see how we are doing- and see if any adjustments need made or if anything new needs added. As quickly as its gone, 2017 has been a decent year so far!

For once, I'm going to make the smilies for the month (I hope!). I was able to pay back a bit of the money I borrowed from our sub-accounts thankfully. We still have about $2300 to pay back - ugh, we have really gone over board these last few months, add that on top of the legal fees we've been paying through the nose, and I really need to cut back. I am frustrated that it feels like we live pay check to pay check, even though we do probably have more savings than most people I know. But since those savings are already earmarked for particular items, I'm still waiting for pay checks to come, to pay bills. And, since we spent so much in June, BOTH of my July paychecks are already "gone". That is really an area I need to focus on improving, and paying attention to. Reigning in spending, and saving up a "pay in advance" fund. I'll add that to the to-do list.
Thank you everyone who commented on my question regarding helping make my husband more financially prepared. The notebook is coming along - I still have a few items to add to it, but it will be so helpful to be able to review that with him next week when we sit down again. Regarding account logins and passwords, we have a top-name security product for our computers and it comes with a password manager. I've added everything I can think of to that system, and will print out a hard copy reference version to go in our safe. I also wrote out the answers to many of the security questions I could think of, and will add to both lists over time, as things pop into my mind. I don't think anything will truly prepare a loved one for a spouse's death, but at least this will hopefully ease some of the stress, I hope.
Additionally, I have a few days off work, so I am hoping to finalize our wills, and get them notarized at the local bank, within the next week or two. (To give myself a deadline, I'm aiming for the wills to be 100% done and notarized by Monday, July 17th - wish me luck!) We did the internet version for now - and are very clear about our wishes with our family. We have selected a local firm to be our go-to for the future (although they're not the ones dealing with us for our current legal issue), but they'll cover our estate issues in the future, if necessary.
Hope everyone is enjoying their summers!

Good job, Savers! We've got more stars in the night sky and our rose garden is blooming like crazy! We even have another frisky banana.

Hello ladies! I see a lot of familiar names and lots of $$ saved and smiley faces to accompany those numbers! I have been so out of touch for over a year and I apologize.
Quick update on me: after my dad passed away in December 2015, my brother and I started getting the house ready to sell (which was when I dropped out of the board scene). We ended up selling it in July last year and I bought a villa and moved in August. I'm still not totally settled in my new place and it fells a little weird being a homeowner but it'll come together in its own time. I have been getting classes done as prerequisites for a physician assistant program and am getting ready to apply...hopefully for admission in June. All the money that I saved from my dad's estate will be going toward school if I get in. Hopefully any loans I need to take will be small. If I don't get in, that money will be used to do some changes to my home.
I didn't rack up any debt, bills are still PIF each month. I have 20% going into my 401k every paycheck and this year I will max out my contributions. I have maxed out my contributions to my Roth for the past couple years, and I save $200/paycheck in my car fund. I ended up getting a "new"/used car a couple months ago because my 3 year old car was causing me so much grief (read: repairs) that I pretty much couldn't afford it any longer. During that 3rd year of ownership, I paid over $5k in repairs above and beyond routine work. So much for a reliable VW!
I'm not going to post any numbers. It was strange: this year was the first time in about 9 years that I didn't create some sort of spreadsheet. I think I'll get back to one next year for some serious saving. If I get into that grad program, I'll be starting in June (and quitting work) so I'll need to practice keeping my spending down anyway. It's good to see all the good numbers from everyone!

Update: Still no saving going on here, but LOTS of spending. We are very close to being able to list our old house for sale. We had a pre-inspection done and found out that the roof needs replaced rather than just repaired. Some of the items we've already had done or need to do: Refinish hardwood floor (done) Replace carpet (done) New light fixtures (done) Landscaping (done) Crawl space cleanup Rood replacement Window and gutter cleaning House cleaning Other minor stuff that was found during pre-inspection (done) Not to mention all the other stuff DH did before we moved out like refinishing kitchen/bathroom cabinets, new counters, fresh paint, etc. Ugh, bye-bye money, it's been nice knowing ya. We have savings specifically for a lot of this stuff, but it still hurts. And hopefully we'll get it back when we sell. I'm looking forward to getting the old place sold and starting some savings goals again! Happy July 4th!

I won't have numbers until next week but things are certainly in flux.
I really don't believe that people think about how much it really costs after they pass on. I am finding this out with mom. Especially since she lived a state away. Having a lawyer is going to be so helpful but it is not cheap. Having to deal with a estate broker and realtor are not going to be easy fixes in and of themselves. But they will help with the stress level that I have so it is worth the 35% that the broker is going to charge. I really don't want to be doing multiple trips down to Oregon to clean, sort and than attempt to sell mom's things.
But I still have to pay for the lot rent on her mobile, along with the power. I have to get it cleaned up and remove any trash and debris. So this just keeps adding up.
But I am so looking forward to Jamaica next week. Bring on the rum!

Alright, Murphy has hit us 3 times this past 2 month...that means he can move on, right? RIGHT?!?!
First was the car- that cost us almost $1,000 in repairs. Then our dryer went out. Thankfully, it was an easy fix (the belt snapped) and H repaired it for under $30. Monday evening, our a/c went out. It couldn't have happened last week when it was unusually less humid and hot here, to the point that we actually shut the a/c off and opened windows! No, it waited until it was full on humidity, 90+, and a holiday that businesses like HVAC repair close for. It was a long wait, but they came this morning and got it up and running in 20 minutes. $220 later anyway. My poor E.F.

Well I had a few crying jags over the last few days with it being the 1 month mark on Mom's passing and the anniversary of Dad and K's marriage. With both K and Mom gone I spent time with Dad over the weekend and admired his not yet installed new flooring.
Please make sure that if you have a water line going to your fridge that you check it yearly. There was a issue with Dad's and he now needs to replace all of his hardwood flooring in the kitchen, half bath, both pantrys and the hallway.

wow! I logged in to my Citi account to see if it had been updated with a minimum payment number yet (cycle closed on the 28th) and boy, was I surprised. I had budgeted $300 for that payment, and the minimum is $102. so yay for that, right? this is a 0% offer until next year, I forget at the moment until exactly when.
so, I'm going to send them $125/month and add the other $175 I could afford to send as well over to the balance I'm trying to pay off next. nice!
