Pilates is pretty similar to yoga, which is why they combine it a lot of the time. Depends on what you don't like about yoga. I'm waiting until Lent to restart everything, and stuffing my face until then! DS1's b-day is this weekend, and I'm buying cake from the good place in town. Plus, my area goes nuts with paczki, and being Polish and all, I really need to have at least one (or more), right? It's like my duty or something! It'll be easier to lose weight if I gain a bunch right before, right?

I love yoga but hate pilates. To me they are nothing alike except that you use a mat for both. I have the lovely negative feedback cycle that is weak core and low back/sciatic nerve problems. When my core is being worked too hard, my low back kicks in, which in turn harms my low back. But the only way to strengthen my core is to let it do all the work... but when it does do all the work, it can't and starts "offloading" it onto my back, etc. etc. etc. So I very rarely do pilates because it usually ends in back pain. The Blogilates workouts are tolerable because she does a variety of different moves that are not all the typical pilates exercises. Even with that, I'll maybe do a pilates-type workout once a month max.
I'm starting to really appreciate barre. Yes your legs will be SCREAMING within a few minutes, but you get so much out of it.

Last year, when I was doing yoga every night plus pilates or something else, I could pinpoint a number of the same poses for both. I can't remember any now, except cat/cow, which pilates calls something lightly different. Anyway, to each their own--do what you like that works for you.

Feeling beat up from my chiropractor appt. Massage therapist massacred my rotator cuff, shoulder and neck, then I had my adjustment which always makes me a bit sore. So... I only managed 10k steps today. I have been getting 12k the last couple.of days trying to make up for Monday and the blisters. As of now, I am just a few.hundred shy of 40k for 4 days. I will make up the difference tomorrow and hit a minimum of 50k for monday- Friday.

I think I may run by the gym this weekend after work sometime and see how long I can hang on the elliptical. I may also try some weights to see if I can get rid of my lunch lady arms. I don't need huge muscles, I would just like my arms to stop waving when I do.

I swam last night - it was tough. Morons have discovered the pool I swim at, so I had to wait for a lane. Then I haven't swum in what 2 weeks? Have stroke clinic on saturday - nervous to see how that goes

I don't like yoga, but have thought about trying pilates to see if I like it better. Am I setting myself up for disappointment? I have a crunch video that is a yoga pilates blend that i really like... it is more "Active" that just yoga. www.amazon.com/Crunch-Super-SlimDown-Pilates-Blend/dp/B000CEXF8IIi bought the digital copy so i can access it anywhere. That is one of my favorite workout videos! It's also on YouTube. :-) I will start it again once I am cleared for activity. Had hip surgery two weeks ago so I am only doing gentle ROM now, which reminds me I need to call the PT and set up my appointments. But I should be able to put my bike on our trainer in a couple of weeks!

I feel like I can't do both at the same time. Having my babies messed up my core as well, but also years of sitting at a computer desk all day. I also have a hard tie remembering to engage my pelvic floor like they say to do. I had months of PT after the babies to deal with that area. The key for me to remembering to tighten my muscles has been the tip I heard to tuck in your bottom ribs into your body, while keeping chest open/shoulders back & down at the same time. It was mentioned in passing after years of ballet classes, and mentioned once in my most recent pilates video. I usually get everything else aligned, and then put my thumbs on the bottom ribs to push them in. If you like to do barre or dance for exercise, using the proper body placement during it should really enhance your results.

Was the hip issue due to that? Are you itching to run again? I am a runner and I miss it! Haven't ran a race since last April. :-( I have/had femoroacetabular impingement, which is just fancy words for extra bone growth on the femoral head. It's developmental, so running just helped symptoms show up now rather than later. I had a torn labrum and cartilage damage. My plan is to hire a run coach in three months to help me ease back to running smartly. I'll most likely stick with 5k and 10k distances from now on. So here I am hoping to maintain some motivation from you ladies!

Depending on tonight I might try to go to gym and do leg muscle strengthening stuff. Stupid weak muscles and biology! Or since it's nice maybe we kidnap DF's sister's puppy for nice long walk.

I was just talking to a coworker about running 5ks again. I never ran an a tire 5k... I alternated walking and jogging. Maybe I will try the C25K again once I have treadmill access again. Anything more than a 10k is just too much. Lol

When I met the coach he asked me what my goals were and then started with basic freestyle tips. The whole point of this class is to meet you where you are, and work from there. I was like - dude, don't you want to see me swim first? Because "breathe to the side" is a skill I already got... Once he saw me swim he had some further advice, which I think is good but feels weird and unnatural. Not that's it's wrong, it just feels weird compared to how I've been swimming my whole life. Then again, I'm going to this class to improve my stroke and get faster, so changing my stroke is kind of the point. We will see.
ETA: Ill put the tips intro practice in my swims this week and see how it goes.

Well it looks like coach at grownup swim class knows what he's doing. Did my swim today and tried using his technique pointer in my warmup and swam my fastest 50 ever by 8 seconds. Only problem? I WASNT TRYING TO GO FAST, I JUST DONT KNOW HOW TO GO SLOW USING THAT ARM TECHNIQUE. It was, frankly, a huge amount of work because there doesn't seem to be a low gear. I was so exhausted I did kickboard for the last 700 yards of my 1800 yard swim because I didn't want to quit but I just could NOT do any more of that. I'm not even sure I'm doing it right for fuck's sake!
So, we will see what he says next week. Sheesh.

And my arms and shoulders are looking really good. I'll just keep plugging along and hope by summer I have some seriously toned legs!
