Man......you can get pelted to death with tumbleweeds out here. Or maybe it's run over by tumbleweeds. After all, they are pretty big. I mean, you can be pelted by rain drops, or maybe stones. That stuff is pretty small. Now that I think about it, I believe peltings are generally reserved for small stuff.....But peltings by tumbleweeds? Hey! It can happen.. Whatever the case, it's fargin dead out here....Ah.....the old days........

Way out west there was this fella I wanna tell ya about. Goes by the name of Jeff Lebowski. At least that was the handle his loving parents gave him, but he never had much use for it himself. See, this Lebowski, he called himself "The Dude". Now, "Dude" - there's a name no man would self-apply where I come from. But then there was a lot about the Dude that didn't make a whole lot of sense. And a lot about where he lived, likewise. But then again, maybe that's why I found the place so darned interestin'. See, they call Los Angeles the "City Of Angels"; but I didn't find it to be that, exactly. But I'll allow it as there are some nice folks there. 'Course I ain't never been to London, and I ain't never seen France. And I ain't never seen no queen in her damned undies, so the feller says. But I'll tell you what - after seeing Los Angeles, and this here story I'm about to unfold, well, I guess I seen somethin' every bit as stupefyin' as you'd seen in any of them other places. And in English, too. So I can die with a smile on my face, without feelin' like the good Lord gypped me. Now this here story I'm about to unfold took place in the early '90s - just about the time of our conflict with Sad'm and the I-raqis. I only mention it because sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? Sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here - the Dude from Los Angeles. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's the Dude. The Dude, from Los Angeles. And even if he's a lazy man - and the Dude was most certainly that. Quite possibly the laziest in all of Los Angeles County, which would place him high in the runnin' for laziest worldwide. Sometimes there's a man, sometimes, there's a man. Well, I lost my train of thought here. But... aw, hell. I've done introduced it enough. I had a good meeting with Frank in Edmonton, Ab. - of all places - a little over a week ago. Discussed world domination and the likes. The good old days laid the foundation for a future filed with fun.

Frank! I thought you left us for good! When the election is over, people will start talking about important things again.

Election years always get a little like this. As Gel said, it will all pass soon enough.

I think the board must have lost some 'thread starters' over the last several years because it doesn't seem like there is much new discussion. If you remove the games threads and political posts, there isn't that much going on. It seems like most of the threads are basically somebody posting ans asking for advice on really weird situations (e.g my hillbilly brother wants to live in my basement with his 4 kids) and everyone just piling on saying not to let him. Basically, a lot of stuff that is not applicable to others where all the advice is basically the same .
I think Reddit has really squashed a lot of message boards. If you want to talk personally finance or building a home or raising kids, there are active subreddits that will give you different opinions rather than the same group of people.

What Happened? Well basically the entire site has become "EE" (Everything Else). Most of the boards and posters are now women.(not a bad thing, just how it is, boards evolve) For a while there was a pretty good amount of male bashing going on. Mostly now just chit chat and insider discussion on all the boards. Very little actual money, investing, or financial discussion. Even the arguments and hot discussion are mostly gone. BUT......that is the nature of "chat rooms". What about male bashing ? I always thought that was the way it was supposed to be, not just a once in a while thing.

But THIS is the group of people I want to talk to.... That's fine, but staying for friends instead of a topic usually leads to a much less active community. If you look back like 5 years at EE or YM, the thread at the bottom of the page had a "last comment" of only a few days ago. Now if you do the same, you're talking a gap of several weeks. So threads are staying on the front page 2-3 weeks after the last comment. It could mean less people are starting threads or maybe existing threads are longer, but either way it probably isn't ideal.

Or maybe with new threads we all bounce all over threads more than we used to... I know sometimes I need to go back 4-5 pages to find what I want. Often 2-3.

On New Topics, you need to go back 3 pages to get beyond yesterday... So overall we have active threads I think... Yes, not as much new raw meat as we used to, but I don't think we are dying yet...

Look at the last 24 hours under "New Topics". I just did a quick count and there are basically 2 pages worth of topics with 40 threads updated. Out of those 80 threads, there are 33 of them that are "Mega-Threads" e.g. Favorite Memes, Women in Red Racers, Animals A-Z, etc. Most forums that I have been on do not allow threads like that to continue for very long because they are hard to navigate for newcomers and they come off as cliquish.

Every forum isn't for every person. I just hit that white "x" inside the red box when I find one of those. If there are subjects you'd like to talk about, start a thread. I don't do that very often myself because I have trouble figuring out where to put them!

I fear this may not be the forum I was looking for I bet you can find something that interests you if you look. Right now, it's all Heil Hillary and Trump, but that will fade after the election. There are lots of interesting topics. There are money topics, news topics, political topics, current events topics and everything else! If you tell us what you are looking for, someone might be able to direct you.

I think one of the problems is the hyper-division. We have more than 40 sub-boards (excluding the recipes part, with the 8 or whatever sub-boards under that.) If you frequent one or two of those, it is hit or miss. I would venture to say that the majority of people do "New Topics" which renders all of those micro-categories useless.
No solution is going to make everyone happy, and I am not a proponent of over-simplifying things. I just know that there are pro's and con's to the way we have it set up, and likely an equal number of pro's and con's to any alternative we can come up with. One of the "con's" of the current system is that if you chose to look at each board individually, you will find a lot of boards with very little activity.
And yes, the 80/20 rule applied. 80% of our threads were started by (probably less than) 20% of our posters. We lost a couple of good thread starters. If you can think of 10 fun topics - post them!

What happened? One word: attrition. People wander off, lose interest, move on, etc. over the years (we have been around for almost 6 now) and in order to maintain critical mass, new ones need to visit the site. But this board is all but impossible to find unless you're specifically looking for it. Most search engines rank make-your-own message boards slightly below Taiwanese breast enlargement spam, and we don't have the money for advertising. As far as politics and current events, this message board is still a far cry better than e.g. usmessageboard.com. We have a dedicated bunch of locals.

...... May I suggest merging Market Talk with Investing Basics and Beyond ? Not a bad idea Uncle. But to everyone else I believe Frankq was referring to Market Talk thread itself. This used to be a booming thread at one time with lots of serious investors and commenters. However, a few individuals keep causing trouble to the point they drove everyone out. Those guys are gone now but unfortunately it collapsed this board to the point where it is useless now in it's current state. I keep hoping others will come over but those that do don't stay long, probably because of the loneliness. Oh well...................... the memories ...................... we will always have the memories.

As I recall the Investing Basics spun off Market talk due to some of the infighting between posters back then. Since those guys are long gone I would think it would be good to recombine them. I miss the topics and the discussions (did we have too many really strong A type personalities back then?)
