crabfest
(crabber challenge)
This isn't real thought provoking (drag and drop crabs in to basket, before time runs out), and I don't know how long they'll keep it available, but I sure wish I had some crab cakes and crab Alfredo right now!
I bought a can of crab meat last week and made a dip with it. But the crab meat didn't have hardly any flavor, so I was very disappointed.
Have you been to Red Lobster's Crabfest? How was it?

My brother wanted to go there last night for dinner with him, his DW, 2 DDs and his ILs, but he thought the chances of them saying my ok was slim to none. He really wanted the crabfest.

We used to have a Red Lobster here, but they folded. American chains tend to not do well here, from Red Lobster to Taco Bell to Krispy Kreme.

Yup, I love seafood. Red lobster isn't anywhere near my favorite seafood restaurant but it does in a pinch.

I'm kind of surprised it does well any where (It's not my fav. But then I don't care for seafood, other than crab, mild salmon and halibut.) I haven't been there for years. When I was, I had salad and a baked potato, which cost $16.00. Seemed expensive for 15+ yrs ago. But their crabfest menu looks really tasty to me. On the other hand, I thought Taco Bell did well everywhere! LOL What are some of the fast food places you have there?

I've never set foot in a Red Lobster, and the only one I know of that's ever been in my area closed after a very short time. said site was owned by the parent company, so they put an Olive Garden in its place, and that has done about as well as a chain restaurant will do in a touristy area. RL's downfall in the same spot? I'm on Cape Cod. nobody is going to go to a Red Lobster for seafood here, even the dumbest of tourists.
that said, are the rest of you that have been to RL's "crabfest" from the Midwest or some other landlocked area? I don't want to question your judgment, but that's not really fresh fish, any day of the week....

On the other hand, I thought Taco Bell did well everywhere! LOL What are some of the fast food places you have there? Oh, we have the usual McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. However, we're spoiled rotten. It's a foodie city, and there are delights to be had on every corner. From little Caribbean shops selling flying fish, conch chowder and stewed oxtail, to fancy French restaurants, to wonderful Greek places with tarama, souvlaki and pastitsio, to Indian restaurants serving piping hot samosas, and butter chicken, to Middle Eastern falafel and shish taouk, they're literally EVERYWHERE! Even our food trucks sell gourmet food. There are over 3,000 restaurants in this city. The competition is extremely fierce. If your food isn't fantastic, you fold. So why would anybody go to Red Lobster? Sure, people grab burgers on the go when they're in a hurry, but generally, US chains don't do well. Even Krispy Kreme. Why go there when there are so many really good French patisseries that will blow your mind?

The thing is, that they have all these amazing pictures in their ads. But that isn't what I would get, if I went there. I'm sure. Just wishful thinking! LOL Feel free to question my judgement ANYtime I post something so foolish. You could/would save me from who knows what! So what I really want, is some really good, fresh crab (cakes?). And there is no such thing, in my part of the Rockies. - sigh.

My original post contains a link to a game. You drag n drop crabs in to the crab net. You can choose EASY or HARD. Time is short. Different types of crab are worth different amounts. After all, we are in the game area. I was just trying to follow the COC.

I like Red Lobster. I know it's a chain but I've always been happy with what I order. As far as seafood goes I only like lobster, crab & shrimp. I'll eat scallops but don't like them well enough to order them.
I've never been to New England so I might change my mind about RL if I ever had a fresh Maine lobster. I did have fresh Slipper lobster when I was in T&C but they taste a little different.

Love crab. We do have a red lobster about 1 1/2 hours from here. Problem is, when we get there I tend to get sidetracked by 1/2 dozen different kinds of shrimp......

oh, no judgment questioning here. just reality on the coast. that's why I was curious if y'all are landlocked? I used to live close to you. I remember going to Fairhaven and getting fried clams type of thing. the problem here is even though I am close enough to see the ocean, other than very expensive tourists spots, there is no "fresh" fish that you can buy. The tourists spots are also insanely expensive. The fishing boats sell theirs to the restaurants and the rest is all IQF on the boat long before it comes to shore. There literally is no place to get actual fresh fish anymore. The grocery stores have IQF fish that is about as good as any fish market I have seen. I think people would be shocked as how much fish today is actually IQF on the boats before it comes to shore. Most of the time the still frozen IQF is actually fresher than the fresh fish anymore IMO.

I can walk to it. they go out daily and catch most of their haul, but do bring in things like Alaskan salmon that has to be IQF. it's just a matter of knowing what you want and trusting the vendor, IMHO.

I know a few fishermen. The funny part is if I go about 45 minutes inland I can actually get fresh fish easily from the fishing boats. Those boats are much smaller and mostly owned by the captain who doesn't own more than one. Here a lot of the boats go back and forth between the cape and here. Most sell their catch before they catch it though. This area is too commercial though for regular people to just be able to buy it from them.
I remember as a kid at my grandparents going to the dock as the boats came in to see what they had that they would sell. Around here those days are long gone.

DD1's b-day was today. She made reservations for everyone to go to a nice restaurant (steak and seafood). Average cost is probably around $70 per person, just for dinner (without drinks or appetizers). I was pretty excited to eat there, since I've been wanting crab lately. A few days ago, I got a text from DD2 asking if I got the text from DD1, about dinner. I can't get 'group' messages, so I didn't get it. She told me dinner was going to be at 7. Later, I talked to DD1, who told me dinner was at 7:30. Since she was making the reservations, I figured she would know. I didn't mention the time discrepancy. -Also, a few years ago, when we were getting together for dinner, DD2 told me 1/2 hour earlier, so I wouldn't be late. It turned out I was early, so I had to sit by myself for 45 minutes, waiting. I thought maybe she had done the same thing again. It turned out dinner really was at 7:00. I missed DD1's birthday and the seafood I was planning to have. I am SO bummed! I had told DD1 I would buy her dinner. Then I didn't go. Luckily, I thought to call the restaurant and give them my info, so she didn't have to pay for her own meal. I'm still bummed. I heard the food and service were both 'perfect'. And their server, turned out to be the owner, so he gave a hefty discount on their food bill. Nice! I bought some Krab dip and crackers, to take to the lake yesterday. I hoped having it on crackers would make it tolerable. No such luck! That stuff is nasty!

Individual quick frozen. Frozen individually then put in a bag. So when you open a bag of frozen shrimp you can use half and return rest to the freezer. I grew up fishing with my dad. Fresh is always best. If you can freeze that day and then use it the same day you defrost it is still good. I am going to my family vacation in FL next week and hope to come home with a cooler full of fresh frozen lobster and fish. Most commercial fishing boats go out for days at a time, so they freeze the fish on the day that they catch it. Better than keeping it refrigerated for several days. Since I grew up eating fresh or fresh frozen fish and do not live near the ocean I do not buy any fish that claims to be fresh. I do buy frozen fish. I also rarely eat fish at a restaurant.
