Florida is horrible. You should not waste your time in that hellhole. There are mosquitos the size of cats and they carry the Zika virus, which is in the process of mutating into a more virulent form that imitates Ebola. You should stay far, far away and tell your snowbird friends to stay away, too. LOL! You forgot the Gators and shootings! Wait... I'm snow birding in Florida! Where I live year 'round.

You're still welcome to come retire here, you just need to stop blabbing about how great it is to your northern friends. Unless they're active and fun. And can navigate simple things like the grocery store. And drive at least close to the speed limit... Without their blinker on for 3 miles...

In Arizona last year, DH and I were on the freeway driving. The message board over the freeway had issued a silver alert.
We had never heard of a silver alert.
It happens when an elderly person with limited capacities takes off in their car (or on foot sometimes ).
Something new in the land of the snowbirds.

LOL - I am trying to decide where to buy my "last" home. FL or in the area I am currently in (but much further away from the metro area). I don't think I want to live somewhere that I have to snowbird away . . . there must be somewhere that is pleasant year round? Somewhere you don't feel you must escape from . . . I don't want to have 2 homes or even home/apartment. it is too much to take care of two places, especially when one is a day's flight away. Snow-birding feels like more work than just picking one best place to live

Full disclosure: I don't know that I'm fun. I DO drink a lot and drive like an asshole though....so there's that. Yay!

I already live somewhere with mild winters. What I would like to do in retirement is just travel a lot during the summer months. It is WAY too hot where I live. Like rockit said, I don't want to maintain 2 homes. I do want to spend part of the summer in a cooler climate though. I would love to be able to spend several weeks of the summer in northern Europe, Alaska, Canada, or the northern US.

We're suppose to be 104 today and 120 by Sunday. Being a Snowbird sounds really appealing at the moment. Or even moving to Flagstaff for the summer.

I'm the picture that accompanies the definition of "ghost-white skin" in the dictionary. Sunshine and I don't mix well, although, I do love sunny weather as long as it is not hot and humid. I don't "do" humidity. So, I plan on snowbirding in Maine. I already live in New England and the cold and snow don't bother me. The short winter days suck the life out of me, but not enough to move far enough south for the days to be longer (which would mean heat and humidity). Come visit me in Maine, you drinkers and asshole drivers.

You need to set up a deal where your friends visit you in winter and you visit them in summer. I'm planning three domestic trips this summer to catch a break from Florida heat.

Our biggest challenge in retirement is DW will want to be a snowbird and I want to sunbird.

Alligators, snakes and rats all seek out tourists and snowbirds as a delicacy. Tell your northern friends... stay away. The wildlife is everywhere and it's all trying to get you.

I have never been to Florida, but I like geckos, so maybe I should visit sometime. Are you sure the rats aren't just free-lance Chihuahuas?

The rats are quieter and therefore make better pets than Chihuahuas. Chihuahuas seemed to be more of a Phoenix thing than a SW Florida thing, though. Maybe they're more common in Miami?

I was just wondering 'cause sometimes it's hard to tell. I can't comment on the demographic distribution of Chihuahuas in Miami as I have never been there what with it being in Florida and all.
I did meet quite a personable Chihuahua mix named Sparky the other day. He was quite a handsome fellow, despite the ears. Not sure what the "mix" part was, though. Something taller than a Chihuahua and less bug-eyed and apparently calmer. He was not at all trembly or hateful.

I am in Seattle and don't really snowbird. I go to my boyfriend's house 100 miles south if I am too hot like two weeks ago for two weeks. His house is cooler and he pays for heat and air conditioning. I have the heat on now it is about 63 and I like 70. Winter runs about 40 and I like 70, we don't shovel rain. I would like some place that was more daylight and about 65 in the winter but not hot places or cold places.

I have never been to Florida, but I like geckos, so maybe I should visit sometime. Are you sure the rats aren't just free-lance Chihuahuas? They are real. And big. And they are equal opportunity residents. You can be in the low end communities or very high end communities. They love the preserve areas next to all the communities. They must out smart the gators, because they are right there with them!
