alwaysbeoptimizing: sorry for the power outage, but I found your post, and your thinking behind it, very helpful. We are definitely missing GHBs in our planning.

Our local paper has been running a series on preparing for "The Big One", a large scale earthquake. They have divided up what you need into a 24 week series. The idea was that you could slowly build up your supplies without breaking the bank. Every other week they are publishing another list of items. I have found it a very manageable way to look at assembling things and thinking about what I might need. I am not following week by week with them but instead focusing on general areas. (First aid items, water, pets, etc) Here is a link to the list.

Obviously, depending upon where one lives, there needs to be some tweaking. Winters here in New England can get bitterly cold, so storing water, batteries, medicines, etc. outside in the garage (many around here are still unheated) is not going to work. I need to find a place that would likely be accessible but heated during the winter. I'd also probably divide the stuff and store it in one or more places in case one location was completely destroyed or under water. I guess, as I type this out, the issues for me are not so much identifying the items I would need, but how to best store them.

I am working on a bag for my car, here its the cold in the winter.
I too have a filter straw, these are called Life Straws and you can drink from dirty water if need be, several hundred gallons, have 1 for each of us. Spendy, $29 or so each.
Just got a waterproof holder for matches, have extra flashlight batteries for the car. Have to get my items together, I have rain coats, thermo blankets, all kinds of stuff stashed I have bought and need to put together for winter.
For my pantry downstairs, I just added 6 cans of Red Feather butter, 10 year shelf life, canned bacon, canned pork and beef. I have lots of other stuff. Have tried a can of each, it all tastes good, they too have 10 year life. Be very careful of some of this survivor crap. I had some that was powdered shortening and needed it one time, it was worthless couldn't even use it in baked goods, imagine if you stocked that and needed it, horrible.
Shortening or oils are one of the worse, they taste rancid quick. We are also having a hard time finding regular soda crackers that are good anymore, I think they are made in Mexico and taste like plastic or something. Really bad. I just keep adding a bit of this and that. Have about 5 gallons of lamp oil and wicks.

I didn't go through all the posts so I'm sorry if this is a duplicate. A friend of mine in Wisconsin made sure the bike helmets were always put away in the basement. Not only could her kids always find them but heaven forbid a hurricane came through they had head protection.
Just thought this was worth sharing.
