LOL Oped! It is what the SPED group told me back then.
My BFF just had to engage an attorney and file a suit with her school district to get appropriate education for her adopted child. In no way do I interpret it as easy as 'write a letter to demand testing'. It is ridiculous that parents have to push that hard to get the education that is promised. GRG's post sheds some light on that. If the federal funding isn't actually flowing like it should, that would explain the school districts' reluctance to identify and serve the kids as needed.

Sorry all - had to walk away for the weekend because I was fuming mad at the principal. Needed some mental space for myself.
My son has crohn's disease and when the principal suggested that a 504 plan (that was recommended by the special ed teacher and the district school psychologist) might not be appropriate based on his medical diagnosis unless there were ALSO an ADD/ADHD diagnoses because crohn's disease doesn't "impact learning" I lost my marbles. After going off on the principal (in a constructive manner linking all kinds of cites to major university hospitals here in the US who note 504 plans as appropriate for pediatric crohn's patients) I left it alone for a couple of days. Poor kid is sitting in the repulsive math final right now. He will fail it and I will not give a single thought to the grade. He has stayed after school and worked with the math teacher for an hour + every day for 2 weeks. This should demonstrate that 10+ additional hours of one on one work with the teacher were of no benefit.
Ideally what I want is a new frigging math teacher that knows how to teach! That won't come of the SST, but it might from my registered complaint to the school district (oh along with the 10 others that parents I know are submitting).
Oh, and another science test on Thursday - that makes 6 tests in 6 weeks! Ugh.
