Well...laugh all you want but after my nervous break down followed by weight loss I had noticed my hair are thinning. Not falling but getting finer. I had taken biotin. Seemed like it had better. But again now it seems its not as thick as it used to be... And it isn't growing as it used to be. Should I get fat again? Darn! I am liking myself now better but hair! Girls...let's help me here. Boys are welcome to participate but only about head hair. Understood?

Are you taking a multivitamin? You should. I have heard castor oil on the scalp works well, maybe look up some information on that.

Thinning hair can be related to thyroid or changing hormones. Talk with your doctor at your next visit. There are over the counter medicines that can be used by women. Oils and conditioners just make thin hair feel thicker but you need to find the cause of the problem.

My hair is definitely thinner than it used to be; I think in my case it was related to hormonal changes from menopause. I remember when I was pregnant years ago that I read that all the pregnancy hormones made your hair thicker (till after you had the baby). This is the opposite process.
I really hope I don't end up like some of the older ladies I see, whose hair is so thin you can see their scalp. Dying it and getting a frizzy perm isn't very good camouflage!

I am on synthroid for years...it never screwed my hair until now. I think I have the same count but finer quality! Darn I should had counted it BEFORE it started thinning! I don't know if there is services like 'hair count'... Wait! Have I just gotten an idea for a new business?
And I hate to put oil on my scalp. It seems so...oily!

Mine is too, but I screwed up thyroid meds that caused mine. It's been almost a year and its some better, I took biotin too but now I'm taking collagen with hyalounric acid. It calls for 4 tabs a day but I'm only taking 1 as it upsets my stomach to take that many. Says 3 weeks or so to help, its also supposed to help joins and skin. I think it is the joints some.
Of course being 70 also likely contributes, but the thyroid was what really screwed it up. I'll take upset stomach over constipation anytime! Mkes your pants fit better also!

I've been having the same problem. I started taking Viviscal last year and still take it but I haven't noticed a difference at all. Not sure if I'll spend any more money on it. I also take Biotin and B12. My problem is my hair doesn't grow. It's been the same length for about 3 years.
Oddly, my nails grow like crazy. I have to cut and file them down every couple of weeks so I don't know what to do about my hair. I'll keep checking this thread for ideas, though.

I remember taking iron during pregnancy and everything grew. I was thinking of giving it to my husband...I did not... Don't take something isn't working!
I am wondering if I must take multivitamins. I take B12, biotin, C and D. What else do I need?
I do have to tell you when I was using Garnier product it was all fine. Then I had decided to switch. Maybe I will go back and report!

If you already take the vitamins you listed above I don't think a multivitamin is needed, but maybe ask your doctor next time you go. You should definitely go back to using Garnier products and see if that could be the issue. Sometimes a change like that causes a problem. Wish that was my problem because that one is easy to fix!

I've started taking collagen to help with my aching bones (arthritis starts young in my family). Bonus is it helps nails and hair grow better. I use Piping Rock Integral Collagen and take 3 in the morning, 3 in the evening.

I take biotin daily. I also started applying burdock root oil to my scalp about once a week. That's supposed to stimulate hair growth.

My hair is thinning, too. But I'm pretty sure it's all hormone related.
For a while I was on spirononlactone. I took myself off of it (and BCP) because I wanted to see what was going on with my body.
I don't think the spiro really helped all that much.
I should take biotin again.
My way of dealing with hair is just using products for thinning hair. If you have an Ulta close by, lots to choose from. I'm guessing this is something I inherited.

I lost a CRAP TON of hair a few years ago. Dermatologists claim it was stress, but I think it was Mirena. Whatever caused it, it was horrible and made me feel like shit. They did complete work ups on me for hormones and everything was normal. I took Spiro too, but it was expensive and I didn't think it was doing any good so I quit. I still have an almost full bottle at home. I take biotin every night and Vitamin D? Can't remember. I had the Mirena removed last Fall and it has gotten better, at least there are not areas so thin you can see scalp, but I'll never have have beautiful hair. Never did, it was always baby fine, but at least I had a lot of it! Maybe it was menopause? I never got my period back after the Mirena and that was 6 months ago.

Also, what are you doing with your hair? Pulling it back into ponytails & buns is NOT good for thinning hair. Washing more than 2x per week can really strip your hair & make it break & appear thinner. Rinse & condition daily if you want, but limit the use of shampoo. And get a good brush - I love using the Wet Brush for tangles. It doesn't pull out as much hair as the other brushes do.

I HAVE to wash my hair every day. I produce oil like nobody's business and with fine hair I look a greasy mess if I don't.

I don't really brush my hair I have naturally curly hair. I use a pick on it when it's wet. I do have bangs, that I use a brush on just to straighten a little. I wash my hair every other day to every day. Even when I wash my hair every day, though, I lose very little before my body thinks its ovulating. After it thinks it ovulates..that's when I lose more hair.

Is brushing even really necessary though? The soft bristle brushes I understand because they distribute your natural oils and such throughout your hair/scalp and are relatively gentle. But I don't really see the helpfulness of regular brushes....

My hair is thin & tangles up easily. DD is the same. The back of her head will mat up overnight. So we need to brush it out in the morning.
MPL - my hair can get greasy too. But, the less I use shampoo the less oily it is. The more it's stripped of it's natural oils, it keeps producing more. It takes a week or so to settle down but then your hair will be super soft. I still rinse with warm water and massage my scalp, which helps cut down on the oil buildup there.

Spirolactone is a weird drug. I use it for acne issues, not really hair. But I found out it is used for both too much hair and too little! Kid you not, stared at my doctor like an idiot before I asked if she was fucking kidding me. My hair was falling out on it, took a while to notice because I have so much and at the time so long that I thought it was in my head. Cut the dose in half and now my hair isn't falling it anymore.
Just an fyi.

Just an fyi. Yes, a lot of women with hirsutism (usually PCOS-related) take spironolactone. I take it as well for hormonal cystic acne, been on it for over five years, and you can wrestle it from my cold, dead hands! It's a diuretic with antiandrogen properties, so that's why women with hormonal imbalances usually respond well to it. I ended up increasing my dose slightly when I went from OCP to Mirena. Spiro works best with OCP since it's a combination pill and Mirena is just progesterone.

MPL, have you tried dry shampoo at all? Just a little absorbs oil and your hair is fresh for another day sans shampoo!

I think I noticed it not long after I switched to Mirena. I told my mom the exact same thing when she was yelling at me to lower my dose. I told her I'd try it but I'd rather wear wigs then have my face look like a 16 year old when I was (then) almost 30. She scoffed and I don't think she really believed me that I'd figure something out with my hair before going back to those painful cysts that made me feel awful covering up everyday. Hell if I miss a couple doses in a week a zit or two will break through so I definitely know I haven't "grown past it" yet.

Seems maybe it was a combo of Mirena and that high of dose of spiro?

Lol, there are so many! I used to use the Keratin one when Target sold it for $3 (I think it's $5 or $6 now, I'm weirdly cheap). Now I use the Refresh and Revive one because they have a two-pack for $6. I should say I don't have a thin hair problem, but I do only wash my hair three times a week. Dry shampoo helps with that.
