"It goes without saying you'll notice a strong correlation between what you were thinking and what the software was showing you, but beyond this I believe you'll be astonished by the number of times the software attempted to manipulate your thinking, and just as astonished by the number of times it succeeded in doing so. "
hen you "like" stuff on Facebook, Facebook will keep giving you stuff you like. It's as simple as that.

When you are paranoid can FB read that and send people to follow you around?

Geez.
Give a girl some credit for being capable of independent thought.
If I was so easily malleable, wouldn't be parroting back everything you say, instead of arguing with you?
Now, I wouldn't speak for the masses of Trump supporters who seem to be quite gullible, but as my grandma used to say, I didn't just fall off a turnip truck. Maybe "putty" is bit too strong a word. Your mind is puttyish. Specifically, I'm warning you that it's more puttyish than you realize. I'm also warning that you, like all of us, have already been compromised to an extent. We've had filters, thought processes, even logical fallacies pre-installed by media we consumed long before we had the inclination to question what it was we were consuming. I'm sure you've heard of "deprogramming". There's a whole science behind that too.

As a fan of Sci-Fi and Fantasy fiction, this is all ho hum. The globalist, corporatist state has been predicted so long, its hard for me to care who the panic mongers want to pretend is the start/push of it.
Zuckerberg might be evil. But that's all in his creation, FB.
Maybe that's why all those dystopian sci-fi things are written and produced. One big psy-op to get us to not really care, or to say- it'll never be that bad; Who knows, maybe the CIA made up the label "conspiracy theorist" to discredit anything resembling critical thought. Would it come as any surprise? I mean we've witnessed terms created in real time like "science denier" and "climate denier". I think part of the problem in this thread is you and Virgil are so young. Some of the stuff I am referencing I read in the early 1990s. IMO, most of the good stuff never even comes close to being made a film. And the fun stuff, like Douglas Adam's books - often fall far short of the book(s).
You and Rwers are creating terms in real times as proganda as well. Do you really think you and Rush could corner the market on that? That *I* wouldn't notice?

No one, comes without programming. It is installed even as we are in the womb, experiencing what Mom does. We are given filters about being female, male, white, black, Canadian, Norwegian, etc. Media is only part of the programming. This is why I and some biblical scholars refuse to divorce the bible from the times it was written in.
You do realize some of us older, wiser folks might have read about deprogramming too, yes? All for now, apologies if I am more abrupt than usual. Rough, interesting night at work and after.

Privacy is not being taken away by information technology. It is being taken away by the bean counters and runners of companies. Who do you think ordered the software to monitor truckers? And this was happening way b4 it was automated black box sw in trucks. I remember how ridiculous the accounting for time spent was for Microsoft tech people before 2000 in a big corporation. You want to chat about lack of freedom? Try asking your manager how to account for bathroom trips on your timesheet.
Wish I was kidding. I haven't been around for all of the information revolution, I was born after vacuum tubes were created and never visited a computer the size of room made with those tubes. However, I was never under the illusion that information technology was going to just because, change things for the better. Give us all fluffy clouds, rainbows and our own pet unicorn. People evolve much slower than their tools.
Things did not develop like I was promised/told in college. (1980s) Some things have happened, some still aren't even close, and much turned out different than anticipated due to changes in the economy, politics, and even globally.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Valley
The Scottish guy needs to do more reading even if his ideas/hopes are noble. Silicon Valley was initially about the hardware, not the information (data) that runs on it. There were also these crazy non CA companies like AT&T, IBM, Dec and Texas Instruments that influenced the information progression. MHO.

I'm not saying I'm immune, and it's quite possible--likely, even--that I'm more susceptible because of my age and generation. Having said this, I'm "paranoid" about the abuse of platforms such as Facebook and resultantly don't use them. Normally this would be sufficient to deem oneself "immune" from all Facebook influence, but unfortunately, like Google, Facebook also tracks and profiles you even if you've never used it (due to the ways the Internet works and people embed Facebook crap into everything) hence simply avoiding it isn't good enough. I, however, am blessed with a modicum of technical knowledge. In particular, some simple steps that can be taken to get Facebook and Google's tentacles out of my browser/life without impacting the proper function of the sites I visit. With this aegis at my disposal, combined with militant ad blocking and Facebook avoidance protocols, I can assert with confidence that I am as immune to its influence as any regular user of the Internet can be. Go suck an egg and pet a snow leopard, Mr. Zuckerberg.

People have been trying to influence me since I was old enough to communicate. Not just through media. I am aware that is occurring. My DH would tell you, I am deeply skeptical of nearly everything, but especially anything I see on the internet. FB will not be able to go all Manchurian Candidate on me.
I'm glad you're going to such effort to protect yourself from the evil empire (FB) but I wonder if you realize how much you are being influenced by sources you may believe to be benign?

My only fear is that they are going to use that whole history as the vision that will flash before my eyes when I die. Or maybe I should like the idea because it will let me know how boring my life has actually been and I won't be as sad I am dead.

Go suck an egg and pet a snow leopard, Mr. Zuckerberg. Virgil, we are both IT folk, however you are more current and plugged in and my knowledge is deeper and more extensive. I read UNIX source code the first time, before Linus Torvalds rewrote it. I don't use FB either, but I will. I will go on as a business first, instead of an individual. I am on LinkedIn although not using it very often, and have both Yahoo and Gmail accounts. I know people from Bell Labs, Purdue, and elsewhere who worked on security for UNIX. I am likely more paranoid than you. I also have umm a professional dislike for Microsoft/Bill Gates and its toy operating system roots. MHO.
Be nice to snow leopards! BTW, if you have time, Google "Licks of Love" by Linda Rossin. Unfortunately that miniature has been sold, but please enjoy the image of a mother leopard licking the top of the head of her cub. Linda is an amazing artist I'd had the pleasure to meet. There's a show that was in that ise raising $$ for animals in Africa if memory serves.
And back to Wed 5/25...
Please send alcohol, dress pants, money ummm and stuff. TY <--- Optimist w/ sinus infection

You don't have to be a half-wit to be susceptible to influences or unable to detect those influences. In any case, I was speaking to the universal 'you', and you were the one that set the critical tone of the discussion with Reply #16. I'm glad you're going to such effort to protect yourself from the evil empire (FB) but I wonder if you realize how much you are being influenced by sources you may believe to be benign? Fair question, but this is a discussion about Facebook.

I've been being bombarded with overt and subliminal messages since you were in short pants, young man.

I will admit the older generations don't seem to have as much mush for brains as the younger ones, but that's really not saying much.
