No, you get a check for the value and the title becomes a salvage title... at least in my state. My brother totaled his $4K car when he was in HS but it was still mechanically sound - just very, very ugly. In his case, the entire passenger side had scraped against a telephone pole, so he would have had to replace almost half the exterior surface, doors, trunk lid, etc. The repair total was $6K or something crazy like that. He wasn't wild about driving something that looked like it had lost a match with Gravedigger, but he dealt with it for another couple of years until it finally kicked the dust for good

I've never had a car totaled, but do they let you keep it? I figured the insurance company claimed it and sold it for scrap, but I honestly don't know. No, I don't think you can keep a totaled car. Imagine the insurance fraud that would be going on if they'd let people keep them.

The last time I totaled a car, there was a way for me to keep the car but there was an adjustment to the payout. It was 2+ cars ago and I don't remember the details.

Same here. You can keep the vehicle, but you get less of a payout from insurance, at least it's that way in MN.
