Fingers crossed for a former coworker of mine. My old lab at UNMC is hiring again and she reached out to me asking if I was interested in coming back. I said at the moment no I am fine where I am at. If she'd asked me three months ago different story.
My coworker has been looking into getting his PhD with them since current employer won't sponsor his Visa. It's either he apply for a school one again or he go back home for 3-6 months before coming back which he said is a pain.
This would be the best of both world because he can switch jobs AND if he is employed at UNMC he gets their tuition benefits. He can go part time for his PhD for free.
So I emailed her back saying I have someone who is interested and I would recommend. She sent back her office number and told me to have him call her after he applied.
Fingers crossed for him. After all the crap he takes at previous employer he deserves it.

nersWishing you hear from HR soon, with good news NomoreDramaQ1015Your ex coworker sounds like a very deserving candidate. Fingers crossed he's given the opportunity. As an immigrant, I understand all the hoops to jump through and how difficult it is to get yourself established in the U.S.

I found an opportunity I'm very interested in. It's an internal job at the new company that purchased my employer. I haven't applied or interviewed in a while. So I'm rusty. My employer wasn't good at giving internal candidates opportunities. I don't know how this new company operates. I'm also not sure if the worker shortage continues and if that may play in my favor. The application for internal candidates at the new company takes the information from your profile (current job, education, licenses, etc.) and then asks you to attach a resume. I have a resume which is updated, but I haven't filled out my profile at the new company, oops. My plan is to get the profile done and the application sent this weekend. Tomorrow I'm going to the office because they are giving us all laptops to bring home. There will be IT staff on site to answer questions. I will ask them to make sure my Teams is working properly. I haven't been able to use it for video calls on my personal computers. I'm sure HR will want a video interview if I get to that stage. I'm writing this here to hold myself accountable to do this on this weekend. I'm getting cold feet all the time and Im wary of change in my old age.

I think the university would be better for him in that regard too. In general if this works it would be the best of both worlds for him. Side bonus is I stick it to my old company by helping Peacock's new whipping post get out. And he'd be going to my previous lab based on my recommendation. Now if I could just figure out how to get R a job here my master plan would be complete.

My sales team has officially resigned. I don't have an offer letter from the new company yet but that's supposed to be coming and their hr is researching insurance coverage questions for me. We literally just got ds approved for the latest top of line insulin pump that reads his blood sugar and adjusts dosing automatically. Kinda want to keep that.
My manager at current company would like to keep me too, but the market is really tough right now and realistically she may not have a place for me.
I'm in as good a place as possible considering everything. Looks like staying employed will happen so now just hoping to be able to stay employed with good health insurance.

My coworker is going to meet with my former PI tomorrow and one of my former lab mates.
Hopefully I got him situated with directions. I told him grab someone with a badge if I didn't everyone knows how hard the campus can be to navigate.
I said you might want to look up a few papers written by people in the lab. It wouldn't hurt to be able to share specific interests.
I looked up the head of the department and knew about his big grant. Then I read about.humanized mice so.I had some knowledge about the model.
I told him I'm letting him ride my good name he better not disappoint

I hate insurance stuff. We got a list back giving prices but the insulin pump (and not the newest one) says prior authorization is required. I'm not sure if there is a way to know how likely we are to get approval. We haven't had many issues on current plan and when we have our Dr office was able to push it through, but it's so scary to change.
Eta - also pulling all my personal pictures off my work laptop may take a month. I haven't uploaded to it for years, but I used to use it almost exclusively for making my albums.

My coworker got offered not one but THREE jobs at UNMC! I am so excited for him. I didn't know the one lab he was a postdoc when I was there. I gave him my honest opinion of the other two. I said it really depends on if you want to pursue your PhD, if you want to do that think of what you want your area of study to be and focus on the lab with that bent. I said he has to promise he tells Peacock exactly how he got the job that's what I want in exchange.

D'oh! Forgot to come update last week after I talked to my friend. Unfortunately, they went with someone the director knew, who had the skills and was losing her job for whatever reason. Disappointing, but I can't blame them. I really wasn't thrilled about nights anyway.
On the plus side, my friend did also mention that there should be a couple of other positions coming up sometime this year, though she didn't know when. The company is developing their own platform in order to get away from another company's. They'll need operators that know some basic (non admin) Linux skills- which I do. She said the new platform isn't projected to go live until 2025 but they're going to be hiring and building the team ahead of that. That would be a day shift position, if I could get one.
Also, wishing good luck to ners and raeoflyte!

Has anyone applied for a job through LinkedIn? Is it really legit? This is also a weird case. It is an organization affiliated with the university. It's also a non-profit, but I am unclear as to if they really pay into the pension system. The linked in account says they offer a 401K. Which, bothers me because non-profits I know either do 403b or 457s or a combination of both. They do pay well, though.

I would try to look the job up on the company's site and apply that way mostly for control. Just to make sure it's current info, likely give you more control to attach the right resume/cover letter.

I have never applied through LinkedIn but if it's not some place I am familiar with I will plug it into Google and see what comes up. I have had so many claim to be Omaha but end up being out in freaking Beatrice or further. Omaha has annxed a lot of cities but pretty sure they haven't gotten Norfolk or Beatrice yet. I feel like they are posted by people whose corporate offices aren't located here. That or they are bots grabbing random company names.

Signed the offer letter Now I have hoops to jump through. I also got outed-I have a credential that will transfer to my new job, and apparently they started the process to transfer it almost immediately bc about an hour after signing online I got a zoom request from supervisor, who had gotten alerted to that process. Might be for the best since it gave him a minute to process. He wasn’t angry or anything (I mean, he had no cause to be but that’s never stopped him before Anyway, all official and I did not burn any bridges, even when he gave me an opening to discuss reasons I was leaving, which I feel deserves a cookie. I’m up nearly 15K since this time last year which is sort of mindblowing. Also let the collaborating group know. I got 9 exclamation points of disappointment out of the PI, and an offer to try to set me up with a consulting gig

The job I applied for, I'm thinking I didn't get an interview. It's been two weeks, and I haven't heard anything. It's still only been 9 business days..So maybe I should unclench.

I like to read the ask a manager blog. One of the first things you realize is that hiring moves at the speed of each individual employer and you have no control over the process So, in my mind you apply like you’re setting things free...and if they love you (or have a shred of decency) they’ll probably circle back but again, no control. Especially in July/August when everyone is on vacation, even the wildlife that are hiring managers. Which is a really longwinded way of saying yes, you should probably unclench

I still don't have a job offer from either place. Was told the new company would send over an offer yesterday, but the dudes on vacation. There are 2 positions posted for my current corporate office that I'm going to reach out on today. I know my manager has been putting feelers out, but no luck so far.
Desperately trying to schedule every possible appointment under my current insurance. We've already hit our family deductible for the year, and starting over with our expenses won't be fun.
