Playing around with my spreadsheet. I had a goal of making 60K this year which is 7K more than I ever did and was going to take a lot of OT. Now I'm going to have to be careful not to make over 62K and screw up financial aid for next year.

Got a call about a job applied for weeks ago. Set up an interview. Not sure what to think. Did not get a job at another location where they chose an internal candidate.

I have a preliminary interview set for next week. Not sure what to think...I do want the job, but not sure I want the commute. It’s a project manager position so probably out of the lab, but I think it’d be progress career wise. I suppose it’s a nice position to be in, wanting a new job but not actually needing one. I am also confused by the evolution of the phone interview to a Teams interview. Need to double check that I don’t need to prepare a presentation or anything. Fast response, I only applied Monday. The other good thing is that it knocked me off my butt to email a contact in the same building, who‘s a higher up in a much larger group that does similar stuff to what we do. It’d be nice to keep the same commute and minimize the transition, while still opening up career growth. I do not feel ready for any of this

I applied to the position, but interestingly got called by the person who interviewed me at the other location. I like to think both she and I were disappointed I wasn't hired for that position as we got along well.

Linked in and pubmed stalking reveal that the people who are doing my prelim interview have several publications (maybe even most) in common with the guy I reached out to at my current work site. Raised all kinds of interesting possibilities...I am wondering whether I might be able to have office space there, or even just facilitate a transfer in a year or two. Less good, he hasn’t responded to my email asking if we can meet up for coffee (and brain picking, that part was just implied

Prelim interview went well, I think. I was maybe a little more brash than I might have been but pretty minor. Scheduled for half an hour to an hour, went 90 minutes before I started thanking them for the invitation and conversation (see above about maybe being overly brash   . Haven’t heard back yet on whether they’re inviting me for a full interview, I‘ll give it a couple of days before I jump to the worst possible conclusion . @stillmovingforward gets a gold star-they are currently fully remote. Not sure I want that particularly, although they were psyched I’d be so close to one of their regular collaborators. Also unsure about making the transition out of the lab cold turkey, and whether I’d actually be a good PM. But, I think it went OK and I have lots to think about now.

I'm part of an interview panel where I work, in part because my boss is looking for someone who has a skill set similar to mine for back up purposes. We have had 4 on camera interviews. Only one of the interviewees dressed up, at least from the waist up. The other three all wore plain t-shirts. They didn't have logos or anything like that but struck me as more of something that would be worn on a Saturday afternoon for running errands or working in the yard. Anytime I know I will have to be on camera, especially with a group of people I don't know, I always up my dressiness for the day. I'm at least business casual. Another interesting side note was two of the candidates openly swore while being interviewed, and it wasn't a one time slip of tongue type of thing. You could tell that was part of their normal everyday way of speaking. For further information, this is a remote only position and it is in our IS department.
We were discussing this among ourselves today after the latest interview. Thoughts

So. The swearing is a hard no. We've been know to swear in my unit. Not at anyone. Not all the time. But, sometimes, only a well-inserted f word will do. But, it's a culturally accepted thing.
The interviews I took, I was more dressed up than the interview panel, both rounds. I wore maxi-dress type outfits.
I also wear stained t-shirts with holes in them in the yard. So, if it went that far, it would be hard no as well.

Thoughts I haven’t interviewed for a job in over 20 years, but even I wouldn’t wear a t-shirt to an interview, whether it was in person or on camera. And as much as I cuss IRL, I do know when it’s inappropriate…… like at a job interview. Good grief!

I’m an engineer, and interview candidates fairly regularly at my company. Swearing would be a hard no for me. The tshirt would get an internal side-eye from me, but if everything else about the interview went well, I would probably do a second interview with someone else on team for another opinion.

You all will laugh at this. Back in the day when I was a secretary at the IRS, I took notes during interviews. Of course all of the interviewers were white men as were all of the interviewers. Smoking was allowed at work. I then was tasked with typing up a summary dictated by the panel of 3. If the interviewee smoked without asking permission, that was not good and they got knocked down. If the interviewee asked so smoke and then smoked, the interviewee got knocked down for smoking during an interview. I was all of 18 or 19 and couldn't figure out what exactly the interviewee was supposed to do about the smoking. There was no such thing as no smoking back then, but if the panel all thought the interviewees shouldn't smoke, why did they say it was okay to smoke?

I have always at least put on a sweater for a first round interview, and I had a lot of remote interviews over the past year as I was job hunting. Most of the time, I put on a tank top and blazer.
I would also give a big side eye to the swearing, and I'm no saint! Don't people understand they should want to make a good impression?

We were discussing this among ourselves today after the latest interview. Thoughts If the plain T-shirt was dressed up with jewelry or a jacket, I'd be OK with it. Otherwise, it's a no for me. Swearing during an interview is a hard no! We all have those moments, but I always tried to keep my language clean at work. Except for when I worked in a hospital. Sometimes shite is just shite and there's no other way to say it. I didn't get carried away with the expletives, though. That's a real lack of professionalism in my book.

I wish I could use some of you as personal references. Since the pandemic I really haven't hung out with anyone except here and calling only a couple people. Was a stretch trying to figure out who to use as a personal reference. Missed the email on Wednesday, and no one is answering their phones except for two people.
Could use good thoughts and prayers for this. I like to give people a heads up for references. Had to resort to VM and email for my professional ones, however, I've talked to them in the recent past, so I'm not as concerned about those. Makes me sad to realize how few people I have in my non work life that I know well.
Sharon that is really weird about the t-shirts. Is the interview panel interested in any of the t-shirt wearing folks?

We did a second interview today with one of the T-shirt wearers. We all agreed he interviewed much better today. Today he wore a button up shirt and there was no swearing. The first interview wasn't bad with the swearing but there were a couple slip ups. A person we interviewed last week was as my co-worker phrased it very coarse.
It has been interesting the reactions to the people. The panel consists of two managers and three team members. One manager is one manager and the other manager is with a department that we work hand in hand with. The person who swore the most, all three team members said no way they don't want to work with them. The other manager recommended calling them back for a second because of the questions that were asked by them at the end. Also based on the fact that they made a point to call us by names etc. Our manager went with, if three of my team members don't want to work with them so they won't get a second interview. We will be doing a second with the other T-shirt wearer. The manager didn't like some of the attitudes but the rest of us were okay with it.

So, Monday was my first day making the big bucks and yesterday I noticed something screwy in my time clock tracking. My core hours have changed from 7:30-4:00 with a 30 minute lunch to 8:00-5:00 with a one hour lunch!
Uh. No. This was never conveyed to me in any way, shape or form and having to be here an extra 2.5 hours a week negates 2/3 of the raise. I am not working until 5, that just doesn't work with the school schedule (Carrot waits for me for 2 hours as it is), and an hour lunch? WTH am I supposed to do with that? I normally take 20-25 minutes.

We were discussing this among ourselves today after the latest interview. Thoughts That is interesting. My DD told me the other day that she has sworn around co-workers. She also told me yesterday that her boss can be very stoic and keep things from her co-workers but he can not hide stuff from her, she always catches him out. DH and I rarely swear, so IDK where she gets it from. Sometimes people who have a brash manner can get people to say say/reveal stuff that they would not otherwise disclose. I used to have a co-worker that swore and had a very brash manner. When the ship started to sink we used to have her talk to people sometimes b/c her manner would get them to disclose stuff that they would not otherwise say. I haven't been on this thread in quite awhile. Congrats MPL on the Promotion/Raise!

MPL Can you talk to someone and see if your hours can be adjusted? Nobody ever told me I was going to have to change my hours and it wasn't communicated in the written offer either. I'm completely ignoring it unless and until it's brought up. My cohort is scheduled to work from 7-3:30 and has been working from 6-2 with no lunch since before covid and nobody has said boo.
I just think it's really bizarre they changed them. Those are the standard salary hours here, but I'm not salary.

You might want to talk to someone. In my old job, the clock might not allow you to clock in if your hours were different than usual and at the very least you will probably show up on a variance report for your manager.

Our clocks don't care. I punch in at my computer (or my phone) and can see immediately that it took. I don't think I've ever worked my exact scheduled hours and come in on weekends a lot too.
I went and talked to a friend in HR rather than my boss, she said they must have just taken what was on the req for the position and transferred it over to the system when I got the job and to ignore it...which was my plan all along. She's been in HR for 35 years, and assured me I'm fine.
