Congrats Flutterby!
I was a candidate for a job with a competitor. I had an inside track, and so there was a fairly good chance I would have gotten the job (I think it would have been 50/50), and it would be have been better benefits and far more flexibility. Of course because of COVID they've delayed the entire hiring process, and it won't surprise me if the search gets canceled. It's frustrating to be so close, but I'd rather they cancel the search than hire and then lay me or anyone else off in six months.
My industry is about to be hit very hard, and so I don't think there will be many jobs available. I don't know how many organizations of our type are going to survive.

Thanks all! I feel like a huge weight has been lifted after putting in my notice. She offered me more money to stay, which I considered for about half a second. Nope. I don't want to hate my job anymore. I don't want to dread going to work. And all the negatives about my current job are because of her. She's just an absolutely awful boss.
I'm surprised they went through with the hiring process with everything going on. I think they think (as do I) that there will be a hiring freeze coming, and if they didn't get the position filled now, it would be a long time before they could. Works for me!

I was furloughed then laid off at the beginning of all this. My industry is devastated and won't come back, they say, for years. I scored an interview and its today! I'm so excited, I'm tired of not working. ADHD in an engineer is a bad thing......

Fingers crossed for you that it turns out to be something that you want, that you have a good feeling about the place, the job, the people, and that they feel the same way about you. I'm tired of not working, too. I've been "really" retired for five years this time, it's mostly boring, and I'm way too old to even think about working again. Not that there's anybody out there who'd consider hiring someone of my advanced years.

I've got a question for the folks here.
Background, I was hired a year ago as a part-time employee, and get mostly non -existant benefits for working a level of hours between 20-25 hours per week. I expressed a willingness to work more on occasion, to cover for vacations, for example. It quickly became apparent that I was needed for more hours. When I heard I could work up to 26, I did most weeks to help out more. Plus, I worked up to 40 some weeks during vacations.
The end of November, I was asked to work additional hours to help out in another area of my department. I asked if I was going to be getting benefits. The answer was no, because it was only a month or two to get things caught up. I agreed to 30-32 hours a week. After a couple months, I emailed my boss asking if the extra hours were continuing, and got no answer. I started to cut back my hours to what I was originally hired to do. For some reason, my boss thought I was working 40. Mind you, she approves my timecards every 2 weeks.
My original job has moved to a different department/brand new manager. I'm still officially with the old department/manager. They are supposed to hire someone full time to replace my old job, while I move on to the fill in job in my current department. This was supposed to happen in February originally.
I'm now working exclusively on old job tasks for a couple months now. The way they split the workload, I can't even get things done that I must get done to meet deadlines in a 30 hour workweek. Before the work from home, expectations of me we're limited by my butt in seat time. That limit has flown out the window, and I'm getting closer to 40 hours in. It's not my preference, but I can do it---I just want the corresponding benefits, DAMMIT!
So, do I hold tight, or do I address this yet again?

Address it now. Before it goes on any longer and becomes status quo.

It's 3 blocks from where I work now, so I don't get a break on the commute unfortunately. That's one of the drawbacks about working for the state - almost all the offices are downtown within an 8 block radius of each other.
I start May 11. I feel bad I was only able to give 13 days' notice instead of the full 2 weeks, but meh. Congratulations!!!!

flutterby - Congratulations on the new job! I hear you on the budget cuts. We're being asked to model a permanent 10% cut to our funding next year. It means that I have one unit that will go down to 3 staff from 4 because of a retirement. We are promoting one of the existing staff to the role that is being retired, but we're not going to be able to then hire for the old staff role. But I am glad I knew this before I posted the job.
stillmovingforward - Fingers crossed for you!
Lizard Queen - You need to address this again now. Send an email to both supervisors. You need to say - these are the hours I am supposed to work, and this is my exact schedule. I will not be available outside of that schedule. Here are the duties I can get done in that time. IF you want to increase my position to full-time with corresponding benefits, then I can be available for a normal 40 hour work week and accomplish these other duties as well. Please give me your answer in writing. Until I get that answer, I will be working the part-time hours.

Instead of writing a carefully worded email to my 2 supervisors in 2 different departments, I brought it up in my departments WebEx this morning (with my supervisor and my department director). They were very receptive, and planning a follow-up meeting with just the 3 of us.

Ok, for the follow up. Had that smaller meeting today. They chose wanting to keep me under 30 hours to keep my part-time status. I could have chosen pursuing the same job as it was always slated to move to full-time, but I want nothing to do with that. The work is sooo tedious, and definitely not what I went back to college for. I'm fine with PT as long as it is in fact PT. They have lots of incentive now, as they realized my trailing 6 month average is 29.5. they want to get me back to 25 to have some wiggle room. I'm okay with that, but worry I'm still going y get too much work thrown at me to be able to meet deadlines within that 25-30 hours. I'm supposed to email my boss my hours worked everyday starting Monday.

After four whole days at my new job, I'm feeling pretty dang good about my decision to take this position.
New supervisor is super nice, super chill, and thinks I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread lol.
He told me on day three that he's training me to take over his position. I have no idea if that's in a month or a year or five years or what, but still, that's good for my future career options.
HR told us we should plan on working from home for at least the next six months, and even after that, they don't want more than 35% of employees in the office at one time EVER AGAIN. Love love love the thought of very rarely having to deal with my crappy commute!
What a change from my last position, and totally worth the $18/month pay cut

OMG! They called me back for another interview on that job! I have a video interview today with 5 people. I think this is the last one before they chose. I really need this job (nearly the same money as before, medical, something to do.......)! I really only have about a third of the job skills they want but I learn fast under fire so I think I'd be fine.

Both my wife and I are on the job market - we are both still employed.
Her job was not ideal from the get go but she was hoping that would improve with time; 2 years later it has not. She has started looking and applying, fingers crossed.
As for me contract is up in 1 month as of today (June 20) and I really want out of retail. I do, do and do! I am not sure exactly where that will lead but we will see. Also taking some classes in the fall and considering grad school.
I am 35... time to make some moves!

I think my interview went well. It was very informal and had sound quality issues. But a discussion of the relevant skills they want are really in line with mine. The commute will be 1.5 hours one way but I can deal with that. I so hope I get this!

Best of luck Hatian!
DH and I are both job hunting too. His current job is tentatively guaranteed through August. He recieved a voluntary severance offer this week. If he leaves now he'll get 13 weeks at 130% of his pay. If he waits it out he will get 10 weeks at standard pay. He has two weeks to decide. I think he should take the offer now, since the payout is 69% more, and he can focus on job hunting. He is more hesitant with the current unemployment situation.
I'm almost halfway through my medical coding course and still employed in travel for now. My boss is still adamant that she wants to keep me, but if small business loans don't go through I think I'll probably be unemployed in two months.
Maybe that's why I'm anxious for DH to line up something new right away. Its a lot of uncertainty with us both potentially being unemployed at the same time.
